New member of the family

We have a new member of the family here at WoaB. Blue Bike has come to join our happy (?) troupe. I’ll post a picture of him (and yes, Blue Bike is a “him” not a “her”), as soon as I can. Blue is a 2008 RANS Fusion, a later model than Gigi and with two major differences: Blue has both wheels in the 559mm MTB size, and a frame made from straight aluminum tubes instead of Gigi’s 406/559 combination and sexy curved steel. I have already installed some nice sturdy chromed fenders on Blue, and as soon as I can Blue will have cargo capacity. At the moment I’m looking towards using a pair of kitty litter buckets with a hinged lid hanging off the factory rack, but I might remove that and go with a rack that welds to the steel fender. One thing I made sure of is that the winter studded tires I was making for Gigi will fit Blue without removing the fenders and they just clear.

So, everybody welcome Blue.

What’s up with the featherweight Feeds?

I got another Feed that was missing 2 search strings, and next to nothing in the reports for the strings I did get. Strange, I wonder if Google Alerts is being blocked from searching some sites?

Up first is a classic left cross, with a ticket. Cyclist Injured in Crash Naturally this was in Madison WI, one of the bike-friendliest cities in the US. Not a whole lot to say about this, the driver turned left into the cyclist, and a citation was issued. To avoid follow standard intersection collision avoidance protocols. You might also want to find someplace you can practice the “quick turn” to change direction rapidly so that the angle of incidence is reduced in the wreck. Getting sideswiped hurts a lot less than head-on.

Infrastructure! Bike lane backlash: Cyclists speak out against board votes Some people just don’t like bicycles…

And that’s it for today.

No cars involved in today’s Feed

There were no cars involved with any incidents in today’s Feed, including the ones that didn’t have any bicycles in them. If it wasn’t for the fact that these reports are from different news organizations I would swear that my search engine had tapped into Weekly World News instead of, you know, real news.

Up first because it’s the only North American wreck story I have for you is a wildlife/bicycle conflict in Canuckistan. Cyclist injured in collision with deer and Cyclist injured after collision with deer I love this quote from the second article: “The condition of the deer is unknown.” How to avoid, the only sure method is to not be there, but if you are there and the wildlife decides to play in the road for a bit because you don’t make enough noise to scare them off, honk a horn if you have one, ring your bell, or if you can yell loudly. In this situation the rider was able to dodge one deer but that put him on a collision course for the second, partially because wildlife does things we don’t expect and partially because he was riding too fast.

In a bizarre story, a bank robber uses the characteristics of a bicycle to elude police, including a chameleon bike helmet. Cyclist holds up Westside bank, eludes police Did you see what I was referring to in the article? “The robber, who had a black bike helmet and a black messenger bag…” next to a picture that plainly shows a bright yellow helmet on the suspect. I think the suspect’s real name is Lamont Cranston (and good luck finding that media reference :P )

And that’s it, none of the news gave me fits.

Another weird Feed

After a pleasant weekend for yr fthfl srvnt blogger, I had to filter some really bad stuff in the Feed. Fortunately for you most of the really bad stuff had nothing to do with bicycles, it was about “other things” that don’t concern us here at WoaB.

Up first is another in what appears to be an epidemic of cyclists getting hit by more than one car in a wreck, this time in ID. Cyclist seriously injured after crash involving two vehicles Once again we see an attempt to use the “I didn’t see him” excuse for vehicular mayhem, this time the old “The sun was in my eyes!” canard.

From the UK a most unusual form of distracted driving. Derbyshire woman killed cyclist as she tried to remove spider from car Being arachnophobic myself I can understand the reaction to finding a spider in your face especially an unexpected spider. But when you’re in control of the deadliest thing most humans will encounter in their lifetimes, arachnophobia is a poor excuse for killing someone that was nowhere near the spider.

Infrastructure of a different kind in this article. COMMUNITY COMMENT: Riders must take responsibility for bicycle safety This one was talking about the sorry lack of instruction for how to ride a bicycle in the street, and how much mis-information is still promulgated by well-meaning but clueless individuals.

And that’s all the news that gives me fits.

I like these light Feeds

Yes, I really like these light Feeds. Easy to filter, easy on what’s left of my mind, and easy to place in a coherent format for your reading. It’s a win-win-win situation.

Up first because something has to be is another report on the kid riding from PA to CA to raise money for breast cancer (Save the Ta-Tas!) . Cyclist raising money for cancer is killed From witness reports this may have been a deliberate act of aggression, but we won’t know for sure until the Bureau of Indian Affairs completes its investigation. Again just going from unconfirmed reports this was a hit-from-behind wreck, so use the appropriate parts of the protocol from the page linked at the top of my blog.

Infrastructure! Cyclist’s Death Spurs Push for Alabama Road Safety This was the TN wreck I reported on here a while back where the truck driver couldn’t see the cyclist in the shadows of the trees and hit her hard enough to send her body 166 feet from the point of impact. I’m not sure if any infrastructure changes can be made that will make drivers control their speeds by how far they can see and stop before hitting something, but making roads that are not just for cars but are designed for everybody to use will make a difference in the long run.

An example of poorly planned bicycle infrastructure has poor lighting and attracts predators after dark. After dark, Beach bike path becomes crime corridor Yes, a few more lights, a little police presence, and more people using the path after dark would pretty much “fix” the problem. Isolated, poorly lit, and unpoliced areas are like happy hunting grounds for human trash that preys on other people…

And that’s all the news that gives me fits.

My second page of the Gigi story

I’m still waiting for the second installment from the writing group, so I’m taking this in a direction I want to go with it. Since Gigi was stolen I haven’t felt much like writing fiction, but this will let her live on in other people’s hearts. If you want to start at the beginning click here

While the Big Dumb Guy was fixing me up (who I didn’t know at the time was really a Fire Witch) far far away someone was working to make my life miserable. Well not me personally, this was a long time before we actually met face-to-face, before I was even made, but he was working to make riding a bicycle a miserable experience, and by extension miserable for the bicycles that could be miserable, like me.

His name was Sheik Raht el Ennrahl, and he has a lot of oil. I mean a LOOOOHHHHTTT of oil, under a very small kingdom, which makes him Very Rich, but only as long as people buy his oil. So he uses the money from his oil to make people do things that make other people buy (more of) his oil. He could have invested his money in researching things that can be made from oil, but he didn’t. Instead he spent his money on a machine that made car gas from his oil. So if he wanted to make money from his oil people would have to drive cars and use lots of gas. Riding bicycles doesn’t use any gas, so Sheik Raht hated bicycles.

“Look at all those millions of people riding bicycles!” he shouted at his council of minions. “Not one of them is using a drop of my gas. This cannot go on, how can I get them to stop riding bicycles and start driving big cars that use lots of my gas?”

One of the minions shyly raised his hand. “Sheik?” he quivered. “I have an idea, but it will take a long time.”

“Well, the oil isn’t going anywhere by itself, we have time,” answered Sheik Raht.”What is your idea?”

“Make people riding bicycles look silly,” answered the minion, who came from the tiny town of Yobuhti at the farthest edge of Sheik Raht’s kingdom, about a half-hour’s bicycle ride from the Sheik’s palace. “We build lots of small bicycles for children, that aren’t very good for riding to school or for adults to ride to work, and we tell children that riding these bikes is cool. All the cool kids start riding bicycles that aren’t very good for riding and carrying stuff, that all you can do with them is just ride short distances and look “cool” while riding. Then we start saying that because kids ride bicycles but don’t actually do anything riding them that bicycles are just toys for children, and that people riding bicycles are just children that never out grew their toys.”

“But what about all those adult bikes that people are already using to get places and do things?” asked Sheik Raht, “Those thing last almost forever, and are very useful. And like I said, there are millions of people riding them.”

“It doesn’t matter, people have short memories, and if we tell them long enough that riding a bicycle is for children, then the children will believe it and grow up to be adults that believe it, and drive cars that use lots of your gas and make you rich. Well, richer, you’re already rich.” said the minion. “I even know the perfect place to start with your plan, a country called the United States. They already use most of the gas you make, but they have so much space to drive their cars in they could always use more gas.”

So they started on their plan, by building lots and lots of small bicycles for children. As hard as they tried though they couldn’t really make the bicycles bad, because if it works a bicycle is still a pretty wonderful thing. And I don’t say that just because I am a bicycle, lots of human beings say that also. But because these were such small bicycles and because there was no way to carry stuff on them, or to ride them in the rain because there were no mudguards or fenders put on them, or ride them very far because they didn’t have the right gears, when people grew up they quit riding them, mostly. There were still a few people that bought bicycles that were big enough for adults to ride and that had fenders and racks and baskets to ride in the rain and carry things, but not as many as had before, and more people drove cars to get places in the rain and carry things and they had been taught that children rode bicycles and they believed it because when they were children they had ridden bicycles and liked it, so it must be just for kids. They didn’t realize that they were being tricked, that riding bicycles was fun because it just is, not because it’s for children.

Then the Sheik and his minions made larger bicycles that were just like the children’s bicycles, with no fenders or racks or baskets to carry things, and also made them very poorly so that they would fall apart soon after they were taken from the store, and they told the people “See? See how quickly this bicycle falls apart? It’s only a toy, you can’t use it for doing adult things.” And other people also said the same thing, because these were really yucky bicycles. I don’t know how they did it, but these bicycles were actually not fun to ride even when they were new. My human calls these things “BSO” or Bicycle Shaped Objects. They look like bicycles, and they can be ridden like a bicycle if you’re very careful, but they aren’t actually bicycles. If you’re smart like a Fire Witch then you can take a BSO and work majicks into it and make it into a real bicycle, but it takes a long time to learn how to do that. My Fire Witch says it took him about 20 years to learn how, but it’s a moving target because the BSO are less and less like bicycles and more and more like junk before they even leave the store, so that there is less and less that you can use from a BSO to make a real bicycle out of it.

So, by the time I was made Sheik Raht el Ennrahl and his minions had been making and selling BSO for almost 20 years, and real bicycles were very hard to find in the United States where I was. You had to be careful of where you stepped to keep from tripping on all the messed-up and worn-out BSO that people would just leave where they stopped working, but real bicycles were hard to find. And because the Sheik’s BSO were almost the only kind of “bicycle” that most people knew they didn’t think “transportation” when they saw one, they thought “toy”. And because all they had to use for carrying stuff was cars they thought cars were the only thing you could use to carry stuff and get around. And you know how people get about playing with toys in the street, they get upset. Then they started calling people that had real bicycles names and yelling at them and trying to hurt them, because they thought the people were playing in the street instead of using a bicycle to get where they needed to go with the stuff they needed to carry. That’s the way things were when I “woke up” and discovered I was Gigi.

Early for a change, a light Feed

Yep it doesn’t take long to filter the Feed when you open that folder to only one search report, that had only 2 links.

Up first because I’m feeling generous, is a report on a left cross, to a Kawasaki rider. CRIME BEAT: Cyclist injured in boulevard crash Now before you start squawking about motorcycles and bicycles being different, yadda yadda yadda, let me point out how this is just like a bicycle wreck. The driver of the crossing vehicle was drunk, the motorcyclist was riding at a relatively low speed, for a motorcycle but within the bicycle speed range, and how many left cross wrecks have I posted about in my blog? Hundreds, maybe? Aside from the motor on the bike, this was just like 90% of them. The same rules apply for this wreck as for all the bicycle wrecks I report on and advise about. See the link at the top of my blog for avoiding wrecks at intersections.

“Football” (soccer) fans are bad, English football fans are the worst. What does that have to do with bicycles? Cyclist is injured after football fans ram bike Did I mention that drunken English football fans are the worst of the worst? I’m not exactly certain of the vehicle they used to ram the cyclist off his bike, wreck the bike and injure the cyclist, but with 2 people on board even if it was another bicycle the mass and speed were prodigious. I’m not sure what you can do about something like this, except be Kreskin (I just love using 40 and 50 year old media references).

And that’s all I have today. I’m sure I’ll have a buttload of links that came in later today in tomorrow’s post.

Out working for the Common Good, and the Feed

I was at the NCTCOG BPAC meeting this morning, and I just now recovered enough to filter the Feed and make a blog post. The meeting wasn’t so rough, but on the way back I ran out of water and calories and had a severe bonk, and I still had to go bring home groceries from the store and other things to do. I had some tea and a piece of chocolate cake, so the calories and hydration are taken care of for the moment. Now to make the post.

Up first because I hate hit-and-run, a victim that sounds like one from an Onion story gets killed by a right hook driver. Pickup driver sought in crash that killed cyclist Apparently single motor vehicles are not deadly enough anymore, this is the third double hit wreck I have seen recently. Hit-and-run wreck vehicles should be crushed, if the wreck is fatal they should be crushed with the driver handcuffed to the steering wheel.

A NJ cyclist is killed by a suspected distracted driver. North Plainfield bicyclist is killed in crash Not much about the wreck other than the ages of the participants and the location. Distracted driving is suspected because of the age of the driver, but at this point everything is supposition. I can’t even tell you if the wreck involved an intersection or was in the middle of the block.

The drivers that were suspected of racing in the death of a pro cyclist on a training ride are arraigned. Suspects in bicyclist’s death plead not guilty Patrick Roraff and Brett Morin, both 18, are charged with vehicular manslaughter in the April 8 wreck that led to the death of Jorge Alvarado Race on a race track when you race cars, back when I was in the SCCA we would spend days looking for safe venues to hold races away from permanent race tracks. Sanctioned racing events are just as much fun, and much safer than street racing.

Some good news from the Bay Area, about one of the victims of the lunatic with a SUV. Fundraiser this weekend for cyclist injured in SUV rampage This was the most seriously injured of the 4 cyclists, probably the one that the driver crossed the street to hit head-on. The fundraiser will be held on Sunday, June 27, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Old Clamhouse, 299 Bayshore Blvd, near Oakdale Avenue. $20 gets you a plate of food, one free drink, and two raffle tickets. There will also be live music and a DJ. Gigi would approve of you going to this event. She would approve even more of you dropping a few extra bucks in the till when you get there.

Here’s a strange story, an Australian newspaper reports on the death of a University of Colorado student on a charity ride. Student John Anczarski hit by car during cancer charity ride No charges have been filed but give them time.

From Jolly Olde, another driver gets away with killing a cyclist. Driver who killed cyclist walks free from court Kill a cyclist and even though it was hit-and-run you canget away with it by returning to the scene and telling the court you’re “really, really sorry”. Probation, not even a fine or a banning from driving. TANJ! He looks like he’s “really, really sorry” doesn’t he?

And that’s all the news that gives me fits.

I WANT THIS APRON!!!

I want, I want, I must have:

Baking is Science for Hungry People APRON

OMG have you ever seen anything so awesome in your life?

Link light, but heavyweight content, the Feed

Only 2 links in the Feed today, but they were heavyweights.

Up first, because it’s (almost) good news, a hit-and-run driver turns himself in after being identified. Hit & Run Suspect Turns Himself In How nice that the police didn’t have to break your door down to find you, now that you have sobered up and destroyed the evidence of your drunkenness when you were driving. I hope they “forget” where you are.

An experienced and skilled rider is hit from behind and killed in WI. Cyclist killed in Town of Summit accident I hate that word, “accident”. It implies that there is no fault, nothing that could be done, no agency that could have prevented this killing, when in reality had the unnamed 20 YO driver paid attention to what was in the road in front of the vehicle, slowed down, and passed when safe, then nothing would have happened except perhaps a few seconds’ delay in the driver’s trip. Instead we have one life ended and another ruined. And that’s an “accident”…

And that’s all the news that gives me fits.
