This post will definitely go up late, and the Feed

Howdy folks! As we approach the Autumnal Equinox things get a little busy around Casa de El Poeta aka WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. For one thing there are all the rituals celebrating the holiday that I have to attend because I have friends and circle-mates who follow different traditions and all want me to be a part of their celebrations. For another thing there is the minor fact that I was born on this particular Pagan holiday. That means More Parties to attend. Add the third thing that I have become involved with electoral politics (without the swords and machine guns in this reality) and things are ramping up now, and well I’m just pulled in so many directions I almost look like a cartoon character. And I forgot I will be going to Dallas Pride Day to sign people up to support marriage equality this Sunday morning, well forgot until just now.

Speaking of birthdays, I have been asked to post what I want for mine. Simple enough, I need a steering wheel controller for my PS2 that will work with GT4, meaning (probably) something from Logitech. I can use Amazon gift certificates to buy one or someone could just send one to the church and I will take it home from there. This is the second cyclist hit from behind in the bike lane since the 3-feet-to-pass law went into effect in CA. Freeport Boulevard closed after fatal bike crash The law requires a $220 ticket that with fees and costs comes to $980 for hitting a cyclist from behind, something I have yet to see with either of the wrecks since the law went into effect.

Still in CA a driver is sentenced in a wreck with a cyclist. Point Reyes Station man sentenced in DUI hit-and-run that injured cyclists I seriously doubt he would have gotten much of anything in the way of jail had he not taken down the telephone pole. Still 9 months is way more than he would have gotten had this wreck been in NY state.

As much as I like the streamlined look of the new composing page there is just too much missing from it for me to continue to use it. Automatic if you guys are paying attention we need to make getting to the classic composing page as easy as getting to the stripped-down new page. I don’t mind the missing tools as much as I mind that the new page strips out components of the site when I use it, or at least strips out components of the site when I access the site since I don’t know what other people’s experience is like. When I use the classic compose I get access to the share button so that I can send this to all the FB pages I have admin status for (not something I do every day, but something I do sometimes to specific pages that the post would be welcome at), but when I use the new page the share button is gone. This is not acceptable.

Also I spent an exciting hour watching Jens Voigt ride a bicycle in circles. #Shutuplegs indeed.

Up first, while I love being able to look at a crime scene picture and establish a narrative of the events leading up to that crime scene picture, I hate being right in this case. Or install physical infrastructure that’s “up to Dutch”.

A wreck in NV. Or in other words did the cyclist enter an intersection with the green light and just not have enough time to clear it before cross traffic started moving, but with the pictures of the weapon vehicle and the bike I think that’s not the case with this wreck. The bike is so badly mangled that determining of the bike had working brakes at the time of the wreck is pretty much impossible unless the brake cables have heavy corrosion indicating they had been disconnected for some time. So I’m going to have to go with NLV LEO on this wreck because there is no doubt the cyclist ran the red into traffic. Why he ran the red is another question entirely, not in my pay grade.

Things have been a bit busy this week, and this is only Monday. Among things I can talk about I have a consultation with a surgeon this Thursday for removing the thing on the back of my neck that is making drinking soda from the can a painful and difficult proposition lately, and I had a discussion of volunteering for the Wendy Davis campaign this afternoon as well as a trip to the bank to pay for the new hat I’m giving myself for my birthday. The new hat is being custom-made by an Etsy vendor called “Steezy Workz” and hopefully will be ready by year’s end. And my spell checker thought “Steezy” was spelled right but not the “Workz” part of the name? WTF?!? Anywho, I’m having to order the hat over the Internet because there are no local vendors still making the hat I want. Also I am up to my eyeballs in the NDA project that is burning up tons of time as well. For a guy who doesn’t have a steady job I sure seem to have a lot to do…

Up first, despite all the predictions of mass carnage when bike share went into effect just about everywhere in North America it has been tried, those predictions have all come up negative. Why? But as it stands now it’s all guesswork.

Ramen on Bean Day, and the Feed

I have someplace to go this evening (as I’m writing this) and I will probably have to finish the post after I get back from my gig. I’m going to do data entry for a political phone bank this evening, since I’m crap as an operator since the wreck. I have zero improv skills since the wreck and I knew my public speaking skills were gone the first spoken word gig I had after the wreck. I was speaking like I had never been on stage in my life and had never had any training in how to use my voice. I had some slight improvement for a few years then things have been steadily deteriorating ever since. So I take my laptop and transcribe phone sheets into a database. This saves the callers considerable time and also allows people without laptops to call as quickly as they are able.

The ramen bit is I needed something that could be whipped up in a few minutes for Mrs. the Poet before I left and also be done when I needed to go, so I’m using ramen in the traditional Japanese way rather than the American way of “noodles in pot and 3 minutes later in stomach”. I’m adding leftover veggies and a couple of whipped eggs to the noodles to make the pack of ramen into a meal for two. It’s quick, it’s easy and it uses up leftovers. That makes it perfect for tonight.

It looks like a hit-and-run in South Texas is today’s leadoff story. Driver kills cyclist then flees the scene in Harlingen Scene pictures show this as a hit-from-behind on the right side of the bike lane (making assumptions from what appears to be a puddle of blood next to the curb) which means the driver of the weapon vehicle left his lane and went almost to the curb to hit a brightly lighted cyclist. This means the cyclist was riding extra legal as in as legal as possible and also means that protocols are moot for this case, the driver would have just killed the cyclist further from the road had he bailed any further to the side than he already was. Dutch infrastructure standards would be to put the person that approved this design in jail because of the inevitability of exactly this occurrence. This was a highway with speed limits much too high for a simple bike lane to be safe. Without a barrier this wreck was inevitable, the infrastructure here is simple appeasement. Ask Neville Chamberlain how well appeasement works. Dutch quality infrastructure to prevent.

This is another one of “those wrecks” that human cyclists can’t evade because they are already at the limits of their escape route, and only a barrier or massive amounts of distance will prevent a similar wreck, or developing technology that causes a car to come to a complete stop if a cell phone is used in the car. Something that makes the phone catch fire if the car is in motion and the phone is in use? That might be a little safer than stopping the car while trying to call police because someone is trying to carjack you, then you can throw the flaming phone at the carjacker.

“Final” word on a CA wreck. No charges filed from Irvine cyclist killed in Newport Beach If the narrative is correct this wreck appears to be a cyclist that left-crossed himself, which is tragic but not the fault of the driver.

This speaks of pre-meditation to me, or just general Dumbassery. Neither scenario leaves cyclists with much if any options to avoid the wreck considering they were already off the road on the shoulder so that leaves Dutch quality segregated infrastructure and presumed liability legal infrastructure to protect cyclists from drivers like this.

Tragedy in the Great White North as a rider on a charity ride gets hit. Ride the Rideau cyclist hit, killed by truck and Mother of two killed in Ride the Rideau cycling event Nothing about the mode, just the cyclist was hit by/with a dump or garbage truck while on the course raising money to fight cancer. I assume they do charity rides in the Netherlands, too, so get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Boy are my legs bad, and the Feed

I went for a ride last night after putting the blog to bed, and my legs are terrible. I mean seriously I can NOT believe these are the same appendages that carried me 200 km round trip to have lunch with my GF as recently as 2007. I know I have been spending more time in the garage building and at the computer posting blogs than riding a bike, especially since Blue was stolen August of last year, but STILL! Cycling used to be an escape where my body carried me away from mundane cares and concerns, not provided me with additional cares and concerns… I really need to ride more. I will start that with riding to the RPG get-together this Saturday. I know that’s a trace over 12 miles round trip, but I need the miles and the challenge. I seriously think the challenge is more important than the miles at this point.

Up first is what appears to be a police murder of a cyclist in Quebec. Cyclist run over by police car fighting for life and Guy Blouin ID’d as cyclist run over by Quebec City police car also this Quebec City Police Under Investigation After Cruiser Runs Over Cyclist This one started out bad and just got worse and worse as the day went on and more links came in. Here’s what we know at this moment: The cyclist was riding salmon on a one way street when he passed the LEO, LEO throws the car into reverse and begins pursuit backwards going the wrong way on a one way street and according to one witness appeared to deliberately knock the cyclist from the bike. The cyclist ended up under the rear tires of the car, but instead of waiting for trained responders to extract the cyclist from under the car without doing any further damage the cop that hit him drives the car back over the cyclist, further injuring him (remember one witness testifies the initial impact appeared to be deliberate, we know the second was). Then the cyclist was handcuffed and forced to sit down on the sidewalk before being walked over and put in the back of an ambulance (apparently the EMT did not know the victim had been run over twice before they got to the scene). The victim died shortly after arriving at the hospital. While the victim was being transported the initial LEO at the scene was “tidying up” and put the victim’s bicycle in his trunk and moved his car (away from the scene? not confirmed) before accident investigators could arrive and measure the scene of the now crime. This would be the Big Story even if it didn’t have lots of links. Either this is the stupidest cop in Canada, or one of the most evil cops in Canada. Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of my death, but to use another Python quote “I got better”, so hence the blog. Seriously I do this blog so that nobody else has to go through what I went and continue to go through. The small community that has sprung up around this blog is enough for me to keep going even when it’s obvious that I’m attempting to demolish a concrete wall by banging on it with my forehead. I regenerate (slowly) but any damage I can inflict on the wall remains. Like rain eventually made the Grand Canyon, if I keep persevering long enough that wall will come down. I will have a flat forehead and a terrible headache, but the wall will be no more. And I know that is a terrible metaphor for what I’m doing, but after all this time banging my head against that wall, I can’t think of anything better. Besides, do you know what kind of abs banging your head against a wall gives you? ;) Titanium Nitride abs (abs of steel is so 20th Century). Now we have a lot of links to cover, so let’s get busy.

But before “getting busy” a quick note about the U.S. holiday today. We celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in September because there was “too much Communist involvement” with the rest of the world’s celebration on May 1st. This is going to be a long night, and the Feed

I normally stay up late Friday night to get the 2400 post to the Feed folder filtered and on the blog so it isn’t so old come Monday, and so I have one fewer report to filter then. Well I just finished going through the 1800 post, and if that is any indication, tonight is going to be a very long night indeed. But first, I’m having difficulty getting the brain shaped jello mold for my Death Day party. For new readers, I celebrate the day I almost died, because I did die, but [Monty Python] I got better[/Monty Python]. I know I mention it way too much for my regular readers, but 08/31/2001 at 0119 I died. I was dead until approximately 0121 when I spontaneously “rebooted” and came back complaining that the upper end of my femur was broken. I was completely oblivious to the fact that from the knee down my left leg was a bloody gaping wound and I was bleeding to death. You see that’s the upside to being dead for about 2 minutes at the beginning of this mess, I had an extra 2 minutes where I wasn’t spurting blood everywhere instead of keeping it inside my body. I have mentioned my experiences with being dead elsewhere (archive crawl!) so I’ll spare those who don’t wish to know (spoiler, it was boring). Since I don’t have the mold tonight, I can’t do the blue jello and yogurt “brains” for the Saturday party, but I might have the time to get a batch set up in time for the Sunday party. That’s right, I get 2 parties to celebrate not being dead, one with the people in the RPG group, and another on the actual date of the wreck with the people at my church. I don’t know if there will be alcohol at either party, but I would very much like there to be a good dark beer…

Up first today is a bunch of links to a wreck that was mainly caused by incomplete infrastructure in Seattle, WA. Certain members of the City Council took it upon themselves to delay installation of signals that would give cyclists a different signal phase from traffic turning left across the bike lane, and as a result the driver of the large weapon vehicle (and because the type of vehicle is not the issue here, this is an infrastructure wreck, I’m not mentioning what kind of vehicle here) was making a left turn as the cyclist was riding straight and the cyclist hit the vehicle a glancing blow just behind the front wheels and then fell under the rear wheels. But as I said the real issue is that the signals that would have prevented this wreck were delayed a year by a single person on the Seattle City Council. From my point of view, that council member murdered this cyclist. And yes, I’m Pissed Off about it.

From just east of WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell, a cyclist hit by an SUV. Friend of cyclist hit by SUV: ‘She’s not going to quit’ This seems to be entirely the fault of the driver for just driving over the cyclist in the road in front of him as he was using his cell phone while driving. This makes using the hit-from-behind protocols iffy at best because of reaction time, leaving only getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. But as this is East Texas the best we will ever get is a stripe of paint and dirty pavement covered in debris, unless an outside agency forces otherwise. And watching the video was just so … UGH!

Moving out west to L.A. CA and something else I am none too happy about. The next judicial step is the civil trial where the legal fees and any payout assessed against the deputy will be picked up by the taxpayers of L.A. County with no chance of subrogating the money back out of the deputy. If the Olins are smart they will state up front they want the damages to be assessed against the deputy, not borne by the taxpayers, because that is the only way to protect the taxpayers. A WI cyclist is hit-and-run. Cyclist injured in hit and run crash in rural Dodge County AFAIK this was a buzz job gone bad as the cyclist’s injuries were not severe and there was no intersecting road listed in the narrative, and the description of the debris and damages inflicted on the weapon vehicle are consistent with a buzz job. Also all you Madison-area Cheeseheads keep that proverbial eyeball peeled for that weapon vehicle. As of this posting they hadn’t found it yet.

And still in SoCal, a police chief only gets it half right. From the Chief- Kids, bikes and school People in cars are driving potential murder weapons around with the destructive power of anything from a 20mm to a 155mm cannon shell. A 20mm is barely bigger than a machine gun (there are 20mm rifles, but they are heavy as hell to carry, more than a mortar tube and aiming platform but they fire an effective AP round so they used to be used against armor at medium ranges… TMI) but a 155 or the naval equivalent are capable of taking out large buildings with a single shot.
