After ruining my “vacation” I’m back at work in TX, and the Feed

That was the last time I bring my laptop with me on vacation. I mean seriously the only time I didn’t work on the blog was when I was unable to find an Internet connection, and there was so much I missed out on by being stuck inside on the computer. Also I really needed a longer break from all the “lovely” death and gore that goes with this job. I realized that when I was watching a wreck video taken from the wrecked bicycle, and other people in the room had to leave because they had to throw up and I was just watching to see how far over into the cyclist’s lane the weapon vehicle was driven. This is a level of detachment I really don’t want to sustain. It’s not good for my long-term mental health to be that detached from death, dismemberment, and destruction. It leads to things like supporting the death penalty for reals, not just as a demonstration of how serious I believe an offense should be taken.

Up first is what appears to be a left cross that is blamed on the cyclist’s failure to wear a magic foam hat just a few miles from the WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. Cyclist killed in Plano after being struck by vehicle Yeah, totally the fault of the cyclist riding through the intersection with the right of way over the turning vehicle but not wearing a helmet, not the guy driving blindly through the cyclist. Intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. And fire any LEO who places more emphasis on wearing a helmet than in making a legal left turn that does not hit cyclists.

Update on a hit-and-run in LA. Cyclist died of drowning; driver out on bond The cyclist had survivable injuries but died because he couldn’t get out of the ditch after the wreck. He would have lived and recovered had the driver just stayed at the scene and helped him out of the ditch. It’s situations like this that make me want to chain the driver to the steering wheel and run the car through a car shredder. More Coroner: Bicyclist drowned following hit-and-run

Karma runs over a drunk driver in NM. Woman tied to 2010 cyclist death gets prison time in separate case She’s still awaiting trial on charges the killed a building while driving drunk (no that is neither a joke nor a typo, she destroyed a building with her car).

From the current US champion cyclist-killing state of FL, another notch on the infrastructure… Cyclist killed in crash near Beverly Beach Camptown This report makes no sense whatsoever. I mean, sure SWCC wreck, and without seeing the wrecked bicycle I can’t say what way the bike was pointed at time of impact, but the point of impact on the weapon vehicle would have been right in front of the driver if he had been looking where he was going. So I can’t say if this was an intersection wreck, hit from behind, or if the cyclist was riding across the street at mid-block. That kind restricts my advice to installing Dutch infrastructure to prevent a similar wreck. More Another highway fatality

For when you think there might be sane drivers in FL. Road-raging Florida man run over by his own truck after drunken crash Unfortunately he survived. Recounting, drunk driver hits car stopped for red light in the rain, gets out to bang on driver’s window and rant, light changes and driver that was hit from behind leaves, then the truck with the driver’s open beer on board runs over the driver trying to catch and stop it with his hands. Driver had a BAC% of 0.22 when tested in hospital… idiot.

An OH cyclist gets a lucky break. Cyclist Hit By Passing Truck The luck breaks were manifold in this wreck, the first being the cyclist was not hit fully by the truck that buzzed him, another being the spokesman for LEO was not person who investigated the wreck because the levels of understanding of the law from the investigator vastly exceeded the understanding displayed by the spokesperson. Buzz job means hit-from-behind protocols to avoid or reduce damages, while infrastructure “up to Dutch” including education of LEO about laws and the limitations of PPE like bicycle helmets will prevent a similar wreck. Or if not prevent it, make sure everyone knows that passing motor vehicles are at fault when hitting bicycles being passed in the same direction.

An IA wreck with cyclist survivor. Cyclist in fair condition after Ireton, Iowa, crash Driver buzzed the cyclist and was ticketed for the offense. Hit from behind protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and I’m really sorry the cyclist’s RAGBRAI vacation was ruined by an idiot with a driver’s license and 2 brain cells to rub together. Oh yeah, get that infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

A really annoying wreck in NYC that LEO seem to insist is the fault of the cyclist for being there to get hit. Cyclist’s Legs Crushed By Cement Truck In East Williamsburg Right hook, cyclist survival is still unknown.[UPDATE] Comment from User ID “JB” says the cyclist is recovering in hospital. and “Broke’N’Hungry” left the comment “(T)hats a friend of mine. Didn’t read through all the comments because there are so many of them but just updating for anyone that wants to know– she’s okay!!! will be in and out of surgeries for a little but blessed be the powers that only got her leg!! 1-2 weeks hospital time with like 6 months-ish of recovery (mostly wheelchair bound, but recovery!).” Intersection protocols to avoid or reduce injury, and if this was anyplace other than NYC I would say get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent, but since this is from NYC I’m going to say ban motor vehicles without a pilot carrying a red flag walking in front and behind the vehicle is the way to go because they really can’t move the buildings to install more infrastructure, and they have the required public transit to replace any and all private motor vehicles in the city, except for trucks delivering goods which is where the pilots walking with red flags come in.

Another NYC wreck on a bike path. Bus Driver Seriously Injures Cyclist on Hudson River Greenway Right hook with the bus and the bike path both getting the green light at the same time, a move that is guaranteed to cause wrecks, deaths and destruction. As this is already a segregated bike path I place all blame on the infrastructure and the driver’s failure to yield to the cyclist who had the green light to proceed straight through the intersection. This is a direct violation of the CROW manual for building bike infrastructure in the Netherlands.

What it takes to get a murder conviction for killing someone with your motor vehicle in NY. Upstate NY driver convicted for fatally hitting bicyclist, fleeing with body wedged on truck OK seriously, just put his guy away for life without parole, he was out on drug charges when he killed the cyclist (using, not selling). Or just let me have him… I promise to put all the pieces in the same location, and in the right order. I even promise he will have a pulse and respiration and most of his blood.

A report from WI that has 2 vehicles in the intersection after a 4-way stop, so why are they assuming the guy riding the bicycle was the one that ran the stop sign? Green Lake Co. cyclist injured in crash with pickup I looked at the intersection in Google Maps, and I saw 4 way stop signs (well technically I saw shadows on the ground from where the stop signs should be). Intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and infrastructure to prevent.

Another WI wreck with a DUI driver. Cyclist injured in Sparta collision Nothing on the mode or anything that would allow deducing the mode, just a drunk driver hitting an innocent cyclist… INFRASTRUCTURE! damnit.

I think this MI wreck is a prime example of the difference between getting infrastructure “up to Dutch” and just throwing pavement down and calling it “bicycle infrastructure”. Bicyclist slams into truck on crosswalk Looking at the intersection with Street View you can see traffic on the bike path did not have priority over motor vehicles in the street, 180 out from the Dutch standard. The intersection seemed to have good visibility and the driver stating he “always” slowed down coming to that spot may have sucked the cyclist into believing the driver was going to stop and let him proceed. Intersection protocols to avoid or to mitigate damages, and turn those stop signs to face the street like “real” bicycle infrastructure to prevent. I mean they are more than 2/3 of the way there, why not make the simple change to get all the way there?

A cyclist is hit from behind in IL. Van hits 17-year-old cyclist on 45/52 Since the weapon vehicle was leaving the road as it hit the cyclist this negates any chance to employ the protocols to avoid the wreck or reduce the damages from it.

Some days I really feel for Ted, like today. Update: Bicyclist killed in Menifee collision; Riverside County bike fatalities twice as high as last year Hit from behind presumably in the bike lane, but the description of the weapon vehicle sounds like one of the micro cars from the Lane Museum. or one of these? protocols would not be useful if the description of the scene is accurate, so getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” is all that can be done to prevent a similar wreck.

Another CA wreck is a hit-from-behind. One teen killed, another injured in Modesto auto vs. cyclist collision Since it seems there were two up on a single bike and it wasn’t a cargo or tandem bike and at least one was drunk… There are things that have a high chance of a bad outcome in the US that are if not “normal” are at least not uncommon and fairly safe in places where the infrastructure is not heavily biased in preference to private motor vehicles as transportation…

Another CA cyclist is hit by a train? Cyclist killed by train Seriously, don’t do this. The cyclist rode around the crossing guards to try to beat the freight train and not have to wait for the several minutes required for the crossing. Your life is not worth taking the chance to save a few minutes.

Updates on multiple wrecks in AK. Cyclist Death Investigation Underway While Friends Mourn Still aren’t saying what will happen with such egregious wrecks as getting hit from behind by a driver speeding in reverse… If any wreck called for serious prison time this one does. And for the record, I doubt any protocols or infrastructure changes would do anything for this wreck unless driver’s license standards were also tightened severely at the same time.

Yucky wreck in the Great White North. Cyclist badly injured in collision with dump truck Even when the cyclist survives a wreck with a dump truck, it ain’t pretty doesn’t even come close to describing it. From the picture it looks like the truck was swinging wide and cut the corner in a seriously bad right hook. The bike is under the front wheel, which tells me the cyclist never saw what hit him until he was under the truck. That makes employing any of the protocols impossible, leaving only infrastructure that didn’t leave cyclists running from dump trucks driven by Mr. Magoo as the only sane alternative.

At least they know not to blame the cyclist in this intersection wreck. Cyclist seriously injured after being hit by car Drier ran the red hitting the cyclist after she entered the intersection, and was caught doing so by witnesses, so it wasn’t the driver claiming legality with nobody to speak for the cyclist. Anyway, not much the cyclist could do, and unless this was rebuilt as an intersection that had flyovers for the cars with bikes riding through at grade level changing the infrastructure would not have helped either.

A fatal wreck in Canuckistan. Cyclist killed on Interlake highway Naturally they blame the cyclist for riding in the “middle” of the road instead of the driver not looking where his vehicle was going. Hit from behind protocols might have given the cyclist a chance, infrastructure would not have required him to take one.

If this doesn’t make you feel warm and fuzzy, you’re either deceased or have problems. Boy Carries His Younger Brother Through Triathlon, Wins At Life

Now this is riding with a purpose! This rogue bicycle pony express delivered mail in 1894 Cyclists rode in shifts over a set section of the route waiting at each end of the section for the rider coming their direction to hit the road with the mail for the next section.

Horrible legal Infrastructure! news from New York. NY Court Just Made It Easier For Drivers To Get Away With Murder Seriously, I want to know what these guys are smoking… They just contracted the definition of “depraved” until you have to deliberately target everything on the road until your vehicle is too battered to continue to get a murder conviction for driving like a maniac. The driver in this case was doing over 70 MPH when he hit the victim throwing her body a NYC block, and the panel of “judges” declared this was NOT “depraved indifference” to the lives of others. Decisions like this make me want to require mandatory drug testing of judges before every case and at random times during the case…

Last day in TN and we ate some more, and the Feed

We had a visit with the kids’ old baby sitters, which was nice. We went to lunch, which was filling. Mrs. the Poet and I shared a plate called a Rusty Bucket at a seafood place up the street after we got to our intended eating establishment and found them closed on Mondays. I also had what will probably be my last local beer, this one a dark beer with floral overtones and a slightly bitter finish called a Turtle Anarchy. So far I have not hit any clinkers in my local beer safari across NY and TN. Programming note, I will be off-air for travel tomorrow and Wednesday. This will mean that I will be up to my expectations in links on Thursday :D

Cyclists have highly sensitive danger senses, but this guy’s is just beyond anything I have ever encountered. Dutch cyclist cheats death twice, never boards MH17 and MH370 Somebody needs to see how this guy rides in traffic and see if there is some kind of sixth sense thing going on or something.

A few miles east of WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell is an update on that buzz job that was nearly fatal caught on video. Cyclist clipped by truck: ‘I remember riding up the overpass and I don’t remember anything after that’ I think a video camera would be a very good addition to Francis/es in the near future.

The article next closest is an update on an LA hit-and-run. Driver arrested in death of cyclist Lon Lomas The cyclist was hit from behind and left for dead earlier this year.

More on that NOLA right hook by a semi on a cyclist, that was at least partially caused by poor infrastructure design. Victim in Marigny fatal bicycle crash with 18-wheeler identified

Another blind driver runs over a cyclist in FL. Tampa police: Driver ran over bicyclist lying in road and Bicyclist dies on N 50th Street in southeast Tampa Ignoring for the moment the question of what caused the cyclist to be horizontal instead of vertical in the road, why was the driver unable to avoid an adult human male and a bicycle in the road on a bright sunny day? The point has been made in comments to the first link that there was nothing obstructing the vision of the driver to cause him to hit the body in the road. Second question is why the cyclist was in the road in the first place, was he hit by another vehicle or was there some kind of medical situation that caused him to fall? And yes, being drunk is a medical situation.

More on a really strange wreck in CA. Bicyclist Dies In Macabre Accident, Run Down By a Car on the Sidewalk I have been reading in BicyclingInLA that the victim was just waiting for a bus and not a cyclist, that the bicycle on the scene was just additional debris from the wreck, possibly locked to one of the light stanchions mowed down by the vehicle as it transited the sidewalk on its ballistic trajectory after the initial impact with the other vehicle involved. This information does not make this person any less dead or the situation any less tragic.

Another CA bike wreck. Chino Hills driver arrested after bicyclist fatally struck in Pomona Hit-from-behind protocols might have helped avoid or reduced injury, but keeping drunk drivers off the roads and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would have prevented this wreck. Getting rid of drunk drivers more than other aspects of infrastructure, but still it takes a complete package.

A NH child cyclist is injured in collision with a pickup truck. Keene boy hit on bicycle, flown to hospital From looking at the Street View of the intersection intersection protocols might have been a total waste of time because of the geometry of the impact. Getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” has a very high probability of preventing a similar wreck given the age of the victim. Seriously, this intersection is a total mess of 5 intersecting streets and no traffic controls aside from a stop sign on one street, and a flashing amber light. There are bike lanes on one of the arterial streets and copious markings about yielding to pedestrians, so they are working on it.

A cyclist is hit-and-run in MT. Bicyclist in critical condition after hit-and-run crash in Missoula Hit from behind and the LEO report made no mention of missing lights or reflectors so it can be safely assumed the cyclist was legally lighted and reflectorized. Protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Hit and run death in the 49th State. Cyclist killed in Anchorage identified; teenage driver detained and another link Cyclist killed in Anchorage identified; teenage driver detained Nothing on the mode of the wreck in either link, just that the teen driver left the scene and parked the truck a few blocks away from the wreck. So, INFRASTRUCTURE!

A right hook in the Great White North, Female cyclist receives minor injuries after being struck in Oakville Nothing on what kind of punishment was dealt to the driver in this wreck, but intersection wreck, intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages from the wreck, and infrastructure to prevent.

A deadly wreck in Canuckistan. Cyclist struck and killed north of Selkirk also Winnipeg Cyclist Killed Near Selkirk Hit from behind on a cyclist riding where he should have been highly visible to drivers actually looking at the road, no mention of anything missing from the cyclist’s equipment except the helmet which seems to get mentioned in every wreck even if the cyclist had only massive blunt force trauma to the torso and untouched head. Protocols to avoid and infrastructure to prevent.

Moving on to Jolly Olde we see the resolution of a drunk driving fatality. Woman whose sister was killed by drunk-driver is jailed for mowing down cyclist after alcohol-fuelled row with boyfriend and Four years’ jail for drunk driver who killed cyclist as she chased boyfriend’s car Four years with likely release in 2 is hardly the appropriate sentence for killing someone at nearly twice the legal posted speed and blood alcohol limits both.

And at that this driver got more than 66% of drivers convicted of killing cyclists in the UK. Cycling deaths: Fewer than half of drivers face jail

It’s raining again, and the Feed

Storm clouds seem to dog us on this trip, we left over 11″ of rain behind in NY when we left, and it rained last night and this morning here in TN. The plan is sometime today or tomorrow we are supposed to make a return trip to the Lane Museum to look at more old cars and also make a trip to one of the largest used book stores in the US.

Up first a TX cyclist demonstrates why you need two cameras when you ride a bike on a highway. Clipped Short Version and Bicyclist recovering from injuries suffered in Monday morning Bullard accident This is a major case of getting Ricked (as in Perry, the other governor that vetoed a safe passing law). Looking at the video the cyclist had less than a second from the pickup truck moving to the right to getting hit. No time to employ the protocols, leaving only improved infrastructure as the only way to prevent a wreck like this. American style infrastructure with the debris-strewn bike lanes next to high-speed traffic is proven not to be effective.

Cyclist run over, killed by large truck in Marigny I already covered this wreck yesterday, today’s link merely backs up what I said then. Bike rider killed in Canoga Park, apparently the innocent victim of a two-car collision This was a pinball wreck, nothing that a cyclist could do to avoid it, and precious little that even “up to Dutch” infrastructure could do to prevent another one. More Bicyclist Killed, 2 Injured In 2-Vehicle Crash In West Hills

I’m not sure what happened, but I think it was hit-from-behind. Bike rider seriously injured in Wentworthville The weapon vehicle went through the cyclist off the road and into a pole beside the road. This moots the protocols for avoiding this wreck, leaving only building infrastructure that is “up to Dutch” to prevent another wreck like it.

A hit-from-behind wreck caught on dashcam from a following vehicle in Russia. Video: Russian cyclist walks away after being run over by skip lorry The cyclist was hit in the left 1/3 of the lane with a large curb and pedestrian fence cutting off any chance of having an escape route to the right. Take one day off and people start looking for things for you to do, and the Feed

This post is very late getting started because I was Shanghaied into several hours worth of shopping trips and going to a softball game, and making dinner. While nothing was real bad, except maybe the softball game ;) it all took time away from the computer and doing the blog post. So later than I usually complete the post. I start with the links.

Up first some good news on a cyclist believed deliberately hit by a Dodge Nitro in GA. ‘Hello’ – Injured cyclist speaks LEO think they have the weapon vehicle, but haven’t charged a driver yet, although pending charges are attempted murder. They are still trying to determine if the victim has permanent brain damage or just the kind that eventually gets better or undetectably bad.

Over in LA a cyclist is killed in a hit-and-run, with two links. Acadiana police blotter for July 8, 2014 The wreck is the top article on the blotter. And Cyclists focus on road safety The cyclist was hit from behind on a road that everyone agrees was too narrow to safely share a lane between a cyclist and a motor vehicle. So protocols to prevent, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

An IL cyclist is hit from behind. UPDATE: Peru woman dies after van-bike crash The cyclist was riding an e-assist bike when hit from behind, and LEO are trying to use that to blame the cyclist for the wreck. TANJ! Protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent, including telling LEO that the overtaking vehicle is required by law to pass safely without hitting the passed vehicle even when the passed vehicle has a tiny electric motor temporarily supplying motive power (Federal regs declare a bicycle with 750 or fewer watts rated power that is governed to not travel faster than 20 MPH on level ground with no wind is a bicycle for legal definitions, this has been law for more than 12 years now).

A wreck in far West Canuckistan leaves the cyclist posting to social media to catch the driver of the weapon vehicle. Injured B.C. cyclist posts photo on Facebook of SUV and driver that hit him Left cross left the cyclist injured and slightly in shock but got “with it” enough to photograph the driver and the back of the weapon vehicle as he was leaving the scene.

A UK wreck caught on frightening video. Shocking moment a cyclist was catapulted through the air by a hit-and-run driver in head-on crash – but escaped without serious injury The license plate was blocked out in the video because it was determined the plate was cloned off a legally registered vehicle of the same make and color. This is the UK equivalent of a left cross and you see how quickly these wrecks develop. There was no time to use any protocols aside from “roll with the impact”. That’s not one of mine by the way, that one comes from a Hollywood stuntman from the 1930s or ’40s. And get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent a similar wreck in the future.

This is a combination wreck and infrastructure link because the wreck was caused by defective UK infrastructure. Cyclists injured after hitting ‘stealth hole’ in road Yep, that depression has claimed another victim, sharp enough to knock a cyclist off the bike and on the deck, but subtle enough that cyclists don’t see it until too late to avoid it or not at all if there is other traffic diverting attention from the road surface to such mundane matters as not running into other vehicles.

A tire-touch wreck on a group ride in Oz leaves two injured cyclists. Two cyclists injured in crash on Cope Road This is one of the constant dangers of group rides that just anyone can join, and there’s nothing that can be done about it except not go on group rides that anyone can join.

Update on a wreck in Enn Zed. Cyclist killed in Hamilton named The narrative now reads the cyclist turned in front of the bright yellow delivery van, that was going fast enough to leve a 30 foot long debris field from the point of impact to where the cyclist disengaged from the truck. Intersection protocols still apply, just that now the cyclist should have yielded to the van. And infrastructure “up to Dutch” would still prevent the wreck.

Our Daily Ted is a shade bitter today. Morning Links: Biking backlash to misguided WaPo bikelash, and a fund for injured Manhattan Beach racer

Infrastructure! news from ID. Injured cyclist wants Boise bike lanes improved I have a hint for you, there’s a manual available from the Dutch government that lays out how to build safe bicycle infrastructure that will attract cyclists while keeping them safe and happy that only costs about $110 US or so…

Another infrastructure/wreck article from Jolly Olde. Crash could cost cyclist dream career This is another road defect that was brought to the attention of the powers that be long before the wreck it caused.

More on “More cyclists means fewer wrecks for everyone” meme that seems to be developing. INSIDE TRACK: More cyclists will make our roads safer for everyone As pointed out here before, If everyone gets out of private motor vehicles and walks, rides a bike, or takes transit, then deaths from private motor vehicles will drop to zero and drivers of transit and delivery vehicles will identify with cyclists and pedestrians because most likely they will use one of those modes to get to work themselves.

Back to the grind, and the Feed

I didn’t see the TdF broadcast, but I did read on the web that Cav was withdrawn from the Tour because of that shoulder injury. In other bicycle news I’m still trying to learn how to draw with the CAD program, but I’m getting better. The last attempt almost looked like a bicycle. ;)

Staying at my wife’s mother’s house does bad things for my diet and work habits. I normally get up about 1000 or so and have coffee and BP meds for breakfast, and then something substantial for lunch around 1500 to 1530 or so, then a late dinner. Here I’m an hour earlier because of the different time zone meaning my 1200CDT updates come in at 1300EDT so I have to wait longer for the Feed folder to update, and I’m also up between 0800 and 0900 so even longer. Also I’m not very social until lunch, which happens much earlier than what I have become accustomed to 1230 to 1300 and tending very hard to the 1230 time.

Since the number of links I’m trying to keep open is causing my computer to run slow and crash, this might get a bit disjointed as I skip back and forth around the post to get things in the right order instead of skipping around the links to get the links posted in the correct order.

Up first is a right hook in Houston. Bicyclist hit, killed by truck in NE Houston Cyclist proceeding with the right of way in the crosswalk gets flattened by a driver turning blindly into him. Since this was an intersection wreck protocols might have helped avoid the wreck or reduced the consequences. Getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would prevent a future wreck.

And something we cyclists have been getting for years has become “mainstream” in that it is happening to others as well. Rolling Coal: Conservatives ‘screw’ Obama by modifying trucks to spew toxic black smoke I have been the recipient of this several times, and there are articles documenting that it happens to LEO as well, who sometimes arrest the drivers for assault and impound the vehicles. There was a case in OR… Truck driver does ‘rollin’ coal’ on riders, and one of them is a bike cop Schadenfreude at its finest.

Good news from an OH wreck. Kettering doctor improves after bike crash SWSS wreck with the cyclist one of 1000 on a charity ride with posted warnings for drivers about bicycles in the road. Hit-from-behind protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. But stopping to think for a moment, do they even have charity rides like this in the Netherlands? I guess I’m going to have to send an e-mail over to the British ex-pat over there reporting on Dutch infrastructure to find out.

Serious bike v car wreck in IL. Cyclist, 28, struck and killed Thursday on Northwest Side “Near” the intersection, not definitively “in” the intersection, so nothing to hang a recommendation on for the built environment, but I’m pretty sure that getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would prevent a similar wreck.

Moving a little west to IA, we get another hit-from-behind wreck. Charles City cyclist killed Thursday night Well, aside from the barest facts on direction of travel and age of parties involved there ain’t much to go on here. And because I can’t even get Google Maps to open up I can’t get a street view of the intersection. So that leaves hit-from-behind protocols that might avoid or reduce damages from the wreck with the built environment and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent the wreck from happening.

A PA wreck in blotter form, the last paragraph in the blotter. Sentinel police log for July 5 Left cross, then took the kid home without ever leaving a name or number. Nothing on the actual mode or location, but it was obviously the driver’s fault.

A hit-from-behind wreck in CA. Dutch Flat cyclist dies in crash near Foresthill Bridge Lots of information about the driver’s state of intoxication (massive), and later updates have possession of meth to go with the drunk off his … Protocols might have been useful at a lower speed, getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. More CHP: Cyclist, 52, hit and killed by suspected DUI driver

Solo wreck in CA (hey, it happens!) Update: Mountain biker dies from solo fall at Ski Summit While statistically you have a much higher chance of a fatality with a motor vehicle involved than in a solo fall, that still leaves a non-zero chance of dying in a solo fall, and those odds go way up when there is no pavement available.

Then again, the quickest way to get killed on a bike is at a poorly-designed intersection between a trail and a major arterial. Update: Bike rider killed at deadly Fullerton intersection; second cyclist killed at same location since 2012 Two wrecks at the same intersection are not definitive, but highly indicative of an infrastructure problem. That the wrecks were so similar also is highly indicative. More Bicyclist killed in Fullerton crash with car

Another cyclist killed in a crosswalk, this time in CA. Salinas cyclist killed in hit-and-run crash early Saturday Intersection wreck by a speeding car with no word on which direction either the cyclist or the weapon vehicle were going, but the reported speed of the weapon vehicle negates any hope to use the protocols and renders “up to Dutch” infrastructure useless without a barrier.

A wreck in MA where the cyclist failed to stop at a trail crossing. Cyclist injured in Brewster collision Still can’t get Google maps up to check the intersection, so I’m going to have to go with standard intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Two wrecks in short order in the Great White North. Two cyclists seriously injured in separate accidents in Halton One mountain bike wreck on technical obstacles so nothing to do with this blog, and the other was with an illegal vehicle on the roads but nothing about the mode. If the off-road vehicles respect Dutch style bicycle infrastructure then that would do the trick to prevent a future wreck, otherwise this is not a preventable wreck. More on the technical obstacles wreck. Cyclist seriously injured at Kelso

A serious wreck in far West Canuckistan. Australian cyclist in recovery after suffering serious injuries in head-on collision OK the cyclist was JRA when the weapon vehicle turned onto the street and hit him head on. Nothing on which side of the street he was riding when he was hit, but since they didn’t immediately blame the cyclist for the wreck I have to assume the cyclist was hit riding on the correct side of the road. But still nothing on any charges for the driver of the weapon vehicle. As for avoiding the wreck with built infrastructure, good luck on that. Get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. More Update: Cyclist injured in collision

A wreck in the UK where a cyclist was center-punched crossing an intersection. Cyclist suffers broken hip in crash, Magherafelt Court told This is the UK equivalent of a left cross, and everyone knows the vehicle making the turning movement has to yield to through vehicles, including bicycles. Still this is hardly enough punishment for nearly killing someone.

A Bike v ped wreck in Oz. Elderly pedestrian struck by cyclist on Bassendean bike path dies Cyclist also injured, and nobody knows what happened.

A bad wreck in Enn Zed but LEO have not finished their investigation. Cyclist killed in collision with courier van At this point I know the wreck was in an intersection, and the wrecked bike shows signs of this being a centerpunch wreck, so intersection protocols are mostly mooted by lack of reaction time. Get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent delivery trucks from hitting cyclists.

So many things to do, and the Feed

Since we are in Mrs. the Poet’s old stomping grounds we are doing a lot of “catch up” visits with her HS and early college friends, and what previously had been hen parties are this year becoming couples meetings, I guess because somebody wants to show off a husband or new boyfriend (although at the ages of Mrs. the Poet’s HS and college friends, calling them “boyfriends” is kinda silly). So I have to get this done early so I can get into my “eating in public” clothes in time to drive to the restaurant. That means showering, shaving and the whole nine yards. :P I’m not a big fan of getting “dressed up”, as you may have noticed.

Opening with this because it makes me extremely perturbed. Woman gets 1-year jail sentence in Fort Collins hit-and-run that led to bicyclist’s death Kill a cyclist, run away for days while hiding the car, get one year of work release… TANJ!

A PA left cross wreck. Susquehanna Township crash Cyclists do not “go away” when you turn your head. This driver saw the cyclist coming, admits she saw the cyclist coming, and was surprised to find the cyclist bouncing off the passenger side of the car when she turned? I call BS on this one. It appears that the cyclist used the turn parallel to the direction of travel part of the protocols from the appearance of the bicycle wreckage and still got hit very hard on the head, so protocols not very effective in this wreck, probably due to available reaction time. Getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would be required to prevent a wreck like this in the future.

Another wreck in SoCal. Young boy killed in San Bernardino bicycling collision Another intersection wreck with no information forthcoming from LEO on what happened. Intersection protocols for the young cyclist might have helped, and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would keep young people and multi-ton killing machines from making an acquaintance.

Don’t let the heading picture fool you, this wreck in the Great White North was on a sidewalk. Cyclist charged following collision in Kitchener Why was the weapon vehicle on the sidewalk, and why was the cyclist the only one charged in this wreck? Since sidewalk cyclists are evidence that whatever infrastructure is allocated to bicycles is perceived as “unsafe” by the cyclist I only see one option to prevent a similar wreck in the future, getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch”.

Back in the saddle, and the Feed

That’s a figurative saddle, not a bike saddle. Not much bike riding going on in this burg. I mean sure it’s physically small and flat, but there is also not a whole heck of a lot here. You literally have one grocery store, one coffeehouse, one gas station/C-store, but TWO restaurants. And better bring a credit card or lots of cash at the restaurants because neither one is cheap. I haven’t been by the coffeehouse when they are open so I don’t know what their prices look like, but the C-store is typical NY prices (high).

Up first is the story with the most links, a 13 YO killed in a practice ride wreck. Teen cyclist killed while riding in Story County and Ames student killed in bicycle and SUV collision also 13-YEAR OLD TIMOTHY JENKS, MEMBER OF AMES CYCLONES AQUATIC CLUB, KILLED IN BICYCLING COLLISION As I post this all the reports are consistent that the cyclist touched wheels and lost control while riding a double paceline just as the weapon vehicle was passing the peloton. If only there was a safe place for young cyclists to learn the art of riding in pacelines without the danger of getting run over by a light armored vehicle if you make a mistake. Or IOW this is mostly an infrastructure problem, not a cyclist or motorist problem.

Next up sorta close to where I am now, with two links. Police identify cyclist who was injured in Syracuse crash and Cyclist injured in downtown Syracuse crash remains in critical condition OK the way this reads now the driver of the truck just pulled away from the construction site while the cyclist was crossing legally in front of him, destroying the tricycle and nearly the cyclist riding it. The truck and truck driver were both undamaged [sarcasm]thank [$DEITY][/sarcasm]. This is mostly an infrastructure wreck, as the cyclist at this point appears to have been in the intersection legally, not violating any traffic controls and the truck driver just could not see him there under the nose of the truck when he pulled into the intersection. Intersection protocols generally only work when you aren’t getting hit from the side by the front of the vehicle.

Another train v cyclist wreck. Cyclist injured after running into MAX train Another cyclist hits the side of the train, so it’s not like he didn’t see it. Perhaps another brake failure? Otherwise the usual methods for avoiding getting hit by trains apply.

Possible buzz job in CA. Cyclist Injured on Highway 116 near Sebastopol Not a whole lot of information from LEO on this wreck… And since I can’t see any pictures of the wrecked bike I can’t say anything solid from that, either.

Another train v bike wreck in CA this time. Downey bike rider killed in collision with Metro Blue Line Once again, trains are easy to see and hear, particularly the type of trains that hit this cyclist. Other than that I really don’t know how to avoid getting hit with a train. I mean, they are big and colorful and extremely noisy and they can only be found where there are existing train tracks and there are usually crossing guards, or at least warning lights.

A MO cyclist is killed but LEO think they have the killer. Suspect surrenders in hit-and-run death of cyclist in St. Louis Nothing on the mode so no way to say if any of the protocols would have helped or if this was an infrastructure problem, or if the guy was just an idiot that hit a cyclist and left him to die sorta on purpose. And moving to the comments we find that this was the cyclist killed last week by street racers running a 4 way stop at high speed while the cyclist rolled through the stop at a very slow speed.

I am seriously having problems understanding this narrative from the UK. Cyclist injured in tractor overtaking incident Parsing it as best I can the driver was going to pass both the cyclist and the tractor the cyclist was following in a single maneuver, but failed to clear either one before there was oncoming traffic on the other side of the road and pulled back in on top of the cyclist, then left the scene.

Another one of those things you just can’t avoid as a cyclist. Swindon cyclist stabbed to death in ‘vicious’ attack A cyclist-hater (or more than one) waited in the dark on this cycle path to waylay a cyclist. Not known at this time if the attack was on a particular cyclist or if this cyclist was chosen at random.

Now this is just too much. Cyclist Verbally Abused Following Accident You get hit by a car, are not at fault for the wreck and random people feel the need and the right to berate you for causing traffic delays? Where does this fool get off?

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: Streetsblog scores at the LA press awards; West Hill’s bike shop gutted in weekend fire Ted is much too modest as he contributed to the report that won the award, and you can see his name at the bottom of the list of shared winners.

Infrastructure! news from the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Hit-and-run drivers can no longer slide The law is going into effect finally, that makes hit-and-run functionally equivalent to DUI manslaughter or homicide. So the only thing running does is make LEO look for you, which can cause them to get angry because you made them do actual police work. This is not usually conducive to a calm and peaceful arrest and initial detainment.

Infrastructure from the Great White North. Ottawa is still not safe enough for cyclists Nothing I can add to this.

With statistics like these you would think someone would be on the case to improve conditions. A cyclist hit every 3 days Not as bad as NYC, but still considering the size of the city way higher than it should be.

Sports medicine leads to quicker recovery from motor vehicle wrecks. Geometry helps injured Palmer Township cyclist get back on the road This should be a standard approach, not the exception.

And those were all the fresh links I could find today. Get ‘em while they are fresh!

Busy as the proverbial one-armed wallpaper hanger, and the Feed

We’re leaving tonight for NY taking a 2 day ride on the Dawgbus. As a result I expect to be out of communications until I hit a bus station, and I don’t expect to see the inside one of those long enough to establish communications with the blog and still get the things I need to get done at the station for life support done. We here at Casa de El Poeta have been taking the Dawgbus on long trips since before there was a Casa de El Poeta, so we are experienced in the ins and outs of dealing with transfers and tracking luggage and whatnot. One of the hardest things about long trips with few or no layovers is life support. They have toilets on the bus, but no food or drink you didn’t carry on with you. So one of the things that has to be done when you hit the station is hydration, buying a cold drink (at 3 times the going rate at a C-store or vending machine away from a bus station) is usually a must.

Anyway, we are packing clothes for the trip, electronics are being sorted into the go bag, and last-minute preparations (getting a haircut for one) are being taken care of. Which is making Mrs. the Poet and me run around like the proverbial chickens.

Up first is a UK wreck, where the driver in a hit-and-run tried to eliminate the witnesses. Gee, you would think hitting the cyclist might have been on purpose. Man who went to check on injured cyclist is hurt as police seek aggressive driver following Ilminster incident The deliberate assault with a motor vehicle on the witness/person giving comfort after the initial hit-and-run make me strongly suspect the driver hitting the cyclist was no more an “accident” than the assault on the witness. Take it from me when someone targets you with their vehicle it is very hard to avoid getting hit. What makes me angry about this one is that the initial assault will be treated like “an accident” and little to no punishment will be levied, but the second assault will be treated as an assault with a deadly weapon because there can be no doubt about the deliberateness of the second attack.

Update on the GA cyclist assaulted with an SUV earlier this month. Injured cyclist’s family, girlfriend remain hopeful The red Nitro should still be damaged, or there would have been a report from a body shop by now. BOLO to my readers who are local to the wreck in suburban Atlanta.

Speaking of assault with a motor vehicle, this double hit-from-behind is either an assault or a driver that has zero competence behind the wheel. Onawa, Iowa, cyclist killed in collision with vehicle; another injured I mean how do you “pass” 2 cyclists so closely that one os dead and the other is critically injured in a ditch?

And what is up with ABQ lately? Two more cyclists hurt in accidents It almost looks like someone was trying to get all the cyclists off the streets, this makes 6 dead or injured since the beginning of June. The wreck with the drunk driver reads like another deliberate assault fueled by alcohol, the garbage truck incident was not covered well enough to allow analysis to avoid. Both wrecks could be prevented by getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch”. Of course part of that is getting the local LEO extremely competent and knowledgable…

Since we are bouncing all over the place, here’s a wreck in MO. Cyclist killed in St. Louis hit-and-run is ID’d; police find car suspected in case and Victim identified in fatal hit and run in north St. Louis also Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run Hit from behind by street racers, and the bike was utterly destroyed. I could not see a single component of the bike that was undamaged. This is another one of those wrecks that the closing speed of the weapon vehicle makes avoiding the wreck impossible, and segregated infrastructure the only way to prevent the wreck. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any way of getting stoopid people out from behind the wheel with the current licensing system.

Speaking of Stoopid Drivers, here is an AL wreck where a driver makes a right turn directly into a cyclist crossing with the light. Cyclist injured in Monday accident in Gulf Shores identified I have never seen a wreck that better illustrated “looking but not seeing” than this one. There were 2 cyclists riding single file and crossing with the green and the driver went right into the trailing cyclist. Completely and utterly blind to the existence of the cyclist in front of the car. I would say intersection protocols but nope, not going to help in a wreck like this. I have to say the only way to prevent a wreck like this even with infrastructure “up to Dutch” would be somehow preventing this particular driver from getting access to a motor vehicle, much less a license to drive one. Even a segregated cycle track with separate signal phases for bicycles are helpless in the face of a blind driver making a right on red.

OK this wreck is just bizarre. Bicyclist killed in crash at 15th, Market OK I’m going to go with the “child’s bike” on this one as a BMX style bike, but the rest of the report of the middle-aged man riding against traffic and pulling into the intersection against a red light he couldn’t see because there was no signal for wrong-way traffic…

Another strange wreck report, this time from GA. Cyclist hit, killed on Peach Orchard Road SWSS by a cyclist riding against traffic? I would really have to see the wreckage of the bike to make a call on this one. First I would have to say that if the salmon accusation was accurate then ride with traffic and apply hit-from-behind protocols to avoid, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

A buzz job in IN. 1 injured in Elkhart truck, bicycle crash The truck passed the bicycle and the cyclist wrecked after hitting the curb, yeah that’s pretty much one of the definitions of a buzz job. The only reason the cyclist wasn’t run off the road was because he wrecked on the curb first. The curb made hit-from-behind protocols unusable (or maybe that was why he wrecked against the curb, trying to go off the road as his escape route), so that only leaves getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” as the viable method to prevent the wreck.

A limited-information wreck in MA. Cyclist injured in Provincetown crash Cyclist wearing a helmet seriously injured in a wreck no involving a motor vehicle? And that’s it?

Another CA cyclist is killed in a wreck. Man hit on bicycle in Monterey dies Other than the ages of the operators involved there ain’t a whole bunch of information on this wreck.

Moving to Canuckistan, this driver is about to get hosed after the cyclist he hit dies a lingering death in hospital. Hit and run charges upgraded after victim succumbs to injuries And there was so much Stoopid being spread in the comments that the comments were closed… Wow!

And the town that saw 5 cyclists nearly killed in a single wreck/assault with a deadly weapon 4 years ago sees another cyclist hurt. Cyclist injured when struck by a car in Kanata Saturday morning And we get another person who believes in the power of the majik foam hat in preventing injury to things not even covered by the hat…

Update on the wreck where the driver was let off because the speed limit sign was in the wrong place when the cyclist was hit waking the bike through the crosswalk. I miss Jaye every day: Partner of cyclist killed in crash plans to sue driver Her wife is suing the driver that was almost double the speed limit when he killed the cyclist. And the infrastructure hasn’t been corrected either as the wife was nearly hit while placing flowers at the site.

The wheels of justice grind exceedingly slow in Enn Zed. Truckie who hit cyclist in court The cyclist was plainly visible with lights and reflective garments which kind of puts the earlier coroner’s recommendations that all cyclists wear hi-viz in proper perspective. (It only works in court to get more money out of the driver that hits you, not to actually prevent a wreck.)

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: The risks of biking in the Valley, Pippa makes it all the way, and a road rager attacks rescuer

Lifestyle as the relatives of a cyclist killed back when this blog was still young transfer the reward money for the arrest of the killer driver to a dog park memorial for the cyclist. Family of cyclist killed in hit-and-run donates reward fund for Capitola dog park This is poetic, because the cyclist’s dog survived the wreck and waited with the body until it was discovered when people went to investigate the barking dog.

And those were all the links that gave me fits today. No giggles.

I have no social obligations today so I will be able to find and filter as many links as possible before my Mental Hygiene day tomorrow (you have no idea how mind-cleansing it feels to be someone else for a day, even just in a game). Either of the Sparrows (Jr. or Sr.) or my high-level Warmage Red Feather allow me to “leave myself” for a while and “solve problems” that are outside my usual life experience (particularly Red Feather, who is 13th level and employed as part of a team of trouble-shooters for a group that helps maintain order against the constant opening of portals to other worlds and planes, with monsters that sometimes wander through and cause disruption either intentional or otherwise). Red Feather is mainly an armored mage who can get up close to a battle and deliver massive firepower (with 39 spell slots available per day) from a spellbook of more than 200 spells (last session he went toe to toe with a Red Dragon and walked away untouched while the dragon beat a hasty retreat).

Up first is an update on a South TX hit-and-run. Man pleads not guilty in Edinburg cyclist’s fatal hit-and-run Wow, a $1 Million bond for killing a cyclist…

Either a buzz job or a drunk cyclist, or both, in OK. Rider injured near Roland It was speculated by LEO on the scene that a semi that was in front of the weapon vehicle may have sucked the cyclist off the bike lane and into the traffic lane in front of the weapon vehicle. Or he may have been drunk. Assuming the first part is true there is nothing the cyclist could have done to avoid this wreck, getting sucked or blown out of your lane is way outside anything a cyclist can deal with by him or her self. Alcohol consumption on the other hand is something a cyclist can do something about.

Out in CA someone assaulted a cyclist and was charged with attempted murder. Three arrested in attack on cyclist in Santa Ana Um, I don’t think this is something most cyclists have anything to worry about, unless you are or were a member of a street gang and still live in your old ‘hood.

Seattle is highly pissed that killing a cyclist carries a lower fine than running a red light or littering. The Morning News: Did You Know You Can Hit and Kill a Cyclist and Get Off with a $175 Ticket? and Driver who hit, killed teenage cyclist fined just $175 The cyclist was crossing the street legally and waited for traffic in both directions to stop before crossing in the crosswalk, and the driver of the weapon vehicle didn’t stop despite there being a vehicle stopped at the marked crosswalk and hit the cyclist as he came from the front of the stopped vehicle into the lane of the weapon vehicle. Near as I can tell the cyclist was 101% in compliance with both the letter and spirit of the law and common sense. Even the intersection protocols would absolve the cyclist of any blame in this wreck, while the segregated infrastructure only helps as much as people driving in motor vehicles comply with the laws. A little more backup from the DA would help on this one, there is a WA law that is specific to wrecks like this that allows prison or jail terms for killing people walking or riding a bicycle. That $175 ticket is just lame and feeble.

Update on another WA wreck, now with make of weapon vehicle. New clues in bicyclist hit-run: Police know what kind of car they’re looking for Well, that’s good to know.

Schadenfreude in OR as a douche diesel driver is arrested for assault. Truck driver does ‘rollin’ coal’ on riders, and one of them is a bike cop This has happened to me several times, and I was tickled mauve to read this article…

Another OR driver violates the basic speed law. Bicyclist seriously injured in morning crash east of Philomath The cyclist was taking the lane because the shoulder was too narrow to fit his tadpole trike. The driver was just flat going too fast to be able to avoid hitting the cyclist. First and foremost the infrastructure was sub-standard if the trike couldn’t fit, second the driver breaking right instead of passing to the left negates the hit-from-behind protocols

Dang, they have been having a bad 2 weeks in ID…Cyclist hurt, driver ticketed in Emerald Street crash Left cross in the bike lane, and the driver given a ticket on the spot. Major kudos to the LEO responsible for issuing the ticket.

A very strange wreck in NYC. Bicyclist condition improving; injured in crash in Clove Lakes Park (with photos) The cyclist ran off the path and into a parked truck? And at the time of the report nothing from the cyclist. Reports from the comments section to the effect the park was off-limits to bicycles, and poorly signed to that effect such that the cyclist could have entered the park and never encountered any notice that he was violating the law. Which still doesn’t explain how he ran into the truck.

A GA wreck with two weapon vehicles and nobody to tell the bicycle side of the story. Teen cyclist struck, killed in two-car accident Given the high level of detail about the cyclist’s path prior to the wreck, it seems likely that he had just left either his home, or was returning to his home, at the time of the wreck. The second impact was pure pinball off the first and into the second vehicle. To avoid use ALL the intersection protocols, especially the bit about obeying traffic controls. Since this was a residential area with a 45 MPH highway running through it it would take massive changes to the infrastructure to prevent a wreck like this.

Update on another GA wreck. Atlanta cyclist still critical, Georgia bikers less safe than most I really hope he recovers at least somewhat, enough to engage in a meaningful life again. Police are still trying to find the driver that assaulted him.

More information from an AZ wreck earlier this week (previously linked to in Tucson Velo). Bicyclist killed in early morning crash; man arrested and charged This was a cyclist hit from behind in the bike lane in an area that did not allow for an escape route when the weapon vehicle entered the bike lane. The specifics are still the same, American style infrastructure works only as far as drivers respect it, and as the driver in this case did not respect even the motor vehicle infrastructure that dominates the landscape in Tucson respecting bicycle infrastructure is a bit outside the expectations.

More on the NM cyclist hit by a train report. Photos released of items worn by bicyclist killed by train I noticed that there was no music player or earbuds in the rider’s things, blowing “cyclist could not hear the train over his iPod” theory out of the water. Which now makes the “Why?” question all the harder to answer.

Another NM cyclist is hit-and-run by a drunk driver. Cyclist injured in hit-and-run crash Intersection wreck, but given the state of the driver it’s not known if protocols would have been of use in avoiding or mitigating injury. Also because of the inebriated state of the driver the only infrastructure that would have made a difference would be grade-separated and barrier protected.

Another NM cyclist is hit by/with a garbage truck. Cyclist seriously injured in crash with garbage truck The bike was too damaged to tell which direction the cyclist was hit, and the narrative didn’t provide any clues either. Also as many wrecks between pedestrians bicycles and motor vehicles as they reported infrastructure is a major consideration.

And we can’t seem to get away from NM today with all the wrecks this week. 4 metro bicyclists hurt or killed so far in June

A wreck in the RAAM. Race Across America cyclist injured in accident The cyclist was hit by her follow vehicle when the follow vehicle was hit from behind by a semi, not the combination that cyclists usually have to deal with. And really if the semi could not get slowed down for the follow vehicle, the cyclist would have taken the hit from the semi unprotected and at speed…

Infrastructure that keeps fast semi trucks away from slow cyclists wold be the only thing that could prevent another wreck like this.

This article and the statistic in the headline just make my blood run cold. 100 cyclists injured in Vancouver every month during peak season That’s 3 a day on average during the summer.

In Oz another cyclist is hit by a bus, at the same corner that a different cyclist was hit with a truck. Grocery day will be very light, and the Feed

Since Mrs. the Poet and I will be leaving Monday night we only have to get about half the groceries we normally do, because they won’t stay good until we get back. So, no produce except maybe a small bag of lettuce, only a single loaf of bread if any, no dairy at all. And lots of snacks we can put in our carry-on luggage so we don’t have to buy the over-priced “food” they sell in the bus stations. It’s bad enough we will be buying drinks priced 3 times what they cost at the local C-store on the corner, especially when our caloric needs will be so low.

Up first is an update on the Milt Olin wreck in CA. Family of cyclist fatally struck by sheriff’s car files claim against Los Angeles County This story has stunk to high heaven ever since it first broke, and the stench has just been getting worse every day, first with the refusal to hand the investigation over to the CHP to at least give the appearance of impartiality, second when an investigation that should have been wrapped in a week took more than 5 months to be delivered to the DA, and third when the DA refused to allow any part of that report to be released to the public. The facts of the case are quire damning to the driver, the cyclist was hit from behind while riding in the marked bike lane by a cruiser going over the speed limit without lights and siren. The pictures I have seen from the crime scene show the one skid mark left by the victim’s back tire at impact and skid marks after the impact (unless the picture was somehow reversed, but then the question would have to be why did the driver stop using the brakes right before impact?), and the impact was several feet from the lane marker.

A buzz job in OR. Cyclist injured in vehicle accident near Sandy and Man injured after being clipped by rear-view mirror on Highway 26 The crime scene pictures show one of those awful rumble stripped shoulders that turn what could be a nice place to ride when it’s clean into something that can kill you with a second’s inattention. This means the rider was forced to ride in the traffic lane but he did not take the lane to make himself more visible. This is (or should be, I haven’t read the protocols page in a while) the first thing to avoiding getting hit from behind, riding where you can be seen in the lane. This also gives you more room to move to the right to dodge wayward motor vehicles that are getting too close.

A wreck in AZ that LEO are wrongly blaming on the cyclist not crossing the street in the crosswalk. Peoria accident leaves teen cyclist injured Since the basic report is so flawed other than noting that this was an intersection wreck so intersection protocols should apply I got nothing, except INFRASTRUCTURE! Oh, and trained LEO.

Still in AZ another cyclist is squished. UPDATE X2:CYCLIST KILLED ON SPEEDWAY; DRIVER ARRESTED ON SECOND DEGREE MURDER When I first filtered this report the driver hadn’t even been caught yet, much less charged with murder. Hit from behind in the bike lane seems to be popular today, use the protocols to avoid, particularly the “have an escape route” part. And if that bike lane had been built to Dutch standards the weapon vehicle would never have gotten near him in the first place.

A PA blotter report on a left cross. Sentinel police log for June 19 I think I actually had this wreck in the blog last week sometime. Intersection wreck so protocols and infrastructure. Kudos to LEO for immediately handing out tickets to the driver for violating the right of way and failing to signal.

Another report on that CA hit-and-run I had a skimpy link to yesterday. Cyclist killed in Sacramento hit and run Nothing new, just another link.

OK this is just not right, with two links. P.E.I. man granted day parole two years after killing Alberta cyclist and Drunk driver who killed Edmonton woman gets day parole Apparently “day parole” is like “work release” in the US. Get out, go to work, and be back in your cell by a certain time every day.

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: CABO opposes protected bikeway bill; Brit driver kills 5-year old, then says shit happens

Someone else noticed a major change to the legal infrastructure. Jury Awards “Precedent-Setting” $2.4 Million to Doored Cyclist With the added information I am also wondering how they figured the cyclist was 21% at fault for getting hit by the car door when she was getting physically forced into the door zone. Maybe because she was there to get hit?

Actual on-the-ground testing of that pseudo-Dutch intersection treatment. Portlander’s ‘protected intersection’ concept gets first on-street demo (in Minneapolis) The reports that 8 YO were able to use the infrastructure properly first time without instructions to move as they desired on their bikes is really good news.

The good kind of infrastructure article. Buying a bike? Now you can use Twitter to find out if it’s stolen property

Busting up and preventing bike theft in NY. Bicyclist follows accused bike thieves, leads to arrest of three Syracuse teenagers

If you live in Chuck this is an even better kind of lifestyle link. Chucktown BikeDown Cheap alcohol, but don’t over do it because if you get to all of the venues you have a chance at winning a pretty cool bike.

And those were all the links that gave me fits or giggles today.
