I was not expecting to be here, and the Feed

I got the news last night after putting the blog to bed that my ride to the festival was going to be delayed by the driver having a doctor’s visit that was rescheduled and not something that could be rescheduled again. So, here I am. While I was waiting something interesting came in the mail: the bill for my new health insurance policy, showing how much I owed and how much my subsidy will be. I’m going to be walking to places that allow me to pay it in cash, because my premium after subsidy is pocket change, literally. I find more change in the roads and on the sidewalks every month than my insurance premium, which means I can pay for health insurance while I’m walking to pick up groceries and any number of other things.

Up first is a couple of links to what now looks like an assault with a motor vehicle on triathletes training prior to an event in NOLA. Athletes compete in New Orleans Ironman Triathlon the event and the updated wreck report Motorist accused of killing cyclist, injuring another before Ironman race says wreck not his fault Driver claiming a SWSS is thwarted by a witness and by LEO capable of interpreting the physical evidence that showed otherwise. I would state that things like this (driver claiming SWSS refuted by other evidence) would happen much more frequently if more cyclists had cameras recording their rides. The weapon vehicle in this case had two impact sites on the front as well as two impact sites on the windshield that showed the trajectory of both cyclists, and if I’m reading the report right (that I can’t link to my blog, sorry) the trajectory of the second cyclist hit, the one that survived, showed him moving to the right when he was hit, away from the car.

A cyclist is killed riding in the bike lane in America’s Paradise. LETTER: Hawaii Bicycling League Weighs in on Kihei Fatality Hit from behind in the bike lane, is there any better example of “entitled” driver than that?

Our first Infrastructure! link is from MIT via Austin TX. MIT maps Austin bike wrecks and includes worst streets for accidents The map looks pretty much like a street map of Austin, with some streets a little brighter lighted than others. Austin

A similar treatment for L.A. Interactive Map Shows Where Bike Crashes Happen The Most In L.A. There are significant blank areas in the L.A. map. Are they due to a lack of surface streets or a lack of cyclists willing to use them? And I noticed a lot fewer intersections are lit up compared to mid-block wrecks.

Is this a “breakthrough” in bicycle safety for cyclists in America’s Copenhagen? With grant application, PBOT finally acknowledges ‘safety issue’ with streetcar tracks Cyclists have been telling them for 7 years that they placed the tracks in such a manner that cyclists were at risk, and now they are paying attention and trying to determine just how bad it really is. First step in fixing a problem is seeing if you have a problem and what the problem is. Also apply that statement to the maps in the above links.

I can totally see these installed in areas with little electricity or street lighting. Glow-in-the-Dark Roads Are Finally Here What these have over retroreflective paints is not needing an external light source to work, making “seen by” bike lights more effective for cyclists. If the road shows you where to go, then all you really need is something that lights up things above the surface to get obstructions hanging over the road.

More infrastructure news from GA. Cyclists cautiously optimistic about bike path changes You can tell a lot about the problems riding a bike in Hotlanta is “Subjective Safety” to quote Hembrow .

I guess this is Lifestyle? Stolen bike spotted while woman reports it stolen My reaction to this is if someone tells me they have a gun in their bag while I’m trying to detain them with stolen property, beat them senseless to keep them from getting inside the bag. But then I beat up a truck that passed me on the right last year, and I’m 3-0-4 against pickup trucks lifetime (I totalled out 3, none have “totalled” me yet, and 4 others have withdrawn from battle after first strike).

And now a word from our Ted. Morning Links: BOLO for dangerous San Fernando Valley driver and disappearing Bike Plan bikeways I hate when planned-for things are dropped from bike plans, leaving gaping holes in the network.

And those were all the links I was not expecting to be home to share today. Enjoy!

I wrote this headline knowing people would not see it until after midnight, and the Feed

Here’s the sitch (to quote an old cartoon). I don’t wanna have so many links to post on Monday, it seriously harshes my vibe to use another old expression. I also have (had) something to do this evening, so I won’t be able to hang around and post the afternoon Feed links. But this also means I will be posting any links that come in the midnight Feed.

Up first we have more on that fatal NYC hit-and-run. Driver Fatally Strikes Bushwick Cyclist, Hits Cars, Leaves Scene [Updated] and Bicyclist Killed in Brooklyn Hit-and-Run Crash, NYPD Says Another one Neighbors Mourn ‘Good Father’ Cyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run More links by still no more information than there was in the second Gothamist link from yesterday. Nothing has changed on the advice side either, nothing the cyclist could have done and since the driver went salmon to escape infrastructure would have been just one more thing for the driver to ignore.

Maybe two days’ ride from WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell, we get a minor wreck. Bicyclist not seriously hurt after collision with truck Salmon cyclist hit by driver not watching where he was going. Lots of blame to go around, but I would put equal blame on both. I blame this mostly on physical infrastructure and a lack of education on how cyclists are supposed to use it.

Something happened to a NOLA cyclist. CYCLIST KILLED ON CHEF MENTEUR OK it changed while I was creating the link. As of right now the cyclists were hit from behind (!2! of them) while riding in the right lane. Apparently watching where you are going and not hitting slower vehicles is not a high priority for NOPD enforcement. Protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

Another deliberate assault on a cyclist by a driver, this time in IN. Police: Driver intentionally struck bicyclist Driver made a close, “punishment” pass, cyclist complained, driver decides to “upgrade” the punishment, and gets charged with assault.

Reaction to the cyclist getting hit by a red light runner in the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike, again (they got a whole year just barely in second place). Lakewood Ranch residents concerned over bicyclist safety Seriously, I don’t know what they could have done about this one. The driver was running a red light. Had the cyclists been using infrastructure that was “up to Dutch” the light would still have been red while they were crossing, they just would have been in a different part of the intersection when they got hit. Maybe confiscating and crushing the vehicles used in a fatal cyclist or pedestrian wreck will have some beneficial effect on lowering the number of pedestrians and cyclists who get hit?

A CA cyclist is released from the hospital after getting left crossed. Novato cyclist released from hospital following collision with SUV Funny, I don’t recall reading about the driver getting released from jail… Intersection protocols if they would do any good to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

A CA cyclist is passing stopped vehicles between lanes (legal in CA) when one driver decides to “not stop”. Bicyclist injured in Watsonville crash I put this one on the driver, completely. The cyclist was riding legally past stopped cars, so had the driver merely remained in the lane and not moved sideways (turned into the cyclist) there would have been no wreck. From the injuries it sounds like the driver moved pretty abruptly into the cyclist. Infrastructure to remove cyclists from proximity to entitled drivers.

Another link to the right hook concrete mixer bicycle wreck. BICYCLIST STRUCK AND KILLED BY CEMENT TRUCK IN SAN MARCOS As I suspected yesterday. Intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure right to keep cement trucks from trying to occupy the same space as cyclists.

A cyclist hits a stop sign running vehicle. Cyclist Hit Near Coronado Golf Course Entrance Because it was the cyclist’s speed and not the car’s that did the damages, the damages were fairly light. I still wouldn’t want to be in that kind of wreck. Intersection protocols mooted by lack of reaction time, and infrastructure mooted (partially) by the driver ignoring the traffic control and entering the bike infrastructure when the cyclist was present. Making drivers responsible for all costs when they are in an at-fault wreck with a cyclist, including lost wages and medical costs might cause people to look out for cyclists here like it does in the Netherlands.

Another day, another link from Ted. Help stop hit-and-runs, stop a Burbank equestrian bridge grab, and your Morning Links

I’m having a problem figuring this one out. Bicyclist crashes while riding on Highway 101 The wreck I’m not having any trouble figuring out, the cyclist was unable to look out of traffic and watch the road surface at the same time and hit an obstruction in the road, excuse me the shoulder of the road. It’s the part about bicycles not allowed on the freeways that I’m not understanding. 101 is a US highway, and as such is required to be available to all legal roads users. Then they were saying stuff about the freeway not being open to bicycles there. !?!

Today seems to be our day for salmon everything. Cyclist in ICU following vehicle crash on Kings Driver not looking at what is in front of him/her runs into salmon cyclist in front of the vehicle while pulling out of a parking lot, probably turning right. To avoid don’t salmon and use intersection protocols, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Final update to a WI hit-and-run. UPDATE: 5 Years in Prison for Deadly Chippewa Falls Bike Crash But she gets to keep her license to drive? I don’t see any mention of a driving ban so it looks like she can start driving as soon as she gets home from prison.

A MA wreck managed to merit a blotter report. Cyclist Struck, Injured on Federal Street Nothing on the mode so I’m at a loss for advice. Intersection wreck so probably intersection protocols, and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would probably prevent it.

Moving on the Jolly Olde we get another joke sentence for hitting a cyclist. Teen driver killed Sheffield cyclist and Motorist locked up after city cyclist killed on Peak road also “Incredibly light” sentence for driver who killed Sheffield cyclist If I’m reading the reports right the driver swung wide and hit the cyclist on the wrong side of the road? And had “57 meters” (187 ft) of the cyclist being visible before hitting him. And the driver never showed any remorse about the killing of the cyclist? Then how the Bloody Hell did he get such a stupidly light sentence? TANJ!

Apparently logic is not a very stringent requirement for coroners in the UK, which seems strange. Woman killed by HGV at Bow roundabout had cycled through a red light, coroner rules Cyclist hit from behind running a red light that did not exist for the truck? How’s that again? I’m sorry but this is so stupidly biased I can’t even say how bad it is because it is so bad it defies description. The cyclist running the red light was hit from behind by the HGV that was NOT running the red light.

Obviously not the same coroner as the previous link. Coroner criticises lack of action over Holborn junction safety after cyclist was killed in coach collision Similar wreck to the one in the link above, a left hook of a cyclist proceeding straight in the bike lane to the left of turning traffic that did not yield. Did not help that the signal was for a right turn as the cyclist passed the back of the weapon vehicle, then for a left.

Cycling drunk is safer for other people than driving drunk, not so safe for the cyclist. Cyclist killed in spate of London road deaths was twice the drink-drive limit

Pro tour cyclist hit by a car while training. US cyclist Chris Horner hospitalized with punctured lung, broken ribs after training accident And Italian drivers have (had?) a reputation for not driving crazy around cyclists.

Moving to Oz for several links we get this ugly wreck first. PHOTOS: Cyclist, 78, injured after collision with car at Coalcliff Leo are sitting on the details but as this was not in an intersection and the debris field was so large I would say it was a hit-from-behind wreck. Protocols, and infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Intersection wreck. Cyclist killed in Rockingham named Well we were given the cyclist’s direction of travel and road, but nothing about the driver’s. Intersection protocols might help, but getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would have prevented the wreck pretty much no matter how it happened.

Another blind driver cuts two cyclists off. Two cyclists injured at Fishing Point The driver was making a u-turn directly in front of the cyclists who hit her car in the driver’s side, giving her a front-row seat to the carnage.

A little Lifestyle article. Cyclist remembered in Howard Beach

Moving west, we get the same thing in CA as the NYC link above. Memorial Ride Set for Bicyclist Killed by DUI Driver

And our only real Infrastructure! report of the day(s). Cyclist petition grows Need I say the comments section only points out the desperate need for the law?

And final link is to a contest (not mine). CALL FOR ENTRIES – PHOTO CONTEST If you are local and have some good pictures of cycling the DFW area, give this contest a try.

And those were all the links that gave me fits and giggles. Mostly fits.

Hail hail, it didn’t happen here, and the Feed

Fortunately for us the baseball sized hail that hit north Texas bypassed Casa de El Poeta in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. All we got was a big breeze and a few more branches lost from the trees in the neighborhood, than have not fared well this winter/spring. We have some people who are just now finishing up clearing the debris from the December ice storm, and now we have further storm debris to clean up. And as you may have read we had another shooting at Ft. Hood, a long bike ride down the road in Killeen. I feel for my brothers in green, and wonder what can be realistically done about the situation. I mean we spend months teaching people how to kill, and knowingly send them into situations where a significant number of people are going to be psychologically damaged, then bring them back home and toss them back into the rest of society with no treatment until they snap. The shooter in this case had already had a minor break and was getting treatment, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Up first is more on that brutal hit-and-run in Boston. Cyclist Involved in Serious Hit & Run Accident in Charlestown More in it does appear to be a right hook, and where an earlier report said they had the driver and weapon vehicle it now says they are still looking. Still they know at least that it was a garbage truck and they don’t have many to look through to find it.

Just a few miles west (Texas “few”) we get another MA hit-and-run. 17-year-old bicyclist injured in hit-and-run in Easthampton Location and debris suggest a hit-from-behind wreck, hopefully LEO will have enough debris to use micro tags in the paint to identify at least the make and year of manufacture of the vehicle if the part had factory paint on it.

A CA report on a driver charged with murder after leaving a social media message that he was going on a “death ride”. Pleasanton teen accused of murder in fatal crash was tailgating, witness testifies I hope the driver never gets out of prison. If he does I hope that he is never allowed to use any motorized transport for the rest of his life, unless he’s being transported to a hospital by an ambulance. Since this is in CA I suspect he’ll get 20 years, serve 10 and be eligible to apply for a new license as soon as he gets out of the prison gate.

A poorly-worded wreck report from the state that is once again most deadliest place to walk or ride a bike in the US. Driver apprehended after fleeing hit-and-run scene The Street View Shows a very bicycle-unfriendly route that is the only crossing of the freeway for over a mile to the south and 3/4 of a mile to the north. If the cyclist was a gutter bunny or sidewalk rider then he would have been in the actual offramp while crossing.

Also from FL comes a suggestion of why not being inside a building or car is so dangerous for people living in or visiting that state. Doreen Landstra, Elderly Woman Who Killed 3 In Car, Gets Suspended License That’s right, no prison time, she gets to keep the car and in a few months she can drive again after killing 3 people in the second time she “mistook” the gas for the brake pedal.

More on the drunk driver getting 8 years for killing a cyclist in Jolly Olde. Drunk, speeding, hit and run van driver who killed cyclist sentenced to eight years in jail and Drunken van driver jailed for eight years after killing Folkingham cyclist I think the sweetest thing about this is the 10 year driving ban doesn’t start until he completes all of his period of incarceration, and can not be reduced via “good behaviour”.

Also in the UK a cyclist “wins” a door prize. Cyclist injured in crash It isn’t often we get a report on a wreck like this from the UK because of their media laws. Since this wreck happened very close to the intersection I suspect the cyclist was trying to avoid getting hooked and rode in the door zone to escape.

And a speeding police car with lights and sirens going must still wait until it is safe to pass a cyclist in Jolly Olde. Injured cyclist wins his damages action and Injured cyclist wins damages action From what I’m reading the cyclist was hit at a pinch point where the cyclist would have had to get on the sidewalk to avoid getting hit because the actual road surface was too narrow to fit a car and a cyclist together without overlap, and the cyclist was hit as far over (to the left because they drive on the wrong side of the roads there) as he could get. Had the driver been going the speed limit or slightly faster than the limit the cyclist would have been able to get to safety but at the speed the weapon vehicle was travelling the cyclist did not have time to clear the pinch point.

That video of a cyclist getting hit from behind at a traffic light that went viral from Oz has resulted in quick retribution from the legal system. Woman fined over cyclist crash I’m just disappointed I had to find this in the comments section of another link instead of the day after it as put up in the Feed folder.

Today’s link from BikingInLA. Morning Links: It’s bike video Friday, Fig4All finally gets a hearing, and meet the real star of Breaking Away

I am still praying for the day when the last of these goes up because that was the last cyclist to ever get hit with a car. ‘Ghost bike’ reminder of cyclists’ danger As I recall the cyclist was hit because the vehicle driver failed to pass with enough room while trying to pass a line of bicycles.

Infrastructure! news from the next town over from WoaB World HQ. Richardson Gets Safe Routes To School Every school should have safe routes as the default condition, because every route would be safe for kids to travel. I still don’t know why this has not been in the “plan” until now.

Article on why cycling feels so unsafe in Oz. Australian journalists wage war on cycling and as an example of that “war” A plea to all cyclists and drivers The driver in the second link is blaming the cyclist for his changing lanes into a lane he could not see clearly was empty or occupied.

And those were all the links that gave me fits or giggles today.

Enter witty headline here, and the Feed

Just not feeling it today, what with the tornado watch and the trees bouncing around the house and the dull grey skies. I ain’t got no funny in me today. I don’t want funny today, I want a good malty dark beer with just enough hops to make it legally a beer. I spent the last month drinking IPAs and beers “inspired” by IPA, and I think I have about reached my limits on bitter hops. I’m looking for something with even less hops than a Shiner Bock, but with more flavor than a schwartzbier. I’m going to be open for suggestions over the weekend (I check the comments twice a day or more), and make my selection come Sunday. And the reason I spent so much time with IPA and similar beers is I bought a six-pack at the beginning of March and it took me most of the month to drink it, plus two singles of a different brand. I never will be an alcoholic at this rate. And that’s something I have always wondered about other poor people, if you don’t have enough to have a place to sleep or food to eat how do you have enough for beer and cigarettes? (wanders off muttering to himself)

Up first was a hard decision today, as we only had one late link to any North American wrecks. This appears to be a right hook from what little we know at this point. Bicyclist killed in Charlestown Right now nothing about this wreck is sure except that it was in an intersection and the cyclist was killed by a heavy vehicle, but it looks like the heavy vehicle was turning right when the cyclist was hit around the middle of the weapon vehicle. At this point they are not sure of the type of vehicle but are going on the assumption that the weapon vehicle was a garbage truck. Anyway, intersection wreck, maybe the protocols would avoid or reduce the amount of damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

The next closest link is from Bermuda, birthplace of grass and shorts that bear the same name. Cyclist accused of pedalling while drunk Note the (lack of) damage done by the drunken cyclist compared to what happens when a drunk drives an SUV into fixed objects. If you can’t get a ride home from someone else take a bike rather than drive a car, your insurance will thank you.

The rest of the wrecks and crashes come from the Antipodes. Cyclist seriously injured Ambulance crew finds injured cyclist near a badly crumpled bike and are not sure what happened? Did they think a Kaiju (giant monster) stepped on him? It was a hit-and-run. Since I could not see the damages to the bike I can’t say how to avoid a wreck like this because I don’t know what kind of wreck this is.

Infrastructure! news from the UK with a funny picture. Council branded ‘pathetic’ as cycling numbers drop in Sevenoaks If the “bike path” the man is riding a tricycle in is any indication of the quality of the local infrastructure, people in charge need to be in prison instead.

Taxes done, and the Feed

Well the waiting for the documents was longer than the time it took to file this year, but we did it. We finally got our tax return in this afternoon. Once again we didn’t make enough money to pay any taxes and all the withholding will be refunded. Even with what I made from the blog and the money I got from Dad’s estate we still did not make more than the standard deduction for a married couple. Which is kinda sad when you stop to think about it, that two people working to the maximum of their ability don’t even make enough to come close to paying taxes. I don’t think we cleared the standard deduction for a single person living alone, either. If we did it wasn’t by very much.

On a more cheerful note I’m getting the dosing schedule worked out so that I have enough allergy meds in my system to be effective, but not so much that my brain shuts down and I just want to find a place to lie down. This is important as I don’t get much done from bed. Of course there are times when all I want to do is waste time.

Allergies barely contained, and the Feed

Just letting you know that while things are not really bad on the health front, they aren’t all that perky either. I’m walking a fine line between not enough and too much on my allergy meds, because if I don’t stay above a therapeutic threshold I get no effect, but just a little over that and I get zonked semi-conscious and unable to function. Add to that the “stuff” I have been visiting the chiropractor over, and let’s just say that getting old ain’t for sissies to quote my wife’s mother.

Also we had our two weeks of spring, the high outside WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell was 80°F.

We got lucky today with few new wrecks to report, all from Jolly Olde. Rope peril for cyclist This is far from the “rope trick” spell used in D&D, this is more like the “clothesline trick” used to take out German motorcycle couriers during WWII. Many of them died, and it almost took out this cyclist. The only way of avoiding this booby trap is a very bright headlight aimed right where it will get on oncoming vehicle operators’ eyes. I think you can see where the problem would be with that.

Next we have another cyclist riding next to an overturning truck. Cyclist injured after lorry overturns on Chester Road, Stretford, causing severe traffic delays I think this makes two very similar wrecks in as many days, and the article is more concerned about the people going to the footy match being delayed than they are about the cyclist who escaped being crushed by inches.

And I really hope this article is not an April Fool’s joke by the media outlet. Kingsley Gordon-Allen killed cyclist Edward Orrey while drink-driving in February last year I’m sure your asking yourself what the heck is going on thinking that this might be a prank? The driver is going to jail for a very long time, and he’s going to be banned from driving for a total of up to 18 years, the 8 he’s in prison plus the additional 10 after release. I have seen DUI drivers that killed a cyclist get 250 hours of community service and a slight fine, which is why I think this might be a prank.

Recovering from the first dose of allergy medicine for the year, and the Feed

I’m now on my third dose of allergy meds for the year, but that first one always knocks me on my butt for some reason. Usually I’m smart enough to just sleep it off and continue with my life after I have adjusted to the stuff, but yesterday I persisted in trying to write a blog post while semi-stoned on medication. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then many people say that about a lot of things that turn out to be really bad ideas. I feel much better today.

Up first is a confusing hit-from-behind wreck in the Rio Grande Valley. Truck hits, kills bicyclist north of Edinburg If I’m reading the narrative right, the cyclist wasn’t actually on the road but possibly on the shoulder or riding in the dirt beside the road, and the truck in question went off the road first then hit the cyclist and then a tree. In case you were wondering the Interstate has parallel access roads where the cyclist could ride legally that are pretty much the only through route north and south in the area which have to be used to access a legal crossing for anyone trying to go east or west from one side of the Interstate to the other. If the truck was on the Interstate and hit the cyclist on the frontage road the driver was seriously out of control of either the truck or himself.

A little closer and a lot less deadly is this wreck in Houston. Houston bicyclist seeks driver who fled after striking him Since the cyclist’s lighting or lack of was not mentioned in the article we have to assume the cyclist had at least a rear reflector, and most likely a good light, so that part of the protocols has been met. Not known if the driver was going slow enough to execute the “dive to the ditch” portion of the protocols, but getting the infrastructure right would definitely prevent a wreck like this.

Next up is a supposedly stop-sign running cyclist in Shreveport. Shreveport cyclist seriously injured when hit by car Looking at the Street View of the site this is a two-way stop with extremely limited sight lines but only a 25 MPH speed limit. Even so this is an area that would require extreme vigilance on the part of the cyclist to stay safe. Intersection protocols to the max here, and get the infrastructure right to prevent wrecks like this.

Update on that weird wreck in OR. Critically injured Portland cyclist expected to survive I don’t know how this one happened yet. The only picture I have access to does not show the damages visible in the only picture I have access to are completely at odds with the written description of the wreck.

A UK cyclist dodges a very big bullet. Cyclist speaks of moment he was hit by rolls of paper as lorry overturned on Chester Road Not anywhere close to a typical wreck, avoiding this one was a matter of pure luck.

The Big Story is a cyclist hit by a truck in Oz. Cyclist dies in truck collision also Man charged over double fatal Vic crash and even Cyclist killed in crash with truck Hit from behind but “Why?” is still not known with the driver of the weapon vehicle hanging around to talk with LEO. Infrastructure to prevent, that much is sure.

Anther wreck in Enn Zed. Cyclist knocked from bike Not much information forthcoming from LEO on this one. It looks like it might be a hit-from-behind or buzz job. The cyclist was reported to have been part of a group ride which makes anything resembling a SMIDSY (the UK, Oz and Enn Zed version of the blind driver) extremely unlikely.

Our first Infrastructure! link comes from Houston. Bicycle safety Houston has said that they want zero cyclists killed per year. That is an ambitious goal for a town that kills an average of 4 cyclists a year, with 3 of those being completely compliant with the law at the time of their deaths. That leaves 2 ways of reaching that goal, draconian driver enforcement, or Dutch-style infrastructure that completely removes cyclists from conflict points.

Even a scarlet state like OK can see the benefits of normalizing cycling as a mode of transportation. Cycling on the rise in downtown OKC; provides economic, traffic benefits And they still miss mentioning the health benefits.

Two links about dangerous infrastructure in the UK leading to a semi passing a cyclist at less than arm’s length. VIDEO: Cyclist posts HGV close-pass helmet cam footage to show driver ‘he could have been killed’ and Cyclist’s fury at HGV driver

This is as much crap drivers as it is bad infrastructure. VIDEO: Terrifying near misses for cyclist at Deptford ‘nightmare’ junction A near-constant stream of turning drivers repeatedly cut off the cyclists in the videos. The real “infrastructure” needed here is LEO capable of issuing tickets for failure to yield, or assault with a deadly weapon.

Still in the UK dealing with potentially deadly infrastructure we get this article full of possible triggers of anxiety. Injured cyclist calls for pothole repairs after serious accident That’s one seriously messed-up dude.

Ted was busy today with two links to show for it. Bypassing busy traffic on 7th Street, notes from the LAPD bike task force, and Beverly Hills bike lanes redux and A little light Morning Linkage for your Cesar Chavez Day

And those were all the links that gave me fits and giggles.

Whee! back to the grind, and the Feed

Activities at my church are ramping back up, and I will have fewer evenings free than I did over the winter. I see that as a good thing because I will have more interactions with human beings. They drive me crazy some times but not being around them is even worse. So, humans, can’t live with them, can’t live long without them.

Up first, remember back when I said a motor vehicle was the perfect murder weapon in Texas as long as you didn’t know the person you hit? This guy doesn’t read my blog. Cyclist Hit by Truck, Police Believe Incident Was Intentional Nothing on the mode but given the slight amount of injury the cyclist sustained I would say the assault was defused to a buzz job.

A person apparently driving a decommissioned cop car hit-and-run a cyclist. Tulsa Police: Vehicle That Hit Bicycle Rider Wasn’t Theirs The story was originally reported as an unmarked cop car doing the H&R, but the local PD did a check on their cars and announced it wasn’t one of theirs. The rest of the narrative has an intersection wreck that probably the cyclist had the right of way. Since they seem to be going out of their way to not blame the cyclist this is probably the truth of the matter. So this would be on the “unavoidable by human cyclists” list and as the cyclist had the right of way one that physical infrastructure would have little influence over as you sometimes have to cross streets in urban areas like this.

Two links from SC on a cyclist hit by a right-turning vehicle. Coroner identifies cyclist killed in collision with vehicle and Bicyclist killed Wednesday in collision with truck at Bluff Road and Rosewood Drive. I’m conflicted about this one, mainly because I’m getting conflicting reports about what happened. The official story is the cyclist was hit while riding salmon. But there is another report that the cyclist was coming out of the parking lot adjacent to the intersection and waiting for the light to cross the street to be on the right side of the road for her return trip. What this boils down to is single-mode infrastructure killing people not using that mode to access the infrastructure.

Hit-and-run in CA. Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crash outside Winters It appears to be another hit-from-behind wreck, so protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent. This wreck was on the Putah Creek TT course, so it’s conceivable the victim was practicing for the event planned for this weekend.

Also in CA is this additional link to the guilty no-contest plea of a cyclist-killing driver. Woman Pleads No Contest in Boyle Heights Cyclist Death My disgust at this “almost-human” prevents me from making any further comment.

Up the coast a bit from CA we get this wreck in America’s Copenhagen. Biker hurt after hitting car in NE Portland Since the wreck was described as an intersection wreck and they are not blaming the cyclist for running a red it would appear the driver ran the red on this one. Again intersection wreck, use the protocols to avoid. And we get more information from another source local to the wreck Collision at Killingsworth and Cully injures man on bike – UPDATED Something bothering me with this new information is the possibility of the cyclist being involved in a pinball wreck, as the ball, getting bounced from one vehicle to another. Cyclist making a left turn gets in the turn lane, driver takes umbrage at the cyclist not being in the bike lane and moves into the cyclist and the now out-of-control ballistic mess that is the cyclist hits the vehicle in the cross street. Of course the wreck did not happen in TX but I have been “herded” by drivers who didn’t think I belonged in the turn lane. his could have just been a slightly more violent version of that.

A report on a NJ cyclist killer shows he is a murderous b*****d. Man facing trial for killing cyclist in hit-and-run is now charged with beating a Rutgers university student to death And no you’re not seeing things, this is a UK media outlet making the report. And I had almost forgotten about this wreck that seemed like it was deliberate back when it happened, now I am even more convinced that this wretched excuse for a human being crossed the lane on purpose. He is a serial killer whose first taste of murder didn’t satisfy.

From Oz, Don’t Hit The Pedestrians! even when they walk right in front of you in the bike lane. Cyclist knocks pedestrian unconscious Cyclist riding past a transit stop, pedestrian steps off the curb into the bike lane right in front of him, then things get fuzzy because the pedestrian doesn’t remember anything between that and waking up surrounded by people trying to help him. At this point we still don’t have the cyclist’s side of the story. But seriously if you hit a pedestrian stay with them until medical help arrives or they walk off on their own.

A teen cyclist is left-hooked in Enn Zed. Teen cyclist injured in Tauranga You would think that all the vehicles that were passing would belie the “high speed” statement from the previous part of the sentence… and that if he was going all that fast drivers would have noticed him to the left before making the left turn. Anyway intersection protocols to avoid or to mitigate damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

Your daily Ted ;) Morning Links: More on MyFig, way too much bad news from upstate, and don’t deal dope from a lightless bike

Infrastructure! news from NYC. NYPD: 914 Pedestrians and Cyclists Injured, Nine Killed in Traffic in February Vision Zero my skinny backside!

And in Oz their latest bit of bike infrastructure was apparently done by a pre-schooler in crayon. Cyclists claim a redesigned intersection in South Brisbane is an accident waiting to happen A bike lane that dead ends in a pedestrian-only space is the least of the problems with this fuster-cluck.

And those were all the links that gave me fits and giggles today. Except the one about the motorcyclist that died because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, I figured your heads would asplode if you tried to read that one before they fixed it and it wouldn’t make any sense to link it after they fixed it.

Another grocery day, another Feed

Yep, time to hit the neighborhood supermarket again to replenish the produce and bread. The milk we bought last week went bad before we could open it so we absolutely have to buy more today, those artificial creamers are just nasty IMHO. Also looking to get more salty snacks. I don’t know why but my cookie cravings went “Meh!” and my tortilla chip and pork skins cravings went through the roof over the winter. My BP is staying low so I’m not overloading on salt, and as frequently as I can I swap regular salt out in favor of a 50% Potassium Chloride blend to get my potassium levels up. It’s a mystery why my cravings change from sweet to salt and back again…

Our first wreck report is from Enn Zed. Cyclist seriously injured in crash The cause in this case appears to be the tourist not being used to driving on the wrong side of the road and looking in the wrong places. I don’t know what to tell you about avoiding that one except the damage looks like it was a broadside impact to the cyclist so probably intersection protocols to avoid and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

Still in Enn Zed we get a victim blamer. Teen injured in collision The very first paragraph of the article blames the cyclist for not wearing hi-viz instead of the driver for not watching where he was going. “Police are pleading with cyclists to wear high visibility clothing after a teenage cyclist and a car collided on Courtney Road this morning.” The article goes on to say the cyclist was hit by a vehicle making a turning movement that hit the cyclist going straight. Intersection protocols to avoid or to minimize damages, and get the infrastructure right so what clothes a cyclist wears will have nothing to do with safety.

The civil suit goes on without the criminal conviction as that case has yet to be tried. Family of dead cyclist sues alleged drunken motorist Both parties to this wreck were in Marketing, the victim at Groupon, and the driver at AllYouCanDrink.com. Somehow I think that company name is going to be a big factor in this case.

A PA cyclist is laid to rest after he was killed on his bike. David Ray Wilson This was the wreck in question Bicyclist struck, killed in Monroe Township I find it interesting that the family picture at the top of the announcement had two ferrets featured prominently.

The BESTEST infrastructure news all MONTH!!!1!!!one!! State Senate approves Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act This bill recognizes that leaving people to die on the roads might actually cause them to die, or to have a worse outcome with long-term disability than if the driver remains at the scene and calls 911. If this bill becomes law it eliminates most of the incentive for DUI drivers to flee the scene as the minimum sentences for both crimes would be the same and prosecutors would not have to prove DUI to put you away for a very long time. The possibility of the driver being drunk would never have to be brought up at the trial.

What is your riding style? Ray Keener: Take the Lane? Share the Road? I’m of the opinion that I share the road, not the lane unless there is at least 14 feet of clear pavement between the lane marker and the edge of the road. In that case it’s a matter of trash on the road and crumbling road patches that determines if I share the lane. If there are a lot of either then I take the lane to make avoiding the bad places easier.

An “informed” opinion about bicycle infrastructure. Bike lanes a really dumb idea I like the reply under the article…

Another long day, and the Feed

I just got back from a trip to the chiropractor with the usual drama and adventure that entails these days (but I’m getting better, so from my perspective this is worth it). Once again transportation was the issue, with the “check engine” light coming on for no apparent reason. All fluids were checked and found within limits and the temp gauge was also within limits, so lacking a code scanner we had nothing to base a diagnosis on and continued despite the light.

Up first is another wreck in what used to be the most deadly state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Tallahassee Cyclist Hit by Car, Taken to Hospital The narrative had the cyclist running a red light, and the wreckage is certainly consistent with a cyclist getting hit broadside. Intersection protocols to avoid, and infrastructure to prevent. If the cyclist really did run a red and was not just caught by a stale green then one thing I would suggest is placing bicycle signals down where a cyclist could actually see them instead of 20 feet above the intersection where a road cyclist couldn’t get their neck to bend that far to be able to see it.

More about that fatal OH wreck that killed a randoneur. Veteran cyclist killed by minivan knew the dangers all too well At this point I think they should be charging the driver with murder for hitting a conspicuous cyclist on the shoulder of the road with nothing to interfere with his vision. The driver should be proving he didn’t hit the cyclist on purpose when all he had to do to not hit him was to stay on the road on a straight stretch of road with no particular amount of hill.

Also in OH the final word on a bike wreck. Doctor gets 15 days in jail for driving drunk, hitting cyclist I think the word in this case is “F-U”.

Our first Infrastructure! article is from down the road a piece in Houston. Bike safety plan aims to eliminate fatalities I think that in order to eliminate fatalities hey are going to have to eliminate the cause of fatalities, idiots driving cars. Even the LEO with one of the worst windshield biases in the US admit that almost all of the fatal bicycle wrecks involve drivers that are distracted, drunk, asleep, or all of the above, in control of deadly weapons. How to keep the twain apart so that DDA(aota) drivers are physically unable to interact with squishy people riding bicycles will be the defining aspect of the program if they are really committed to the Vision Zero aspect.

Bike rider badly injured after crashing at problem corner on busy Brisbane road And to the internet toughs calling the cyclist a bad rider for not avoiding the problem, the symbol covers the entire width of the lane and cars encroach on what little lane there is, making dodging the slick spot a case of Russian Roulette. The video shows the actual site of the wreck with the eroded stripe and the bicycle symbol in the apex of the turn near the end of the video.
