Strange news from the hormone fronts, and the Feed

I got some good news from the LRK about my testosterone levels. Since they had to adjust my BP meds as the result of one of the previous suppliers dropping out my testosterone levels had to be tested before my prescription for HRT could be renewed after the last time it ran out. I ran out about 3 weeks prior to my visit, so supposedly whatever my levels were would be reasonably similar to what they would be completely without HRT, and the test results were, incredibly, slightly lower than normal. That is much higher than expected after being on HRT for close to two years, which should have resulted in zero testosterone. But my healing ability seems to have kicked in and caused my hormone levels to be in the normal range for a man of my age not taking testosterone antagonists. The doctor is at a loss to explain this beyond my previously demonstrated ability to heal from injury and illness… Now all I need to do is wait on the PCP assigned by my Obamacare provider to give me a referral to a surgeon to take this lump off the back of my neck so I can get back on a bike and be able to see where I’m going. The word from the PCP is he will be taking more new patients after January 1. I have put in a request for an appointment ASAP.

Up first is a legal infrastructure report from Houston. Trial begins in cyclist’s hit-and-run death Notice the “rapist’s defence” blaming the victim for the clothing she was wearing. This has got to stop, the driver did not hit-and-run because the cyclist was wearing dark clothing, the driver hit-and-ran because the driver had no morals and left the victim to die in the street. The clothing the victim was wearing should have no more to do with that than the clothing of a rape victim.

And if it hadn’t been for the TX trial this would have been my leadoff link. Cy Vance Files Homicide Charge in Lower East Side Pedestrian Death This is noteworthy for two reasons, the first being that filing criminal charges in motor vehicle deaths is rare to the point of being mythical in NYS, there being only 2 such charges in more than 150 pedestrian deaths in 2013. The second reason is charges were filed so quickly in the process and there were no aggravating circumstance like DUI, while the victim was a homeless man staying in a shelter nearby.

Another jurisdiction lowers the speed limit on bicycles on an MUP lower than the speed limit for motor vehicles in a school zone. 83-year-old killed by cyclist prompted speed limit drop on Washington trail, website reported Still trying to find out if the speed in school zones is higher than the 15 MPH speed limit for bicycles on the MUP. I’m betting it is 5 MPH faster.

Moving to CA LEO are using some sense in handing out tickets for bicycle safety. Santa Monica Police Take Steps to Curb Bicycle AccidentsSpecial attention will be directed toward drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in cross walks and similar dangerous violations.” IOW all the things that get people on foot or riding bicycles killed or injured.

A similar campaign to the CA ticket blitz in Oz. Police blitz Sydney Rd cyclists in Brunswick And predictably, they are targeting the victims instead of the people doing the killing, like the woman wearing the helmet improperly. Wearing a helmet has never caused nor prevented a wreck, helmets are post-wreck injury factors.

Still in Oz, a serious fine for a serious offense. Motorist Paul Faulkner convicted and fined $1200 over cyclist who hit car door and later died

If there is any doubt that people’s lives are secondary to corporate profits… Lorry safety change faces 10-year delay I have a compromise: Let the manufacturers have their delay of safety regulations, on the provision that any cyclists killed or injured by trucks made during the delay are compensated 100% for medical bills, lifetime lost income, and pain and suffering, or their heirs. Sure you can delay meeting safety regulations, so long as they pay for the damages caused by not meeting those regulations.

And those were all the links I could scrape up today.

Well, it isn’t an infection, and the Feed

I don’t know exactly what is making me sick, but I’m pretty sure that I don’t have an upper respiratory infection (yet). So far everything coming out of my nose is water-clear, and depending on my hydration it has about the same viscosity as water. So, no infection, but not sure exactly what it is. I just know that when I take allergy medicine it doesn’t help much. A little, but not much. It slows down the drip but does nada for the aches and pains. I don’t quite feel like I was hit by a truck this time, but maybe a motorcycle? Lots of aches and pains there…

NYC has a massive infrastructure problem, but nobody wants to admit it. NYPD: 1,399 Pedestrians and Cyclists Injured, 16 Killed in Traffic in October 1415 dead and injured people in 31 days tells me that the infrastructure is not optimized for anything but motor vehicles and that mode is not really optimized. The 15 dead pedestrians are almost twice the number killed by bicycles in NYC since 2001. Stop and think about that for a moment. Motor vehicles have killed almost twice as many people in 31 days as bicycles in 15 years. And yet people keep insisting the bicycles are the problem?

Still in NYC they deal with the lack of space for bicycles and pedestrians by permanently making 2/3 of the roads permanently off-limits to anything except cars? Eyes on the Street: The Part of Central Park That’s Only for Cars Yep, they be nucking futs.

And just how nucking futs are they? For Traffic Violence Victims, Cy Vance’s “Moneyball” Still a Field of Dreams Yep, really nucking futs.

And from CA why we have so many hit-and-runs against cyclists. Hit a cyclist, help a cyclist? These readers aren’t so sure Yep, hit ‘em and leave ‘em in the street to die because you saw a cyclist riding salmon once, or running a stop sign (nevermind that everybody runs stop signs in CA hence the sobriquet “California Stop” applied to slowing to bicycle pace and rolling the stop sign if it is clear), or riding in the middle of the lane…

More of the same from 3/4 of the way across the country. Bikers vs. Drivers: Chattanooga is ‘bike-friendly’, but there is tension between cyclists, drivers Yep, forcing a driver to lift his foot off the gas for a few seconds is a death penalty offense. Enforcible immediately upon slowing the driver down. The graphic that goes with the article is really scary. I hope they got the ISP addresses of all those threatening comments, because if one of those dudes hits a cyclist it will prove premeditation.

I have to waddle to the phone store, and the Feed

As I said in the headline, I need to go to the phone store in the strip mall down the street and buy a phone card to recharge my minutes. I don’t know if I have related this before, but my phone plan has an outrageous amount of minutes for a decent price, enough minutes that I could spend 8 hours a day on the phone every day for 30 days and still have 10 more hours to burn, all for $30 plus tax. This meets my needs perfectly with the phone I have, there is no way I could possibly spend that much time talking on the phone, even with my headset. I spend most of my time on the laptop anyway…

The “waddle” part of the headline is because I ate too much yesterday/last night. I woke up still bloated from all the food yesterday. It is a good thing I don’t eat like that every day, because I would look like a blimp… Throw a grey T-shirt on me with “Goodyear” down the side and …

OK I’m back from all the stores, I went across the street first to pay my Obamacare premium, then over to buy a bus pass and a top up card for my phone at the same store, then I dropped by the nail spa and paid the tip I couldn’t pay when I got my toes done Monday because “someone” had swapped a five for a ten in my toe money…

Sanity level approaching 1, and the Feed

OK some explanation for the headline. One of the games I play in has a Sanity stat for both the character and the encounter. Levels of Sanity are 0-2 with 1 being “Normal” and levels less than .5 or greater than 1.5 being “Insane”. Interestingly enough when characters of 0.5 or below have an encounter of 1.5 or above, to the outside observer everything looks quite calm and collected. Yes it’s one of Those games, where half the combat takes place in the characters’ minds. And it’s a great deal of fun to play, although I imagine actually living in that reality would be a close approximation of Dante’s Inferno. As this applies to my home though since certain people went back to work the levels of hostility have plummeted because the main combatant is simply not there to antagonize people. Interestingly enough this is also one way to cause Sanity to return to 1 in the game play, by simply removing one of the combatants from play. Let’s see how this works out long term, because this experiment will end 2015/4/30 as we shut down the shared housing for Mrs. the Poet’s sanity (non-capitalized).

Up first a story we have been following for several months here at WoaB. Injured cyclist walks months after being hit by a truck I’m wishing this cyclist the very best and a speedy recovery.

A BOLO for my OR readers. Witness photographs hit-and-run driver fleeing The driver was a male caucasian 20-30 YO with a slim build (caution, excessive levels of snark may be present) driving a dark penis-extender with 4 wheels. There seemed to be some kind of decal adorning the back window that is common among penis-extender drivers. This driver is assumed armed with a WMD, approach with caution if required to verify identity.

For some drivers, being in control of a WMD isn’t enough to threaten cyclists. SUV nearly hits five cyclists, driver pulls out gun Cheesus, you are already using a WMD to threaten and harass cyclists, you have superior speed to escape with, and you still feel the need to pull a pistol out? [insert slightly homophobic/misogynist comparison here]

It has been an exhausting day, and now I have to do a blog post

I have been walking about 5 miles today doing shopping getting ready for my semi-annual camping trip and I’m still not done, and I’m filtering the links to post for the blog tonight. My feet and legs are killing me… I had to buy a new tent for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is Mrs. the Poet wants to come happynakedpagan camping with me, and my little tent will not support sleeping 2 adults unless they can manage to spend the night in the same sleeping bag, and my surplus Dutch Army mummy bag can barely fit around me. The bag is late ’60s to early ’70s issue and while there is adequate length (the Dutch were tall even then) those bike-riding commies were on the skinny side. Anywho my air mattress completely fills the floor of the tent and usually the morning after the second night I’m trapped in my tent because I can’t sit up or roll over because there is just enough air left in the mattress to push down and have something other than what I was trying to push up go up. The usual thing is I try to push my upper body up and instead my feet get higher. I could just do a log roll out of the mattress except then I run into the sides of the tent. What usually ends up happening is I ask someone to pull the plug on the mattress so I can roll over and sit up and get out of the tent. The new tent has a bit more room than that, roughly 5 times more room. The new tent can put 2 queen-size air mattresses in and leave room to stand in the middle, and I do mean stand in the middle. My old tent is barely tall enough to sit up on the air mattress without hitting my head on the inside top.

Up first because it’s close and also the Big Story is an Austin report of a cyclist dying after getting punched in the head while riding. Man faces assault charge after punching cyclist also Man arrested after punching, killing bicyclist in northeast Austin and Man Charged With Assault On Austin Cyclist I’m not sure why this obvious murder under TX laws was so undercharged. In TX if someone dies in the commission of a felony (and strongarm robbery is most definitely a felony) it’s not just murder, it’s capital murder that qualifies for the death penalty. As for avoiding, the perp walked up to a cyclist riding slow and sucker punched him. I don’t know of any way to avoid that short of wearing a full-face helmet with a shield. Infrastructure doesn’t help against this kind of thing either.

Moving a bit further south a drunk driver gets 90% of a maximum sentence for killing a cyclist. Driver who killed bicyclist sentenced to 18 years and the UK reaction 18 years for Texas drunk driver who killed cyclist then tried to hide body They forgot to charge him with felony littering for dumping the body in a ditch after the cyclist died in the bed of the truck.

A CA cyclist gets hurt in a wreck. Castro Valley: Cyclist seriously injured in collision with car No mode given, LEO were still sitting on this one as of the posting of the link.

More on a SoCal wreck. Authorities ID cyclist killed in Midway District crash I really think the victim’s criminal history was not pertinent to the wreck.

The most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike gets even deadliest-er. Bradenton cyclist Michael DiLandro succumbs to injuries from Sunday car collision I want everyone to know that the introductory sentence to this paragraph is meant to convey my disgust at the body count in FL, not because I forgot how to compose a sentence. Anyway, hit-from-behind wreck, and I’m not sure the driver should have even been on the road. There was a total of 4 minors in the car, 2 teens, a toddler and an infant. Protocols for what good they might have done, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

More on that NC wreck that seems to be caused as much by bad infrastructure as the driver crossing the bike path in reverse. Cyclist killed in accident lived active, friendly life Digging down deep in the article we find the sidewalk where the cyclist was hit was actually a designated extension of the MUP, but you would have to look it up on a map because it wasn’t signed or anything to notify drivers that cyclists could be riding on it at bike speeds. And what driver is going to look up where the bicycle facilities are? Definitely bad infrastructure.

Update on a NY hit-and-run. Police release photo of truck involved in hit-run of cyclist in Holbrook Hit-from-behind so protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and fix the dang infrastructure so cyclists and big trucks don’t mix outside of low-speed residential areas.

Another truck-involved hit-and-run this time in IL. TRUCK DRIVER SOUGHT IN MCKINLEY PARK HIT-AND-RUN, CYCLIST IN CRITICAL CONDITION Nothing on the mode, but the fact that the cyclist was still alive after getting hit with a semi is nothing short of a miracle in and of itself.

Update on an AK wreck. Video a chilling reminder of multiple dangers facing pedestrians, cyclists The video shows the cyclist entering the intersection legally, getting delayed, and then getting killed.

OK, this is Sunday as I type this, there was a technical issue with my internet access Saturday after I ran out of sleep Friday night/Saturday morning and I just got back on line a little while ago. The lack of sleep issue pursued me all day and into the night Saturday and I didn’t get to sleep until early Sunday morning and I still haven’t recovered from the deficit. But recovered or not I still have to be upright (more or less) so I put the ending on this post. As you can probably tell from the construction of this paragraph, I need to get to bed early tonight to recover fully. Brain not work good.

So how do you pronounce “Francis/es” anyway, and the Feed

Short answer to the question posed by the headline, two syllables with the second syllable vowel sound a schwa (ə) or fran’ səs. Since Francis/es has expressed no gender, or much of any personality traits aside from a tendency to go in a different direction than expected at startup, I will not assign gender to it. I mean I know it’s a truck, made for carrying loads, but I detect no masculine tendencies nor feminine ones either for that matter. Sure Gigi was like a 9YO girl who swore like a sailor, and Blue was like an eager puppy, and Stratus was like Eeyore except not as talkative, but each of those bikes was either old or abandoned or both. Francis/es is for all intents and purposes a brand new bike and hasn’t had the time to develop a personality yet. There’s no “magic” there yet aside from the stubborness.

On another front, I’m having a small problem with the interior diagonal for the passenger compartment of the Sprint T. To get maximum torsional stiffness I need to run the diagonal from the top of the rear hoop to the bottom of the front hoop or vice-versa. Since the front-to-back diagonal will have to run through the side of the body to get to the base of the rear hoop that only leaves the rear-to-front as a viable alternative. And even that has its difficulties, because that diagonal would have to meet the bottom of the front hoop just to the left of my left foot in this picture:
inside view with legs
And as you can see, it’s already pretty crowded there.

Up first, we finally have a clear picture of the jihadist squirrel that suicide attacked a CA cyclist. Cyclist recalls being ‘torpedoed’ by squirrel I would say that fork definitively passed the “squirrel test”.

Still in CA we get a Ted Rogers report on a red-light running cyclist. Alleged red light running cyclist killed in San Diego; first bicycling death in city this year and Cyclist killed in Midway District collision As Ted reported local cyclists say the signal does not detect the presence of a cyclist and does not change when one is there, which kind of conditions cyclists to run that particular light in particular and traffic signals in general. Intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Moving up the coast a tiny bit (by TX standards). Cyclist seriously injured in crash with car on PCH in Long Beach Not much to go on with this one, I think because that new passing law makes hitting a cyclist from behind an automatic ticket and if the ticket isn’t acknowledged publically there will be outrage from cyclists and drivers. But since there was no intersection given it is pretty much certain that this was a hit-from-behind wreck. Protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get that infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Still in CA but in the northern half of the state. Police: Napa cyclist hit by pickup, seriously injured Looking at the Street View of the scene we see a T intersection with 6½ lanes and no sensor in the bike lane to trigger the signal. This configuration all but demands that cyclists run the red when there is no motor vehicle traffic to trigger the signal unless that camera can detect a bike in the bike lane (if you move on step closer to the intersection than the link I picked you can see the camera). Depending on the cycle time for the light a cyclist could leave on the green and still be in the intersection when the light phase turned green for the other direction. Not knowing the timing of the light phases I can’t say precisely what happened here, but I do know that getting that infrastructure “up to Dutch” would prevent future wrecks.

Two guys riding one bike in GA are hit, one dead, one injured. Bicyclist hit and killed by car in DeKalb County Note that this is a secondary wreck induced by bad infrastructure after the actual cyclist lost control of the bike in limited visibility. The only way to avoid this wreck was to not have the first wreck that caused the cyclist to go onto the road in front of the weapon vehicle. The way to prevent a future wreck is to get that infrastructure “up to Dutch” so that a bicycle wreck doesn’t turn into a car wreck.

Breakthrough in a FL hit-and-run. Possible vehicle in cyclist hit-and-run recovered This was a hit-from-behind of a cyclist riding in the bike lane. I hope they throw the entire law library at this fool because what happened was in front of dozens of witnesses.

More on a MI wreck. Police identify bicyclist killed in early morning crash as Hudsonville man, 54 Cyclist now definitively was lighted beyond legal minimums when hit from behind by a literrally blind driver (oncoming headlights!). Not much the cyclist could have done to avoid this one as the wreck took place just before a merge from 3 lanes in each direction to 2 and a cyclist would need to be where he was hit to prevent motor vehicles from forcing him off the road. Still would require Dutch-quality infrastructure to prevent.

A wreck in far West Canuckistan. Cyclist injured in collision with car on Island Highway Still trying to figure this one out. They were both at fault? How does that happen?Get that infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

More on the bike/ped wreck in West Canuckistan. Cyclist’s speed not a factor in Stanley Park crash that killed Chinese tourist Outside witnesses have come forward with statements that the pedestrian stepped out right in front of the cyclist leaving no time to react or avoid the wreck.

This is a scary wreck in Oz. Dashcam video: Young girl cyclist in head-on holiday park crash with car (but gets up and walks away) This demonstrates what getting infrastructure “up to Dutch” looks like in a wreck. In the Netherlands this would be exactly the same as it is in the video, shared space with an extremely low motor vehicle speed limit, and you see the outcome. Nothing! the kid gets up and walks away from the wreck unharmed except for needing a change of pants and underwear.

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: Automakers build in deadly distractions; CD15’s Buscaino multi-modals his way to work

Infrastructure! news from CA. Injured midtown resident challenges Sacramento law allowing sidewalk cycling I actually see this as a positive for cycling if this suit is allowed to continue, as cyclists would then be allowed to sue for the state allowing cars to take over the streets and roads without designing the infrastructure for all users.

A little whimsical infrastructure from West Canuckistan. Vancouver to remove mysterious unicycle markings on bike lanes Turns out unicycles are already legal in Canuckstani bike lanes, no additional signage needed.

Are you still paranoid when they really are out to get you? Cyclists: Motorists See You as Moving Targets The scary thing is a cyclist will get passed by hundreds of cars during a long trip, if only 0.01% of them have socio- or psycopathic drivers that could mean you’re life is in peril 2 or 3 times a day.

And those were all the bicycle-related links I could find for today. I have some on-deck for tomorrow…

This post will be published late, and the Feed

I know this post will go up late because as soon as I finish the opening paragraph I’m headed to the laundromat with a dirty comforter that won’t fit in our washer or dryer. Mrs. the Poet said that because it was my glass of tea that spilled on the comforter I’m the one that gets to schlep it down to the laundromat and sit with it until it’s dry and ready to take home. I had to delay doing that for a bit because we had a literal frog-strangler of a rain this AM that left the roads flooded making riding a cargo bike with a comforter on the bed Not A Good Thing, and the roads are just now dry enough to ride on.

OK I’m back, and good News Everybody! The super secret job I work at that I would have to kill you before I told you about it has given me a promotion and a raise. This means I will be getting a few more $ per month than I was getting before.

Up first is a hit-and-run from the home of the Hotter’n’Hell Hundred. Cyclist critically injured in hit-and-run No mode given but with the levels of damage discussed in the article the speed was on the high side (right front, fender, windshield and roof). Since mode wasn’t given and I couldn’t pull up a Google Street View because of all the tabs I had open basically shutting my laptop down, I can’t even say if this is a wreck that could be prevented with changes to the physical infrastructure.

Cyclist in NYC runs into cop wandering in the bike lane, no criminality suspected (yay!). Cop injured on Brooklyn Bridge as cyclist hits officer on footpath and Cyclist Injures Cop On Brooklyn Bridge, No Criminality Suspected That “footpath” is technically shared use with a paint stripe separating pedestrians from cyclists. And for once it’s a good thing that they are treating the cyclist the same as they do a driver, because this is exactly what happens to drivers who don’t leave the scene and are not chemically impaired at the time of the wreck. Nothing, a big fat “no criminality suspected” with not so much as a ticket even in the case of a fatality. But for our purposes, moderate your speed in areas of heavy pedestrian traffic, and don’t hit the pedestrians! Final comment on the wreck from the first link: “this is a real tragedy. that’s his doughnut eating arm!

Moving to CA there has been an arrest in a hit-and-run. Another dead pedestrian, this time in far West Canuckistan. Stanley Park pedestrian, 71, dies after being hit by cyclist also STANLEY PARK PEDESTRIAN DIES FROM INJURIES AFTER BEING HIT BY CYCLIST I wish I knew how to prevent bike/ped wrecks. I’m not sure about this one other than the collision was in the road and not in a crosswalk. There may be an infrastructure solution, but I have serious doubts about that. The only group of road users less predictable than cyclists is pedestrians.
