Clearing out some links before going away, and the Feed

Since I have a few hours to kill before I have to leave I’m composing a post. And that’s an interesting verb to use, “composing”. I would say writing, but in my mind that is putting words on paper, and this process normally never gets any closer to paper than the tissue I use to blow my nose during allergy season. And when a newspaper page is assembled with all the blocks of text and pictures that is called composing a page, so I amalgamated the placing blocks of text in a page and never getting on paper to make the process of creating a blog page also “composing”.

There really were not many links to choose from this morning even using the extended version of the Feed. Ironically this leads to making choosing the critical first links even harder. I think I’ll run with more on the two cyclists getting hit from behind in NOLA. Ironman triathlete killed in New Orleans East accident and Cyclist killed in N.O. East was Atlanta firefighter training for Ironman Broad daylight in a straight road with little traffic and more than one lane of travel in the direction the cyclists were hit from behind, or IOW absolutely no reason to not change lanes to not hit the cyclists. But for some reason NOLA LEO are not coming up with reasons to charge the driver. As I pointed out last week, protocols to avoid and infrastructure to prevent.

Another link to the NYC hit and literal run as in abandon disabled vehicle and depart on foot. BICYCLIST DIES IN HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT ON BROADWAY AND HALSEY Again not a wreck a human cyclist could avoid, and infrastructure would have been just another thing for the driver to ignore.

A wreck in PA. Police: Van drives off after hitting pedestrian in Silver Spring Intersection wreck, protocols to avoid and infrastructure to prevent.

A SoCal driver hits a cyclist with his car deliberately and I’m not complaining about it. Other news we had a freeze in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell… Man with Hatchet, Gun Attacks Clerk at Market To avoid a wreck like this don’t ride a bike to knock off a C-store or any other kind of store. For those who follow that particular deity that violates rules 8 and 9. Stealing and coveting others’ things.

Infrastructure! news from MO and this one ain’t good. Bicycle Ban Bill: Will Missouri Lawmakers Prohibit Cycling on Some State Roads? I could support a bill like this with a much lower limit of 100 yards and a concurrent ban of cars on roads without bike paths nearby and a freeway less than 2 miles away unless point of origin or destination are on that road or are part of the most direct route to origin and destination. As the bill is now it is much too vague to enforce, and would be used as an excuse to exclude bikes from all roads by LEO.

NYC DOT has studied the Prospect Park bike lanes and found that they do not cause rush hour congestion, they just slow traffic to non-lethal speeds. Data: Prospect Park West Bike Lane Doesn’t Impede Traffic Flow This will cause the people on continuous lawsuit mode over the bike lanes to claim “cooking the data”.

Infrastructure news from Oz. Bikes to squeeze out cars in $500 million tower on the IMAX theatre site at Darling Harbour I’m still trying to wrap my head around the logistics of this one. They are stating that this project will hire 4000 people, but they are providing parking for 332 bicycles, 86 cars and 5 motorcycles, and this will be a site that attracts thousands of people each day as customers who are served by 56 bike spots, and competing for the car and motorcycle spots with the employees. This location must have INCREDIBLE transit facilities access.

Ain’t life Grand, and the Feed

Got a letter today from the ACA people, partially explaining why Mrs. the Poet was shown on the policy they sent last week. Seems that since we file joint taxes they had her SS on file linked to mine, and also knew her insurance because it was from the same company as the policy I got and put Mrs. the Poet on my policy because it had better coverage at lower cost. If I’m reading this right we are both getting insured with more coverage at a lower cost than what Mrs. the Poet was paying for just her. Whoever negotiated the policy at the school district needs to get fired. I mean I saw the doc they gave Mrs. the Poet showing how much the school district was paying and how much she was paying and all the coverages, and her policy was almost twice as much as my policy with four times the deductible and total out-of-pocket and a smaller network and less covered treatments. So, Thank You Obamacare?

Up first is another cyclist who was collateral damage in a multi-vehicle wreck. Cyclist Killed By Hit & Run BMW Driver In Bushwick and Video: BMW Driver Who Killed Cyclist In Bushwick Still At Large Again there was nothing the cyclist could do to avoid this, and since the driver tried to get away by driving salmon on a one-way street infrastructure would not have prevented it either.

More on that FL cyclist hit from behind in the bike lane. Deputies identify West Boca cyclist killed Wednesday morning Cyclist still had only a limited choice of avoiding this wreck by having a different wreck from hitting the curb, and American-style bike infrastructure failed miserably. That leaves only getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to avoid or prevent this wreck. And I really have no idea what to do about the real cause of this wreck, a driver that could not see out of the right side of the vehicle because it was so big and she was so short. I mean seriously, the driver could barely peer over the bottom of the window of the small sedan that cam to take her away from the scene after the weapon vehicle was impounded. How could she possibly see out the passenger side of the “mini” van she was driving. The only difference between that “mini” van and a regular full sized “van” is the “mini” has FWD and unibody construction based on passenger car mechanicals, and a “van” is body-on-frame with truck-based mechanicals. Size wise they are nearly identical.

Still in the most deadliest state to walk or ride a bike we get graphic illustration of the destructive power of motor vehicles. Authorities issue arrest warrant in deadly Florida day care center crash Note that there were no bicycles involved in this wreck and I still don’t know why it got put in the “cyclist killed” subfolder of my Feed folder. Still it does point out what I frequently say about motor vehicles being killing machines we use to get around. And I like cars! Used to hold an SCCA license, ISCA exhibitor card, and drive a stock car racer. Not all in the same year, but all in the same lifetime.

Similar story from NYC, a little later in the process. Drunk Driver Who Killed Brooklyn Pedestrian Gets No Jail Time, $500 Fine Even drunk drivers get a pass if there is any doubt about the ability of a sober driver to avoid the wreck. I would say since the sober driver in front of him managed to avoid the wreck he certainly could have, but then I’m a writer and trained as an engineer, I understand logic. Lawyers and people on juries not so much.

Sad news via Ted Rogers’ BikingInLA. Breaking news: San Marcos bike rider killed by cement truck Possible right hook based on location of weapon and victim vehicles, but really nothing at this point. Infrastructure that keeps concrete mixer trucks away from cyclists and pedestrians to prevent.

More on that hit-and-run in Canuckistan over the weekend. Cyclist injured in weekend hit and runA cyclist was transported to the hospital April 6 after getting smoked by a 4-door teal car.” Interesting choice of words for the opening sentence.

End of the process for getting justice for a UK cyclist. Coventry road race drivers jailed after one hit and seriously injured cyclist Nothing the cyclist could have done to get out of the way from these killer drivers, the bike was reduced to rubble without a single salvageable part. I have never seen a bike destroyed as thoroughly as that one. As the wreck was in an intersection and a red light was run I don’t see how even getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” could prevent this wreck unless it was an area that would permit a bicycle underpass to segregate cyclists in both time and space away from motor vehicles.

A wreck in Oz. Cyclist injured in crash involving car on roundabout Roundabouts are very bad infrastructure without a bicycle bypass system. They work great for cars and other larger motor vehicles, not so good for bicycles and motorcycles.

Mrs. the Poet was sent home from work, and the Feed

I’m sure some of you are expecting something really juicy and scandalous here, but the truth of the matter is Mrs. the Poet has some kind of upper respiratory bug and she got sent home so she didn’t give it to thousands of school kids with their lunches. So it’s a case of preventing “You wanna side of crud with your mystery meat, because you get one anyway.” I am immune of course, probably because I have upper respiratory allergies. Since my immune system is already fighting imaginary battles with live ammunition against pollen actual pathogens are destroyed long before they can cause damage. That’s the good part, the bad part being I feel almost as bad with allergies as I would getting sick except without the fever.

Before I get to the bike links I want to share from one of the online news outlets I sometimes get bike links from to show what I have to wade through to get you your bike news. ‘Star Trek’s Kate Mulgrew on geocentrist film: ‘I was a voice for hire, and a misinformed one’ and Pat Robertson asks God to ‘deliver us from this president’ I can see something like that happening just from what little experience I had as a voice-over actor. They only give you your lines to read for these gigs and never let you see the rest of the script. Of course I was voicing funny animals on a cartoon, not reading for a “science” documentary. But back to the point, I wade through hundreds of pages with this kind of stuff on them in headline form to find maybe one or two links a year, because links from outlets like this don’t show in my Feed. And people wonder why I get a little crazy every now and then?

Up first in bike reporting is a hit-from-behind wreck in the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Bicyclist struck and killed in suburban Boca Raton Uhh, what happened?… FL LEO: “We don’t know. It is a strange and perplexing thing that his man is dead and his bike is all trashed and that car has a huge dent in the right front corner. We just do not understand what could have taken place here.” Really?!?! The guy was hit from behind in the bike lane and they can’t figure out what happened? You can see the skid mark where the guy was hit in the video about 6″ to the left of the stripe, between the stripe and the garbage next to the curb. Don’t confuse that with the shadow from the overhead power lines in a similar location. Hit-from-behind protocols might have avoided death or serious injury (there would have been some injury from hitting the curb) and getting the infrastructure right (including keeping tiny old ladies out of very large vehicles) to prevent. And before anyone makes a comment, the driver was shown barely clearing the side windows of a small sedan, there’s no way she could see over the passenger side of the windshield of that full-size “mini” van.

LEO in a different part of the country see things a bit differently. Police: Driver who killed Seattle cyclist may have been chatting Driver hit cyclist at 73 MPH in a 45 zone passing on the right, why do they need to add “chatting on the phone” to the list of transgressions to make a homicide case out of it? The cyclist had no chance to avoid this wreck because his view of the weapon vehicle would have been blocked by the semi that was legally passing him, until the last second before he was hit. Infrastructure would not have helped because the driver of the weapon vehicle was not using the built environment as it was intended, so unless there was a big curb between the bike path and the motor lanes he would have been hit anyway.

A bit south video from the on-board camera was the key in breaking a bus wreck that hit 3 cyclists, and killed one of them. Cyclist Hit by North County Bus Reaches Settlement I saw the video from the front of the bus, and the cyclists were riding in a straight line right where they got hit, and the bus never deviated from its path either. The driver swore he was making a safe pass when the cyclists “swerved” in front of him, which I will say is probably the way he remembers it. But it just isn’t the way it happened. You can see there was a steel rail to the right of the cyclists that took away any option for using the hit-from-behind protocols to avoid any part of this wreck.

Ted Rogers got the same memo about the Camp Pendleton bike wreck settlement plus a few more today. Morning Links: Settlement in Camp Pendleton bus collision could have far reaching bike benefits

A cyclist in the Great White North was hit because he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Cyclist seriously injured after collision on Park Avenue Seriously, it’s in the sub-head. The narrative says the cyclist was hit by an eastbound vehicle as he was making a left turn but fails to give the initial direction of travel for the cyclist. It does show a collapsed windshield on the weapon vehicle which indicates a bit of speed from that vehicle. The Street View of the location shows a signal-controlled intersection, but the narrative fails to say which vehicle was violating the right of way and ignoring the traffic control. And seriously this one could go either way, cyclist making a left is hit after the light changes before he could clear the intersection, or the cyclist jumped the red to try to beat cross traffic. Anyway, intersection protocols to avoid or to mitigate injury, and get the infrastructure up to Dutch to prevent.

I keep telling you guys, Don’t Hit The Pedestrians! Because cyclists hitting pedestrians get bigger fines than drivers that do the same thing in the same place. Cyclist fined over footpath collision This cyclist got essentially the same fine as a driver got for killing a cyclist last year, shameful.

MO cyclists defeat an amendment to a bill that would have cut all bicycle spending from the transportation budget. UPDATED: Missouri Pols Launch Sneak Attack on Bike Funding and Bicycle Ban Amendment Defeated: Cyclists Celebrate “Victory of the Decade” Note that there is still no money allocated for cycling, but we are celebrating not being completely excluded from the process.

We celebrate such tiny victories in this country. On The “Protected” M Street Cycletrack I posit this is because otherwise we have nothing to celebrate at all. See the previous paragraph for an example of celebrating “nothing at all”.

A much better writer than me nails the existential problem with cars in an urban environment. Miserable subway passengers, a grouchy runner – and a lesson from Bob Dylan There is the problem in a nutshell, drivers are emotionally cut off from the environment while still being physically a part of it. You have your sound-proofing, AC, tinted window glass, and stereo system with amplifier, that completely isolates you from interacting with anyone else in the environment, while you guide more than 2 tons of deadly force through that environment. Drivers have no empathy because they have nothing to empathise with or to.

When the Big One hits, or even a local Little One, a bike can be your best choice for mobility. When the Big One Hits, We’ll Be Mobile Add to this the news that when the quake and tsunami that shut down the Fukushima nuclear plant the only thing moving in some places was the local bicycle fleet. There was no gas or fuel for busses, and the train tracks were too damaged to run the trains for from days to months depending on the location and how close it was to the epicenter. A few trucks could bring in food and a little fuel that was only used to get the trucks back out for more food, not for local transport. Many places were otherwise completely shut off until train service was restored up to a year later.

After my trip to the chiropractor I’m “Well adjusted”, and the Feed

Today was the bi-weekly trip to the chiropractor and we are finally starting to see some results as my neck and shoulder are less uncomfortable than they were previously. I can get through an entire day at the computer without having the lie down and stick my arm behind my back to relax the muscles in my shoulder, and my neck pain is down significantly. Here’s to being well-adjusted!

Up first another cyclist is killed in the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Bicyclist killed in Boca crash Looks like a hit-from-behind wreck in the bike lane. This is caused by putting bike lanes where barrier protected bike paths should be used instead. Hit-from-behind protocols might have avoided or reduced damages, but really they need to get the infrastructure up to Dutch on this one.

Moving to IL we get a driver hitting and running multiple vehicles and a cyclist. Wilmette driver could face charges after hitting vehicles, cyclist She took out a scooter rider and hit at least one car before mowing down the cyclist. I would hazard a guess that since they didn’t detect drugs or alcohol in the driver pending more sophisticated tests that this driver’s days behind the wheel are pretty much over no matter what else they find. Even if she didn’t do it deliberately she did tons of physical and medical damage, so she needs to be off the roads until whatever was her problem is solved. This is very similar to the wreck in WA just last week where the guy took out the cyclist as collateral damage to whatever medical emergency he was going through.

Hit-and-run in Ted Rogers’ stomping grounds. Police ID Cyclist Killed in Huntington Beach Hit-and-Run; Driver Sought Intersection wreck, assumed red light runner is the driver of the weapon vehicle. Intersection protocols maybe would have helped, getting the infrastructure up to Dutch might have helped. Making hit-and-run a major felony might help, but it’s all “might” and “maybe” right now. One thing that would have helped is the driver not running the red light.

Speaking of Ted… A double dose of Morning Links for your entertainment and edification. Ted covered a big event in LA over the weekend so his big post was this morning instead of yesterday.

They might be more polite in Canuckistan, but that doesn’t prevent “Road Stupid” from taking over after they get behind the wheel. Cyclist injured in hit and run in Airdrie The mode of wreck appears to be hit-from-behind, so protocols to avoid or to mitigate damages, and get the infrastructure up to Dutch to prevent. And publicly execute hit-and-run drivers that kill, that would be a great deterrent to H&R. Maybe by slow torture?

Another Enn Zed cyclist is killed by being hit from behind by a semi on the open road in less than a week. Goodwin ‘good at everything she wanted to do’ They had to bring a boom truck to lift the semi off the cyclist and bike to get them out from under the truck. That says to me the truck driver just was not paying enough attention to the situation and flat ran the cyclist over. I don’t think the cyclist had any place to go or time to get there to avoid the wreck, which only leaves getting the infrastructure up to Dutch as the only way to not have this wreck.

Infrastructure! news from AZ. Local Cyclists Want City to Increase Safety on Roads They already have “American decent” bike infrastructure there, but we really want to bring it up to Dutch so that the maximum number of people can benefit from it.

A metric buttload of links, and the rest of the Feed

Yep, three days since the last list of wrecks results in lots of wrecks, whodathunkit? Also I’m kinda distracted by the Sprint Cup race that was postponed from yesterday on the tube. That wreck that took Junior out was truly weird. I’m no big fan of the Junior Nation but I don’t bear any ill will to Dale Jr. at all, especially not for the kind of wreck like that. Now Jimmy Johnson getting his car damaged without hurting himself or anyone else, that I’m cool with. I have a lot of antipathy about Jimmy that I can’t explain, because when Richard Petty was equally dominant I had nothing like that against him, likewise Darrell Waltrip back in the 80′s. In fact I knew Darrell back then and used to hang out in his speed shop on my days off. Of course I was racing mostly-stock econoboxes on courses defined by rubber traffic cones in parking lots, not in stock cars back then.

Up first is a local story to WoaB World HQ. Cyclist hit by DART train near Lawnview Station The question on this one is did the cyclist fall down because he was hit by the train, or was he hit by the train because he fell down, and if that’s true why did he fall down? Still he was hit by a train on the platform, which implies he was wanting to use the train (DART has bike racks on all their trains). So just maybe a matter of standing back on the platform?

I think the Big Story is the cyclist fatally right-hooked in Boston last week. Bicyclist killed in Charlestown hit-and-run and Somerville truck yard searched after cyclist killed in Sullivan Square crash also Truck sought in fatal hit-and-run and this one Arrest made in connection with Boston hit and run finally Alleged Charlestown Hit-and-Run Driver Bail Set at $5,000 Right hook means the cyclist had virtually no reaction time from the witness descriptions so unable to apply intersection protocols to avoid. Only way to survive this would be infrastructure that completely separated bicycle and heavy truck traffic, or in cases where that was not physically possible making operators of heavy mass killing machines liable for wrecks with bicycles and pedestrians.

Next up is a strange and bizarre wreck where the cyclist injured was just more collateral damage to a wreck that started well before the weapon vehicle even got to her. Cyclist injured, a dozen cars damaged in wreck at college and Driver Hits Cars, Bicyclist on Park Street As I read the links, the driver began having a medical issue that made him a passenger in the vehicle a few blocks before pushing another car into the cyclist, then continuing down the street bouncing off parked cars before finally doing enough damage to the weapon vehicle to cause it to stop, where the driver got out, walked a few steps and then collapsed unconscious. This is something that only barrier-protected infrastructure could even have a chance of preventing. I mean what can you do about an unconscious driver? The driver certainly can’t do anything about it. This is a wreck that I expect to see even fewer of than we do now after the full rollout of the ACA catches people who had hidden medical conditions before they turn into life-altering events. I mean right now it’s a 3 or 4 a year thing, but I expect it to become one or none per year after the ACA is fully implemented.

Continuing on the bizarre wreck theme a salmon cyclist avoiding a vehicle in the bike lane is part of a multi-vehicle wreck. 3 injured in crash involving bicycle in St. Augustine and Cyclist in critical condition after hit by car OK Lots of blame to go around in this one. First is the truck driver that made the right turn into the bike lane, the cyclist would have been hit from behind had he been going the right direction in the lane. Second the cyclist should not have been riding salmon. The rest of the victims seem to have been innocent bystanders caught up in the wreck. This was such a fluster cluck I can’t say how to avoid it, but I know in this case the number of victims would have been far less had the cyclist not been riding salmon.

Still in the once-again most deadly state in the US to walk or ride a bicycle we get a driver running a red light and hitting two people crossing on bicycles. Bicyclists injured after driver runs red light Nothing the cyclists or infrastructure could do to prevent this wreck as the driver was ignoring a traffic control already. Witness reports had the driver enter the intersection several seconds after the red light. Fortunately neither cyclist was killed or suffered life-altering injury.

Still in FL we get a hit-from-behind hit-and-run. Family pleads for driver in cyclist’s death to come forward Since the cyclist was not hit in the road but on the shoulder the fact of no lights or reflectors should be moot, especially since the time bracket of the wreck straddled local sunrise. Anyway protocols to avoid or mitigate damages, and infrastructure to prevent. Dutch infrastructure, not the paint on the side of the road “infrastructure” we get in the US.

On the theme of red-light runners we get this hit-and-run in AZ. Deputies search for car that hit young rider on Tucson’s NW side The kid was hit in the crosswalk crossing with adult supervision and the crossing light. The driver ran from the scene without even checking to see if the kid was OK. Intersection protocols might have helped avoid or mitigate damages, but as the driver ignored the built infrastructure changing the physical infrastructure would only change the location of the wreck.

An incomplete wreck report from CO. Cyclist seriously injured after being hit by car Basically they know a cyclist was hit somewhere in the city and that’s pretty much it as I read the post today.

A NYC report shows why you need to have wearable ID in case your wallet gets stolen after the wreck. Police Need Help Identifying Cyclist Critically Injured By Cab Since the only witness reporting to the police was the driver of the weapon vehicle no charges have been filed. Also nothing about the mode is currently known.

Assault charges filed against a driver? Police: Driver intentionally hit Portland cyclist and A PDX Driver Faces Punishment for Hitting a Cyclist, For Once, And It’s Steep. Multiple witnesses reported the driver deliberately rammed the cyclist by swerving into him at a stop light. Unfortunately in the days since this happened people have found a way to blame the cyclist for being the victim of the assault.

First of several links from CA. Cyclist struck, killed Thursday identified as Livermore man, 48 SWCC wreck as the only surviving witness was the driver of the weapon vehicle. Intersection wreck so all the protocols apply, and getting the infrastructure up to Dutch would prevent similar wrecks.

First link from Ted today is not happy. Update — Bike rider killed in Coachella collision The update places this as a classic SWSS. You know what I think of those, but protocols to avoid, and infrastructure would make the “swerve” impossible.

Next link is also not fun. Update — bike rider killed in Huntington Beach hit-and-run Apparent red light runner and since the driver ran we can assume that was the red light runner as well because the innocent don’t run. Intersection wreck so use the protocols to “do something” about the wreck for cyclists, and get the infrastructure up to Dutch to prevent.

Something Nice from BikingInLA. A brief look at Sunday’s successful, stress-free Wilshire CicLAvia I wish we could get something like this here in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell, Home of 3 miles of bike lanes (if you count both directions) and 1000 miles of streets.

Moving to Jolly Olde an unrepentant cyclist killer is released without a day of jail. Driver who killed cyclist on Stoke Heath pedestrian crossing escapes jail The perp has never admitted to or apologized for the death, and still walks without jail? TANJ!

What appears to be a hit-from-behind wreck in Enn Zed. Cyclist dies following truck crash and Cyclist killed in road crash also Cyclist dies in Palmerston North collision Apparent hit-from-behind so protocols to avoid or mitigate the damages, and get the infrastructure right so that large trucks and bicycles are not competing for road space, because cyclists will lose that battle.

Infrastructure! news from Enn Zed. ‘Tragic’ cycle deaths highlight challenges for safety panel Apparently nobody in New Zeeland can find the CROW manual link for the English translation. Design manual for bicycle traffic €90, if I had an account that I could use to buy one I would present it to the local city council here in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell.

More reasons why Enn Zed is not close to heaven. Courts ‘soft’ on cyclist killers I have very few words on this and most of them are not suitable for a “family” blog.

Hail hail, it didn’t happen here, and the Feed

Fortunately for us the baseball sized hail that hit north Texas bypassed Casa de El Poeta in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. All we got was a big breeze and a few more branches lost from the trees in the neighborhood, than have not fared well this winter/spring. We have some people who are just now finishing up clearing the debris from the December ice storm, and now we have further storm debris to clean up. And as you may have read we had another shooting at Ft. Hood, a long bike ride down the road in Killeen. I feel for my brothers in green, and wonder what can be realistically done about the situation. I mean we spend months teaching people how to kill, and knowingly send them into situations where a significant number of people are going to be psychologically damaged, then bring them back home and toss them back into the rest of society with no treatment until they snap. The shooter in this case had already had a minor break and was getting treatment, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Up first is more on that brutal hit-and-run in Boston. Cyclist Involved in Serious Hit & Run Accident in Charlestown More in it does appear to be a right hook, and where an earlier report said they had the driver and weapon vehicle it now says they are still looking. Still they know at least that it was a garbage truck and they don’t have many to look through to find it.

Just a few miles west (Texas “few”) we get another MA hit-and-run. 17-year-old bicyclist injured in hit-and-run in Easthampton Location and debris suggest a hit-from-behind wreck, hopefully LEO will have enough debris to use micro tags in the paint to identify at least the make and year of manufacture of the vehicle if the part had factory paint on it.

A CA report on a driver charged with murder after leaving a social media message that he was going on a “death ride”. Pleasanton teen accused of murder in fatal crash was tailgating, witness testifies I hope the driver never gets out of prison. If he does I hope that he is never allowed to use any motorized transport for the rest of his life, unless he’s being transported to a hospital by an ambulance. Since this is in CA I suspect he’ll get 20 years, serve 10 and be eligible to apply for a new license as soon as he gets out of the prison gate.

A poorly-worded wreck report from the state that is once again most deadliest place to walk or ride a bike in the US. Driver apprehended after fleeing hit-and-run scene The Street View Shows a very bicycle-unfriendly route that is the only crossing of the freeway for over a mile to the south and 3/4 of a mile to the north. If the cyclist was a gutter bunny or sidewalk rider then he would have been in the actual offramp while crossing.

Also from FL comes a suggestion of why not being inside a building or car is so dangerous for people living in or visiting that state. Doreen Landstra, Elderly Woman Who Killed 3 In Car, Gets Suspended License That’s right, no prison time, she gets to keep the car and in a few months she can drive again after killing 3 people in the second time she “mistook” the gas for the brake pedal.

More on the drunk driver getting 8 years for killing a cyclist in Jolly Olde. Drunk, speeding, hit and run van driver who killed cyclist sentenced to eight years in jail and Drunken van driver jailed for eight years after killing Folkingham cyclist I think the sweetest thing about this is the 10 year driving ban doesn’t start until he completes all of his period of incarceration, and can not be reduced via “good behaviour”.

Also in the UK a cyclist “wins” a door prize. Cyclist injured in crash It isn’t often we get a report on a wreck like this from the UK because of their media laws. Since this wreck happened very close to the intersection I suspect the cyclist was trying to avoid getting hooked and rode in the door zone to escape.

And a speeding police car with lights and sirens going must still wait until it is safe to pass a cyclist in Jolly Olde. Injured cyclist wins his damages action and Injured cyclist wins damages action From what I’m reading the cyclist was hit at a pinch point where the cyclist would have had to get on the sidewalk to avoid getting hit because the actual road surface was too narrow to fit a car and a cyclist together without overlap, and the cyclist was hit as far over (to the left because they drive on the wrong side of the roads there) as he could get. Had the driver been going the speed limit or slightly faster than the limit the cyclist would have been able to get to safety but at the speed the weapon vehicle was travelling the cyclist did not have time to clear the pinch point.

Enter witty headline here, and the Feed

Just not feeling it today, what with the tornado watch and the trees bouncing around the house and the dull grey skies. I ain’t got no funny in me today. I don’t want funny today, I want a good malty dark beer with just enough hops to make it legally a beer. I spent the last month drinking IPAs and beers “inspired” by IPA, and I think I have about reached my limits on bitter hops. I’m looking for something with even less hops than a Shiner Bock, but with more flavor than a schwartzbier. I’m going to be open for suggestions over the weekend (I check the comments twice a day or more), and make my selection come Sunday. And the reason I spent so much time with IPA and similar beers is I bought a six-pack at the beginning of March and it took me most of the month to drink it, plus two singles of a different brand. I never will be an alcoholic at this rate. And that’s something I have always wondered about other poor people, if you don’t have enough to have a place to sleep or food to eat how do you have enough for beer and cigarettes? (wanders off muttering to himself)

Up first was a hard decision today, as we only had one late link to any North American wrecks. This appears to be a right hook from what little we know at this point. Bicyclist killed in Charlestown Right now nothing about this wreck is sure except that it was in an intersection and the cyclist was killed by a heavy vehicle, but it looks like the heavy vehicle was turning right when the cyclist was hit around the middle of the weapon vehicle. At this point they are not sure of the type of vehicle but are going on the assumption that the weapon vehicle was a garbage truck. Anyway, intersection wreck, maybe the protocols would avoid or reduce the amount of damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

Taxes done, and the Feed

Well the waiting for the documents was longer than the time it took to file this year, but we did it. We finally got our tax return in this afternoon. Once again we didn’t make enough money to pay any taxes and all the withholding will be refunded. Even with what I made from the blog and the money I got from Dad’s estate we still did not make more than the standard deduction for a married couple. Which is kinda sad when you stop to think about it, that two people working to the maximum of their ability don’t even make enough to come close to paying taxes. I don’t think we cleared the standard deduction for a single person living alone, either. If we did it wasn’t by very much.

On a more cheerful note I’m getting the dosing schedule worked out so that I have enough allergy meds in my system to be effective, but not so much that my brain shuts down and I just want to find a place to lie down. This is important as I don’t get much done from bed. Of course there are times when all I want to do is waste time.

Allergies barely contained, and the Feed

Just letting you know that while things are not really bad on the health front, they aren’t all that perky either. I’m walking a fine line between not enough and too much on my allergy meds, because if I don’t stay above a therapeutic threshold I get no effect, but just a little over that and I get zonked semi-conscious and unable to function. Add to that the “stuff” I have been visiting the chiropractor over, and let’s just say that getting old ain’t for sissies to quote my wife’s mother.

Also we had our two weeks of spring, the high outside WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell was 80°F.

We got lucky today with few new wrecks to report, all from Jolly Olde. Rope peril for cyclist This is far from the “rope trick” spell used in D&D, this is more like the “clothesline trick” used to take out German motorcycle couriers during WWII. Many of them died, and it almost took out this cyclist. The only way of avoiding this booby trap is a very bright headlight aimed right where it will get on oncoming vehicle operators’ eyes. I think you can see where the problem would be with that.

Next we have another cyclist riding next to an overturning truck. Cyclist injured after lorry overturns on Chester Road, Stretford, causing severe traffic delays I think this makes two very similar wrecks in as many days, and the article is more concerned about the people going to the footy match being delayed than they are about the cyclist who escaped being crushed by inches.

And I really hope this article is not an April Fool’s joke by the media outlet. Kingsley Gordon-Allen killed cyclist Edward Orrey while drink-driving in February last year I’m sure your asking yourself what the heck is going on thinking that this might be a prank? The driver is going to jail for a very long time, and he’s going to be banned from driving for a total of up to 18 years, the 8 he’s in prison plus the additional 10 after release. I have seen DUI drivers that killed a cyclist get 250 hours of community service and a slight fine, which is why I think this might be a prank.

Recovering from the first dose of allergy medicine for the year, and the Feed

I’m now on my third dose of allergy meds for the year, but that first one always knocks me on my butt for some reason. Usually I’m smart enough to just sleep it off and continue with my life after I have adjusted to the stuff, but yesterday I persisted in trying to write a blog post while semi-stoned on medication. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then many people say that about a lot of things that turn out to be really bad ideas. I feel much better today.

Up first is a confusing hit-from-behind wreck in the Rio Grande Valley. Truck hits, kills bicyclist north of Edinburg If I’m reading the narrative right, the cyclist wasn’t actually on the road but possibly on the shoulder or riding in the dirt beside the road, and the truck in question went off the road first then hit the cyclist and then a tree. In case you were wondering the Interstate has parallel access roads where the cyclist could ride legally that are pretty much the only through route north and south in the area which have to be used to access a legal crossing for anyone trying to go east or west from one side of the Interstate to the other. If the truck was on the Interstate and hit the cyclist on the frontage road the driver was seriously out of control of either the truck or himself.

A little closer and a lot less deadly is this wreck in Houston. Houston bicyclist seeks driver who fled after striking him Since the cyclist’s lighting or lack of was not mentioned in the article we have to assume the cyclist had at least a rear reflector, and most likely a good light, so that part of the protocols has been met. Not known if the driver was going slow enough to execute the “dive to the ditch” portion of the protocols, but getting the infrastructure right would definitely prevent a wreck like this.

Next up is a supposedly stop-sign running cyclist in Shreveport. Shreveport cyclist seriously injured when hit by car Looking at the Street View of the site this is a two-way stop with extremely limited sight lines but only a 25 MPH speed limit. Even so this is an area that would require extreme vigilance on the part of the cyclist to stay safe. Intersection protocols to the max here, and get the infrastructure right to prevent wrecks like this.

Update on that weird wreck in OR. Critically injured Portland cyclist expected to survive I don’t know how this one happened yet. The only picture I have access to does not show the damages visible in the only picture I have access to are completely at odds with the written description of the wreck.

A UK cyclist dodges a very big bullet. Cyclist speaks of moment he was hit by rolls of paper as lorry overturned on Chester Road Not anywhere close to a typical wreck, avoiding this one was a matter of pure luck.

The Big Story is a cyclist hit by a truck in Oz. Cyclist dies in truck collision also Man charged over double fatal Vic crash and even Cyclist killed in crash with truck Hit from behind but “Why?” is still not known with the driver of the weapon vehicle hanging around to talk with LEO. Infrastructure to prevent, that much is sure.

Anther wreck in Enn Zed. Cyclist knocked from bike Not much information forthcoming from LEO on this one. It looks like it might be a hit-from-behind or buzz job. The cyclist was reported to have been part of a group ride which makes anything resembling a SMIDSY (the UK, Oz and Enn Zed version of the blind driver) extremely unlikely.

Our first Infrastructure! link comes from Houston. Bicycle safety Houston has said that they want zero cyclists killed per year. That is an ambitious goal for a town that kills an average of 4 cyclists a year, with 3 of those being completely compliant with the law at the time of their deaths. That leaves 2 ways of reaching that goal, draconian driver enforcement, or Dutch-style infrastructure that completely removes cyclists from conflict points.

Even a scarlet state like OK can see the benefits of normalizing cycling as a mode of transportation. Cycling on the rise in downtown OKC; provides economic, traffic benefits And they still miss mentioning the health benefits.

This is as much crap drivers as it is bad infrastructure. VIDEO: Terrifying near misses for cyclist at Deptford ‘nightmare’ junction A near-constant stream of turning drivers repeatedly cut off the cyclists in the videos. The real “infrastructure” needed here is LEO capable of issuing tickets for failure to yield, or assault with a deadly weapon.
