Even though this is my slow season as most of the bike wrecks I get reports on from the Internet come from the Northern Hemisphere where bike riding is either difficult because of low traction conditions or uncomfortable because of cold weather, I still managed to get a full Feed this morning. From the first article I read though it’s more about opinions about people riding bicycles than actual reports on people riding bicycles. There were a lot of motorcycle wrecks in the Feed also, all with the same MO, left cross on a brightly lighted street and “I didn’t see him” as the excuse for killing the motorcycle rider.
The only actual bicycle wreck I could find in the Feed was this train wreck in Portland. Bicycle rider escapes serious injury after being hit by MAX train in Gresham One of the comments indicated that the bike rider may have been pushed by the crowd of commuters into the path of the train, the cyclist was not seriously injured which tells me that the cyclist was not moving very fast if at all. Generally speaking if the cyclist was actually riding the injuries tend to be serious to fatal. I hope the cyclist recovers from her wreck as well as the people that saw the wreck recover mentally.
Now we get the la-la-land of the opinions about bicyclists articles. Coach turns corner in attack on cyclists Apparently voters in Toronto have just elected a total nutter as their mayor, who brought in a speaker at his swearing-in that has made the ridiculous assertion that everybody that rides a bicycle is a Communist (Pinko) Light. “‘I’m wearing pink for all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles,’ Cherry infamously told Toronto city council on Dec. 7 at newly minted Mayor Rob Ford’s investiture. ‘Put that in your pipe, you left-wing kooks.’” The Mayor has stated that all car/bike wrecks are the fault of the cyclist for being there to be hit and has also expressed a total lack of sympathy for pedestrians unless they were hit by bicycles in which case steps must be taken to eliminate the bicycle menace from society.
In Holland bike paths are a victim of their own success. Dutch cyclists caught up in the wheels of success During rush hour there are more than 1.75 million bicycles on the roads and bike paths of the Netherlands. They actually have bicycle traffic jams where they can’t get everyone waiting at a traffic light on a bicycle through the intersection on a single light cycle. Sounds like a slice of heaven to me…
And emotions run high in Enn Zed over cyclists and cycling. Tragedy on an ordinary day One of the witnesses to a bike/car wreck saw the rider immediately in front of him injured by debris from the wrecked car and was just missed by the car. I don’t call that being a witness, I call that being a victim of the wreck, but that was the situation as it unfolded.
And that’s all the news that gives me fits today, join me in wishing Mrs. Opus a very happy birthday.
