Yesterday’s post was a nice blowing off of steam for yr fthfl svnt, but I have a Job To Do. While other political things interest me and are important, the real job of this blog is to keep bicyclists from getting killed by informing them on how to use the infrastructure as it exists, and actively promoting fixing the infrastructure as soon as possible so as to prevent as many wrecks as possible. I like live readers, because dead people don’t read my blog.
Up first is more reaction to the 41 month sentence handed down for the deadly hit-and-run last year in Seattle. Hit-and-run driver gets 41 months for killing cyclist and Hit-run death of cyclist brings 41-month prison term also Man who killed Seattle bicyclist in hit-and-run sentenced to 41 months more Normandy Park man sentenced to 41 months in prison for the hit and run death of cyclist not done yet Normandy Park Man Sentenced to 41 Months for Bicycle Hit and Run Death last link 41-month sentence for driver who killed bicyclist in Seattle
Way down the road from WoaB World HQ in the beautiful Suburbs of Hell a cyclist is hit and killed in Odessa. Mexican cyclist struck, killed in Midland wreck Apparently someone forgot the statute that people on the sidewalk have right of way over people leaving the road to use a driveway. Never the less, Intersection wreck because every driveway and parking lot entrance is an intersection, use the intersection protocols to avoid, and get the infrastructure right to prevent. Among the things that need to be right is LEO knowing who has the right of way and who needs to yield when making a turning movement. Also commenter Richard Thomas is a “diminutive of Richard”, if you follow my logic…
And killing cyclists has become so ubiquitous in MI a killer tries to hide a murder that way. Troy man’s body, bike found dumped in cornfield Tried to make to look like a hit-and-run that knocked the body and bike all the way off the road, but he forgot to put the helmet and shoes on the body…
Since this is a NY newspaper, I have to assume that in spite of the place names being identical to OR towns this was a NY wreck. Cops: Medford woman hit, killed while biking It is especially telling that the newspaper felt it necessary to state that the driver did NOT hit-and-run. Hit from behind wreck, use the hit-from-behind protocols to avoid, get the infrastructure right to prevent. From the article and comments, the cyclist had to bypass a bike lane in order to get home, so sub-standard infrastructure contributed to this wreck.
A MA rider is buzzed and injured. Bicyclist Injured on Salem Street Riding next to the white line invites a buzz job. Hit-from-behind protocols to avoid, get the infrastructure right so that cyclists don’t ride in the gutter to prevent. Also make a buzz job a crime similar to assault with a deadly weapon.
A KS cyclist forgets one of the primary rules of what to do when the light won’t change. Teen bicyclist seriously injured after collision with car When the light won’t change because the sensor won’t detect your bike, you have to treat the light like a stop sign, and not proceed until cross traffic has cleared. And to prevent fix the infrastructure so a kid on a bike doesn’t have to cross a major highway even with a traffic light.
A WY cyclist is hit crossing NV. Cyclist Injured in Hit and Run on Mt. Rose Highway and Cyclist Injured in Hit-and-Run on Mt. Rose Hwy WY cyclist hit in NV by a vehicle with CA plates. Witnesses reported the vehicle swerved in the direction of the cyclist and had a brake light out. So, hit from behind at speed but mostly a buzz job that made contact and the cyclist is very lucky to not have gotten a full-force impact. Hit-from-behind protocols to avoid, and get the infrastructure right to prevent. Especially the part where cyclists are physically separated from high-speed traffic by a physical barrier when there isn’t room for a 500m space between the two, that bit would be important here.
A teen cyclist is injured in a single vehicle wreck in IN. Teen injured after crashing bicycle Nothing on the mode of the wreck except the cyclist went over the handlebars.
From a CA news outlet a cyclist in IA is assaulted twice by a driver. Police say driver threw bike onto injured cyclist Actually make that three times if you consider the running a stop sign and swerving into the cyclist as the first assault, then throwing the remains of the wrecked bicycle on the cyclist as the second then the punching and kicking as the third. As for how to avoid, this nut sounds like he was targeting the cyclist, that makes dodging kind of hard to do, but it happened in an intersection, so intersection protocols to avoid, and locking up dangerous wingnuts with weapons of mass destruction as vehicles to prevent. Or Infrastructure. More Police: Man throws bicycle on victim after striking him with van
From the Great White North, a cyclist runs a red light and his bike is broken in half. Cyclist critically injured in downtown Montreal Intersection wreck, use the intersection protocols to avoid including the most important one to not enter an intersection until you know it to be clear. Even if the light won’t change for a bicycle, don’t enter the intersection until it is clear for as long as it will take you to get across the intersection. Getting the infrastructure right would prevent a wreck like this. More Cyclist badly hurt after downtown collision
A wreck of a different kind in Canuckistan. Cyclist bites back at dogs Yep, doggies are a hazard, that’s for sure.
Another wreck in Canuckistan. Cyclist dies in collision Nothing on the actual mode of the wreck, but LEO indicated that lack of street lighting was a factor. Also they never said the cyclist lacked lights or reflectors.
LifeStyle in the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Memorial Ride for 2 Cyclists Killed in Cooper City and Memorial Bike Ride Held For Two Cyclists and Memorial for cyclists killed by burglary suspect
And those are almost all the links that gave me fits today, I have something special that will get a post all its own after I get done with this one.
