Need tech support for Francis/es

Special post tonight because I have a problem with Francis/es, specifically with the IGH on the back. The issue is not shifting, “ghost” shifting, and missing gears.

Here are the symptoms: Hard to keep in 1st or whatever gear I’m getting on the 1st gear spot on the shifter. Keeps trying to jump out of gear unless I hold it forward. When I try to get second I’m successful about 1/3 of the time, but when I go for higher gears I’m back in whatever gear that was when I selected 1st until I get to 5th or 6th when it goes into some really high gear that cuts my cadence down to about 30 RPM from over 100 (not exaggerating!).

This is the Sturmey-Archer X-RD8 8 speed hub with drum brake. An additional symptom I just remembered is the drum brake was good enough to lock the back tire when the bike was delivered, but now is only slightly more effective than dragging my feet.

So, is this fixable by a semi-competent bike builder with a limited tool kit, or should I be hauling Francis/es to the LBS?

Pollen count is high again, and the Feed

Another day of hitting the diphenhydramine for the sneezing and goopy eyes, but other than that I feel fine (cue REM singing “End of the World”). And I found a partial solution to getting my brain to shut off at night when I’m trying to sleep, a simple one really. I found some paper and pencils, and started to draw all the devices that needed to come out of my brain. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that sooner. Stuff wants out, so give it a way to get out. Like pooping for the mind, better out than in. Now I can return to plans for world domination and con- whoops did I write that out loud? 😉

A cyclist is killed in a hit-from-behind wreck in IL. Bicyclist Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver In Forest Park Driver was speeding which contributed to both the crash and the fatality caused by the crash. The estimated speed of the weapon vehicle at impact is fatal in 80 to 85% of wrecks with cyclists. Hit-from-behind protocols maybe could have kept the cyclist alive assuming he had the sight lines and reaction time to employ them. Getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” probably would have prevented the wreck.

WY just can’t get a break as another cyclist is killed. Sheridan cyclist killed, wife injured in crash Hit-from-behind wreck (again) but the driver may have been targeting the cyclists so protocols would have been moot. Infrastructure “up to Dutch” would have placed the cyclists away from the highway or separated by a wall if there was no room otherwise, so they would not have been hit. Even if this had been some kind of road rage incident placing the cyclists in their own infrastructure would have had a calming effect on the situation.

More on the NYC terror attack on cyclists that NYPD is totally ignoring. Brooklyn cyclist injured by rope trap in Prospect Park Same situation as before. A trap made to not be seen in the low light severely injures a cyclist and NYPD can’t even be bothered to file a report, much less investigate an act of domestic terrorism.

Another NYC wreck. Vehicle Hits Cyclist At Ninth Avenue, 57th Street Nothing on the mode and NYC “doesn’t have room” to get the infrastructure “up to Dutch”…

Our daily Ted is pretty interesting today. Morning Links: New study shows benefits of protected bike lanes; OC cyclist threatened and harassed on PCH

And those were all the links I could find that had stuff I could use here. I had a lot of links to UK wrecks that did not have anything except the names of cyclists and drivers, and the make/model of the cars that hit the cyclists. Since this blog is more about education that merely counting the losses I left those links out.
