Well, I have lots of things to do today. One of them is to make beans and rice, today with leftover Spam from last night’s dinner. I used the last of the black beans and lentils today which means I will have to replenish when we get back from vacation. The other thing I’m doing is data entry tonight for the Wendy Davis campaign. I will be transcribing pledges and other information from the forms done by the operators into the electronic form required by the state. So I may have to do the post in two parts leaving to do other work in the middle.
Up first are the rest of the links to the report on Friday about the woman killed when her bike broke down in a place where there was no room to get off the road and still be able to work on the bike. Catholic U coach dies in charity bike ride in KY and Cyclist killed in Sadieville crash was riding to fight cancer also Baltimore Woman Cycling Cross-Country To Benefit Cancer Killed By Truck more Ulman Cancer Fund Releases Statement On Bicyclist Killed In Scott County this Cyclist killed in Scott County crash another one St. Mary’s College Graduate Killed During Cross Country Bicycle Ride for Cancer Not enough room to get completely off the road, if that had been a motor vehicle that broke down there would have been a serious wreck with multiple fatalities instead of one cyclist dead and another injured. A report I can’t find any more (link won’t open) to link to said there was a private driveway about 1.5 (+/-) miles from the wreck site that would have been available to work on the bike, but at this point I don’t know that the bike was in a condition to roll that distance, and I know I would not want to carry a bike that distance while walking in bike shoes.
More evidence that a cyclist’s life is cheap in TX. Elderly man gets probation in 2012 wreck that killed bicyclist I’m still furious that anyone at all could get deferred adjudication for killing another human being. People spend more time in jail for killing dogs than cyclists. People here in TX get more jail time for littering than this guy got for killing someone.
A VA cyclist is hit on a bike/ped bridge. VDOT contractor was driver in SUV-bicycle collision and the video of the wreck (trigger warning) Car-bike collision on Norfolk’s pedestrian access bridge adjacent to Note the time stamp on the lower left-hand corner of the video, the cyclist has less than 3 seconds between the weapon vehicle becoming visible around the bend and the impact. Not that there was anyplace for her to get away from the weapon vehicle. You can see at 0:21 the cyclist hitting the door or mirror of the weapon vehicle and the wall to the right at nearly the same time. Note also that in the 1080p view the license plate of the weapon vehicle is clearly legible. Still trying to figure out how nobody could write a ticket with an HD video recording of the wreck on a freaking bike/ped path!
Lots of links from the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike for 8 out of 9 years (they managed to get a bit below LA for a year). SWFL cyclists face injury, death on dangerous roads also Florida is a hazardous place for cyclists, pedestrians this one too Cyclist credits “miracle” for survival not done yet Ironman triathlete struck, driver not cited And that last one pretty much sums up why more cyclists get killed in FL than any other state (18% of fatal bike wrecks happen in FL) when a cyclist gets hit in the bike lane and nothing happens to the driver of the weapon vehicle. It is as if when you are shot the cop just says “You only got grazed, move along.” to the bleeding victim.
More from FL. Cyclist seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle Nothing on the wreck besides location in an intersection, so protocols might have been useful in avoiding or reducing injury, and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” would have prevented the motor vehicle from getting to the cyclist in the first place.
This GA wreck turned out much better that it could have. A bullied bicyclist gets the last punch When the drunk nearly hits you once then gets out of the penis extender truck and starts swinging, protocols pretty much go out the window along with the driver’s sanity check. It’s good that the cyclist was able to disable the driver before anyone was seriously injured.
Left cross on a CO cyclist results in multiple charges. Hit-and-run crash seriously injures Fort Collins cyclist Intersection wreck so perhaps intersection protocols would have avoided or reduced injuries, but real bicycle infrastructure with real laws that protect cyclists and pedestrians would have prevented the wreck, maybe. The driver did fail to yield so who knows what would have happened if this had been intended as shared space (not likely, but possible). More Police: Cyclist seriously injured after Loveland hit-and-run
Semi-good news about a WY wreck. Woman charged with aggravated homicide in death of Sheridan cyclist Really good news would be the dead cyclist had miraculously recovered and was alive now, but homicide charges are the next-best thing.
A single-bike wreck in PA sends a cyclist to hospital. North Allegheny student seriously hurt in bike accident at North Park For some reason the cyclist hit the guard rail, with no other vehicles reported nearby at the time of the wreck. And I have no clue as to what happened and can’t give any advice on avoiding or preventing a similar wreck.
A MA cyclist is hit with the side of a school bus. School bus hits cyclist Intersection wreck, and the current reports are the bus hit the cyclist hard enough to cause sheetmetal damage to the bus so not a low-speed wreck. Protocols to maybe avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.
Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: Career criminal arrested in fatal San Bernardino County hit-and-run
Another infrastructure-related wreck in the UK. Woman seriously injured in crash hits out at cycling network If a cyclist can get seriously injured or killed riding in bike infrastructure as intended by design and law, then the infrastructure and law are both deficient.
OK this one is just strange… Tandem woman badly injured in Gullane bicycle crash Apparently the cyclist density in the UK (or at least this part of the UK) that perfect strangers on bicycles can actually crash into each other. And because of bad infrastructure, they do.
Infrastructure! news, that “study” claiming an increase in head injury when bike share goes in was as fraudulent and misleading as the previous “study” that claimed “85%” reduction in head injury from bicycle helmets done by the same guy… Study: Dramatic drop in head injuries when cities implement bike share Turns out that both total injury and head injury go down with bike share, but the proportion of head injury to other injury goes up slightly. Well this fits in with the 77% reduction in leg injury with helmet wearing in the raw data of the “85%” study.
Last link just pisses me off that it happened. Help For Heroes Bikes Stolen These were specially adapted bikes built for people dealing with different abilities after traumatic accident or wartime wounds. There is a special circle in Hell for people like these who steal from the disabled.
And I managed to finish up those links just as I had to leave to go to my evening gig tonight.
