This is such a great “vacation” and the Feed

Well, I spent the better part of 3 days riding a bus, then several more days chasing down an internet connection, just to do the same thing I do at home at a different desk 😦 At least I get a chance to talk to other people from time to time. And since I’m not at home we eat different things and go out to eat more often. In fact we will be going to a local beer and pizza place for dinner tonight as our hostess has a volunteer gig this afternoon and does not like to return home and heat up the house making a quick dinner. I look forward to possibly getting some local NY beers to sample. Since I can’t afford to drink to get drunk I have to drink to enjoy the flavors of the beer. So I look forward to trying different kinds of beer from different areas. “One and done” with dinner for me and beer, even if someone else is buying. Incidentally if someone out there is wondering what would be a nice non-bicycle gift to send, I’m a big fan of malty dark beers with minimal hops, just enough hops to give the beer some character.

Since this is Tuesday we don’t have many links today, but the links have lots of flash in them so don’t open everything at once or your computer performance will take a major hit. Experience speaking here, pay attention!

Up first is a report with two links from just south of my HS stomping grounds in UT. Cyclist killed in early morning accident and Spanish Fork man hit and killed while riding bicycle The second link reported the cyclist’s bike was “in pieces” making determining direction of impact extremely difficult, and they were unable to determine if the cyclist’s lights were in use because they were also destroyed. The cyclist was a considerable distance from the road in the grass and likewise was difficult to locate. The physical evidence at this time points to excessive speed on the part of the weapon vehicle, and that’s about it. The location shows a one lane country road that should be driven slowly as there are many things that could jump out of the ditches and tall grass on the side of the road.

Terrible news about a wreck in KS. Driver distracted in cyclist fatality Driver paying more attention to their cell phone than to the road in front of them and drives off the road just where the cyclist was riding? Hit-from-behind on a clear road with unlimited sight lines so protocols with particular attention to mirrors and escape routes to avoid, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

The grand jury gives a big “FU” to cyclists in MA. No Criminal Charges For Garbage Truck Driver Who Struck And Killed Cyclist The facts in this case were so cut-and-dried that the prosecutor thought he had a very strong case, except for the fact that the victim was a cyclist.

Moving to the UK we get a rare case of cyclist-on-ped wreck. Sheffield dad’s cyclist crash agony The injured pedestrian in this case was walking in the wrong direction and the collision was judged to be his fault, but the basic premise remains, “don’t hit the pedestrians”.

Still in the UK. Police warn public to carry personal alarms after cyclist was stabbed to death in frenzied attack as he rode home from work As someone pointed out in the comments section, a personal alarm would not prevent a knife attack. It might alert others of where to find the body after though.

Our Daily Ted is pretty good today. Morning Links: CD5’s Paul Koretz’ credibility questioned; CABO president calls bike lane advocates Uncle Toms

MD looks at their sorry infrastructure situation and blames most of the wrecks on the victims. After six injuries in three days, police and bike advocates urge safety on Arundel roads I can’t believe they are still blaming cyclists for failing to wear a glow-in-the-dark clown costume and getting hit. That’s the driver’s fault for exceeding the speed they can see things in time to stop.

Infrastructure news from NYC. NYC Bike-Ped Projects Get $21 Million in Federal Funds From State DOT

And final link is this Lifestyle report from Upstate NY. Cyclists Bike in Honor, Remembrance at the David Ryan Memorial Ride

And those were all the links that gave me fits or giggles today. Not many giggles, but thankfully not too many fits either. YMMV.
