Well my phone works again, and the Feed

One of the reasons yesterday’s post turned into this morning’s post was I had to walk to the store and buy a top off card for my phone. If I didn’t need my phone so much for getting about my life I would just chuck the thing and save myself $33.07 a month (including taxes). But as I have lost count of the times having a phone on my person has been mission-critical (for varying values of “mission”) so divesting myself of this expense is no longer an option. And while I was out a strange thing happened, someone driving a silver 4-door sedan honked at me on the sidewalk and the passenger rolled down the window, waved, and shouted “Hi, Opus!” I guess that even walking on the sidewalk I’m still conspicuous and identifiable. Or I am still a minor local celebrity. I don’t care, but it does kinda put a crimp on my bank-robbing career before it even gets started. 😀

Up first is some decent Infrastructure! news from The Particular Hell WoaB is a suburb of. Dallas’ new bike czar is ready to roll; her thoughts on hot-button issues What happens in the Big D eventually percolates over to The Beautiful Suburbs of Hell next to it.

From NYC we get a bike on ped wreck. Salmoning Cyclist Sends Pedestrian To Hospital With Serious Head Injury Don’t hit the pedestrians. Don’t get killed but DON’T HIT THE PEDESTRIANS!

Update on a CA wreck from the early part of the month. Salinas Police Seeking Public’s Help in Bike Rider’s Death Still can’t find the weapon vehicle, raising the probability of the driver being from out of town and the weapon vehicle long gone.

A MT cyclist wrecks after getting crossed or hooked by a turning vehicle. Whitefish man killed in bike crash ID’d The victim died from a head injury despite wearing a bicycle helmet. Intersection protocols to avoid and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

A cyclist gets hit in the Great White North. Cyclist struck by van, suffered head injuries Nothing the cyclist could have done to avoid this wreck, as the driver pulled almost directly in front of him as he passed the intersection. And unless Dutch quality infrastructure increases the common sense of drivers driving across it infrastructure would have made little difference either.

Over in Oz a driver on trial for hit-and-run has a tummyache. Helensburgh hit-and-run accused ‘too sick’ to attend court: Doctor This was a driver that left the cyclist victim in hospital with spinal injuries, and now can’t be at her hearing because she’s puking? I wonder if the cyclist was out of hospital to attend the hearing?

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: LA sheriff’s agree PCH cyclists belong in the lane; women could race in 2015 Pro Challenge

Can I get a resounding “No Duh!”? Separation Enhances Bike Lane Success People don’t like riding bicycles next to multi-ton killing machines, and even on provably safe bike lanes they feel better if there is distance and some kind of physical barrier between bicycles and “Certain Death”. It would be like driving near an active artillery range where the targets were behind a barrier but a bad shot could still land on the highway.

And a huge “Hurrah!” for this one. FHWA to Engineers: Go Ahead and Use City-Friendly Street Designs This is a huge win for people without motor vehicles.

More Infrastructure news from DE. DelDOT Contractor Makes 2nd Try at Fixing Bad Rumble Strips First try just turned the holes into bumps, second try was reasonably smooth, good show! Of course not putting rumble strips in the bike lane at all would have been a much better idea, don’t you think? More Cyclists Report That Second Try’s the Charm for Rumble Strip Patch

And looking at somewhat better than nothing infrastructure from the vantage point of the best bicycle infrastructure in the world and they still keep trying to improve it. New British infrastructure. A real improvement or making stop-start cycling even slower?

Riding politely at night? All Lit Up Redux

Something I hope percolates over to Garland from Dallas. Grab a seat, Dallas’ first beer bike is on the move It runs on alternative fuels, all derived from biomass. 😉

Speaking from experience, maybe they can given good infrastructure. Can Cargo Bikes Help Us to Replace Trucks and Minivans? Francis/es works well in places that restrict motor vehicle operation, I know this from direct experience. Paved roads help, too. XD

WoaB endorses this ride. Bicycle ride honors fallen Marine, raises money for charity

And those were all the links that gave me fits or giggles today, and I got done before midnight whaddaya know?

Back to the grind or once more into the breach, and the Feed

Well Francis/es is still in the shop awaiting pickup after the repair, and I’m trying to find a truck and driver so I don’t have to spend the $27 on commercial delivery (including tax). The report on the hub was “stuff fell out” when it was disassembled after removal from the bike, as whatever broke to cause the initial problem went through the rest of the hub and created havok. It sounds to me like a cascade failure mode, one failure causing another and then another after that until I had 4 gears missing from an 8 speed hub, and no rear brake.

Up first is from the state that seems to be coming down the hardest on killer drivers, CO. Woman who struck, killed cross-country Jesuit cyclist gets 10 years The narrative of the court proceedings remind me of myself after the wreck, I’m wondering if the driver has some kind of brain damage from previous head trauma or drug overdose. And I’m not sure how long her driving ban after prison will last, but by that time they may have good enough bike infrastructure that it won’t matter because she won’t need to drive and just “forgets” to buy a car and get a license…

Hey, I said this looked bad back when it happened, and I was right, sorta. Keene woman pleads guilty in hit-and-run that killed cyclist The most disturbing part of the story is she killed him driving his own car. The best part is because of the way the sentence was handed down she will spend at least 3 years in prison and won’t even start the clock on her license until after she gets out of prison.

The survivors of a CA victim sue the driver. Family of SLO cyclist killed in collision with truck sues driver I’m not sure who did what in this wreck, so I will leave that up to the courts to decide.

An actual current wreck in OR has a tri-geek hitting a parked car. Cyclist hits pickup, injured in SW Bend AFAIK the cyclist was riding the aerobars when he ran into the back of the truck because of restricted vision. Not a big fan of aerobars on the road, but how else can you get used to riding in the aerobars?

Judicial foot-dragging angers local cyclists in fatal wreck. Cyclists Demand Action from Circuit Attorney Weeks After Hit-And-Run Driver Killed Biker The cyclist recorded the wreck, including the driver leaving the scene, and there has been no movement on the case in spite of the suspect turning himself in to LEO.

The champion cyclist killing state in the US gets another one. Police: Boca woman had drugs in system when truck hit, killed cyclist They thought the truck had hit a curb and destroyed the windshield? How big are the curbs on that stretch of road?

Reaction to a MS wreck. Cyclist death is a reminder of the danger I’m still not convinced the wreck narrative is factually provable, I mean the guy rode all the way down from GTA in the Great White North, and he rides salmon and turns in front of oncoming traffic?

A possible hit-and-run in the Great White North. Cyclist struck near Ogilvie and Blair Road Almost no information about this wreck, not enough to tell what happened or how to avoid it, so INFRASTRUCTURE!

A rare UK wreck report gives details of what happened. CUMBRIAN CHARITY CYCLIST LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AFTER HIT AND RUN Hit-from-behind means protocols to avoid or reduce damages and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

Another UK wreck report from after the trial and conviction, the “normal” way I get UK reports. Motorist who killed cyclist on early morning bike ride found guilty Hit-from-behind but the trial points out the cyclist did everything he could to avoid the wreck, leaving only infrastructure to Dutch standards to prevent a similar wreck.

Two links to a wreck in Oz. Cyclist seriously injured in hit and run and a later report Hunt for hit-run driver after cyclist knocked off bike in Frankston I don’t blame the cyclist a bit for wanting to get away from the hospital. I can’t stand to be in one any longer than absolutely necessary. Appears to be either a hook or crossing maneuver on the part of the driver. Remember every driveway or parking lot entrance is an intersection and a chance to get cut off by a driver not paying attention.

A guy riding a LWB bent with USS gets hit by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run after riding 3/4 of the way around the world. ‘Messenger of Peace’ killed by drunk driver in central Russia Nothing on the mode but a great deal about the man riding the bike. RIP.

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: DUI drivers get well-deserved extended sentences, and a careful Menifee cyclist mourned

Lifestyle down the road a bit in Austin. Friends remember Austin cyclist killed on ride

Lifestyle from the Great White North. Foot path at Dufferin Grove Park honours cyclist Jenna Morrison and Pathway to healing: Dead cyclist’s family and friends cut ribbon to memorial footpath This was a cyclist killed because planners didn’t want to provide a painted bike lane to guide drivers away from cyclists and the truck cut the corner and ran her over killing her…

National Infrastructure! news via BikeDE. National Committee Votes for Bike Signals, Contraflow Bike Lanes, Bike Lanes Through Intersections, Bike Boxes and More

And getting the enforcement to comply with the laws in CA infrastructure news. We’re halfway there This is documenting a long-term effort to get LEO to actually enforce the laws as written instead of as their personal prejudices say they “should” be.

Infrastructure from the UK. Son of dead cyclist in plea to Boris Johnson and ‘Stop promoting cycling in an unsafe city,’ son of doctor killed in an accident with lorry tells Boris Johnson

And a bit north in Scotland. Motorists and cyclists should both live up to their responsibilities

And those were all the links that gave me fits or giggles, and damned few giggles today.
