No groceries today, and the Feed

Normally Thursday is “Mule Day” as I haul the groceries home from the store, but that task has been taken over by our son as he comes to the house to do his laundry on our machines, and drives to the store to pick up Mrs. the Poet and the groceries between loads. I couldn’t get them anyway today as Francis/es is still in the shop as the new hub didn’t fit the dropouts on hir (that is a perfectly good non-gendered pronoun in use for decades). But today he had to work late and decided to do his laundry tomorrow, and coincidentally tomorrow is also “$5 Friday”, a promotion for the store we go to. So potentially more groceries for the $ but we have to wait a day. I can live with putting off shopping for 24 hours to get more food for the same $$.

Up first is another link in the saga of mayor vs. cyclist (and 2 witnesses). “Get off my roads” – Sunset Hills mayor under investigation after cyclist hit by car If I wasn’t already certain that the guy that tried to kill me wasn’t already dead I would be requesting the mayor’s whereabouts on the early morning of 08/31/2001… Anyway, this is the Big Story today with all the national attention focussed on the tiny MO suburb of St. Louis.

The next biggest story is the final outcome of government sanctions against a driver that drove right through a cyclist in the middle of her lane in a straight road with miles of visibility. Driver fined $1,500 in crash that killed Annapolis cyclist and Judge says driver ‘didn’t look’ when she fatally struck cyclist This was the case where the driver hit the cyclist going uphill on a straight stretch of road with good visibility but the DA was unable to get a grand jury indictment.

“Didn’t know” you hit and ran? Well that is just dandy, sorry to disturb you then. Police: Driver didn’t realize cyclist hit “Sorry, I’m such an imbecile I don’t know when the deadly weapon I’m guiding around just misses killing someone by a fraction of an inch.” Grrr.

OK still trying to wrap my head around this report, there is something missing from the narrative. Cyclist injured in collision with city street-sweeper at Ontario, Frontenac Sts. OK the cyclist was hit from the left side, that much is plain from the wrecked bike. The level of destruction exhibited on his helmet makes it look like his head was run over by the sweeper, but the lack of blood makes it look like the sweeper was in transit rather than actively sweeping the road. The cyclist had just exited an alley, which makes this an intersection wreck, protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: LA Streets officially suck, road raging Missouri mayor, and Canadian cyclist shot during race

And those were all the wrecks today, now the Infrastructure! news.

NYPD can’t figure out how to enforce traffic laws, whodathunkit? NYPD Wildly Inconsistent With Traffic Enforcement, Study Says When they can’t even issue a ticket after someone gets killed crossing with the light in a crosswalk more than half the time, reading this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Another bit of infrastructure we just take for granted is free parking, but “free” parking still costs someone money, or in some cases safety because parking trumps bike lanes. Don’t Hate the Parking App Profiteers, Hate the Free Parking Game

Another insightful bit from Streetsblog. Want to Improve Traffic Safety? Let People Get Around Without Driving Basic logic, the most deadly thing in the urban environment is the motor vehicle, removing that to the greatest extent possible will drastically reduce the carnage in the streets.

And in the Great White North, bad infrastructure is made worse. Bumps installed to slow down Rideau Canal cyclists This isn’t just a safety risk for cyclists, someone could be taken out by a cyclist knocked off the bike by those bumps designed for motor vehicles with suspension systems.

And in Brazil, the backlash from a criminal assault on a Critical Mass ride has caused major changes in local infrastructure. A Critical Mass Tragedy Sparks a Bicycle Boom in Brazil

Not sure if this was a factor in this victim’s wreck, but it is a major cause of motor vehicle wrecks around here. Injured Perth cyclist urges road users to put phones down

Now this is what I call a bike ride! Adventurous NYC Citi Bike Winds Up On Long Island There have been a lot of OOP Citi Bike stories on Gothamist lately…

And is there hope for the world? Will Electric Car Drivers Respect Bicycle Commuters?

And those are all the links that gave me fits or giggles, except the web comics, those would take to long to load into the post 🙂
