Really want/need to get my neck rubbed, and the Feed

I’m working around “Arthur, Arthur Dent” as much as I can, and constantly working my neck to extend my range of motion, but DAAAaaaannnnng! do I need a massage right now… I need to get out and pay some things tomorrow, so I might get it done then. It’s not like the problem will go away by itself overnight. Working on the blog does not help matters any, also. My posture while typing is practically guaranteed to cause a neck problem from supporting my head while I type.

And this just in Yr Fthfl Srvnt was declared Next City’s Smartest Reader of the Day yesterday for my comment on the Seattle commuter dilemma.

Up first because of the many links to the story, and because of the high WTF factor involved. Pedestrian killed by falling hydro pole following collision in Concord and Cyclist killed after pole topples in collision of 2 cars also Toronto man charged after cyclist killed in Vaughan crash This was a serious level of pinball wreck that got both cyclists almost square on, as you can see from the crushed bicycles in the pictures with the articles. From watching the videos it seems the cyclists were waiting at the corner for the light to change when the wreck began and dodged one of the cars only to be crushed by the falling power pole. The bike that I assume belonged to the fatality victim was caught right in front of the seat, I can’t tell where the other bike was struck because it was removed from under the pole to treat one of the victims.

Still feeling the high a little bit, and the Feed

I’m still feeling the high a little bit from the SCOTUS decisions last week on gay marriage and the ACA, and every time I log onto Facebook to see if there are any links not in the Feed it’s like I took another toke on the bong. I’m going on distant memory here because I found out that my particular brain chemistry and wiring is not compatible with pot back in 1977, but this is kinda what that felt like back then. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with the “Gay Marriage Challenge” page as it has been rendered moot by the SCOTUS last week. I mean the prize has been removed so why still play the game?

On the other decision, the ACA subsidy decision, I can’t tell you how relieved I am that one went the way it did. I mean the policy I have now is about as close to single payer health care as you can get in this country when you factor in the subsidy, but without the subsidy the premium is about 25% more than the combined household income here at Casa de El Poeta, and the OOP limit just about broke the bank here, just for my condition. We still have Mrs. the Poet to get repaired…

And I’m running late again today as I had to finish food shopping when transportation was made available when my son came over to do laundry. It’s cheaper for him to drive over to Casa de El Poeta and use our machine than it is to feed quarters into the machines in the laundry room at his apartment, and he takes us grocery shopping when he does his laundry.

A road hazard that thankfully is confined to the Deep South. Cyclists Injured in Crash After Slipping on Gator Carcass on Road in Weston this, too Alligator remains cause six cyclist pile up, leaves man fighting for life in Florida I think the Road.cc article is conflating the wreck that killed the gator and sent a motorcyclist sliding down the road with the later wreck that just injured a few cyclists with nothing really more serious than a broken collarbone.

In that there is not much difference between walking and riding a bike in TX.

NYC has a car problem, still. NYPD: Help Us Find This SUV Driver Who Hit A 7-Yr-Old Yep, serious car troubles you got there. Might want to do something about that. This does not exactly count as “something” in that nothing was done, but as they were trying to eviscerate a law to protect people with right of way, nothing is better than doing something bad. Advocates, Mayor de Blasio Fend Off TWU Attack on Traffic Safety Laws I urge a compromise, instead of arresting and jailing the driver that hits someone with right of way in a crosswalk or bike lane just on the spot cancel their driver’s license. Put a punch through the expiration date so it can still be used as an ID but if you can’t control your vehicle so that you can prevent hitting someone minding their own business, then you can’t drive, both in the legal and physical senses.

If it didn’t require the cyclist to have died first this would be good news from MO. Felony charge filed in year-old case of Ozark teen killed on bicycle The victim was in his last year of the IB program, a HS curriculum that would be valid in almost any country in the world. That takes smarts and commitment, and the bozo with an SUV took that away from not just his parents but from everybody. Kids like that change the world, and now he won’t have the chance to try.

This sounds like a rough event. St. Charles cyclist dies after collapsing during Bike MS event

This looks like another infrastructure-related wreck. Update: Cyclist critical after crash with dump truck The route was the least-stressful way of getting across the Interstate but requires drivers to slow down and pay attention. Obviously that is too great a price to ask from motor vehicle operators. Another contributing factor was the nature of the business the weapon vehicle was involved in. Local drivers like this dump truck driver are paid by the run rather than by time or mileage, encouraging drivers to keep their speed as high as possible to get as many runs per day as possible so as to pay off the fixed costs and maybe make a little money on the day. One thing I’m extremely glad about for this particular article and comments, nobody expected a styrofoam hat to make any difference in surviving a dump truck running over you.

Electric vehicles will help, renewable fuels will help, but we really need to get away from the automobile lifestyle. And I am aware of the irony in that statement as I build the Sprint-T. I like cars, I just don’t like what cars have done to the world.

Home maintenance and hot rod engineering on a Wreck-Free Sunday

I just got done replacing the doorknobs on every entry door in the house as we had 2 out of 3 fail and become unlockable this week. So I had a gift card to Lowe’s from one of my non-writing gigs sitting around, that I used to buy 3 mid-level security locks on Friday, then spend about 40 minutes on the first lock and another 40 total on the next two swapping out the locks. That means Mrs. the Poet won’t be able to get in the house when she gets home unless I leave the door unlocked except for the deadbolt. As for what caused the lock failure, I’m thinking it might be that they are the original locks installed when the house was built back in 1985, and they are worn out. I mean seriously the individual parts work just fine separately but put them together in the door and you get a latch that jams and doesn’t latch. Well I spent $55 of my gift card to buy new locks and just over an hour installing them in the doors.

I’m currently working on the design for the brake bracket for the front because the rear bracket is a buy and bolt on but this is a unique application for the front brakes. The Wide 5 hub and the four-piston caliper on the early Ford spindle axle are very uncommon, and always done with custom parts. I can think of only 3 cars running this combination since I started reading hot rod and custom car magazines back in the late 1960s, and none with the size disc I will be running on the Sprint T. I will be putting a 12.19″ disc inside a 15″ wheel which will just fit with the caliper I chose, the AFCO F88 for a .810″ thick rotor. So I have been using a rear axle bracket for the caliper with a known center distance (for welding the bracket to a 3″ diameter rear axle tube with a 11.75″ disc) and extrapolating from there for the 12.19″ disc and the larger (5.5″) flange on the early Ford spindle. And this is what I do to relax from writing about bicycles.

Yesterday’s D&D session was held in my living room, and was the “kinky” game, the one where sex is a weapon for social interaction and we have pages of special rules for sex. Basically this is what you would get if you crossed D&D with a porn movie. Since I try to keep sexual things out of the blog I can’t report much about what I did except that my character leveled up again because of the CR of the enemies we went up against this session. I mean seriously this could have been another TPK and reset to the previous save point that’s how dangerous and numerous the monsters were in this session.

And I have managed to feed myself again this week, not that I’m any kind of chef or anything. I just managed to not give myself food poisoning so far. 😛 Today was easy because we had potluck for lunch and dinner at the church, to which I brought my famous-at-the-church beans and rice. I have been keeping a sink with soapy water sitting waiting for dirty dishes and so far I have been keeping ahead of the dishes without running water every time I had a dish that needed cleaning. Even with everybody from the D&D game having a clean glass for their beverage of choice I still managed to keep ahead of the dirty dishes.

Just as I was finishing the post the Sprint Cup race in Sonoma finished, with “gimpy” Kyle Busch winning the race. I used quotes because Kyle had that horrific wreck in Daytona at the beginning of the season where he broke his leg and the ankle on the other leg and had to spend weeks in the hospital and more time getting rehab to restore strength and range of motion in his legs and here he is at the end of the first half of the season winning a road course race, the kind of race that is the hardest on a driver’s legs on the Sprint Cup circuit.

And it’s almost time for evening services, so I’m cutting this off.

I feel like I got hit with a truck again, and the Feed

My son couldn’t get over here to do grocery day yesterday, so I had to grab the old ALICE ruck and walk up to the store myself. This is one reason why I need to recover as fast as I can and get back on Francis/es, so I can go back to doing the grocery shopping on my own without having to have someone drive me there and back. I only got the items I’m about out of, milk, yogurt, soda, and bread. Well, except for the bread all of those items were pretty massive, and I made the mistake of combining a trip to the hardware store two blocks up the road to pick up new door knobs and locks to replace the ones that just broke this morning. Anyone remember that song from “Hee Haw” about bad luck? Yeah, they could put a few verses in there for me. Anyway I had a gallon of milk, 2 2-liter bottles of generic soda, 4 pounds of yogurt, a bottle of beer, three doorknob sets, a front spindle to a 1937 Ford and 8 stainless steel bolts to fit the steering arm holes on the spindle (which I brought to the hardware because I needed to make sure the bolts fit), and two loaves of bread. And now I wanna lie down and have a nap. Or something. Yeah, something because as I was getting up from my desk to have that little lie-down my back decided “This would be the perfect time to seize up!” so it did. And that was about two hours ago and I haven’t even started to filter links, so here’s to working through pain. Except it doesn’t really “hurt” as much as “not work right”.

And before I forget THANK YOU SCOTUS!!!! for making marriage equality the law of the land. This isn’t like Roe v Wade where women got control over doing something that they would really rather not do if circumstances were different, this is people in love doing what people in love do, getting married. So get out there and get married to the person you love. I charge competitive rates and can do Wiccan and Klingon rituals (but I have to find a new priestess for the Klingon ritual, my last one has gone to Sto-Vo-Kor). Contact me if you are in the DFW area and need to get a religious service done. I guess this means I will have to take down the Gay Marriage Challenge page as not only was nobody able to convince me that same-sex marriage was bad, but neither were they able to convince the SCOTUS.

The big story as far as links are concerned is the UK driver getting arrested for murder in the death of a cyclist who was hit-and-run earlier in the week. Investigation into Harworth cyclist death becomes murder probe and Police name man charged with cyclist Richard Pencott’s murder as family pay tribute also UPDATE: Police arrest man on suspicion of murder after cyclist killed in Harworth not done yet Man arrested following death of cyclist Not a whole lot to say in this one because of UK media laws, but arrested for murder is really something. It has been frequently said in both the UK and this country that if you want to commit a random act of murder just get in a car and drive until you see a cyclist to run over, then claim momentary blindness after the fact. Until I saw this I would have said killing a cyclist was a “perfect crime” as it seldom gets prosecuted, and even when it is prosecuted convictions are few and far between, and when convicted the “sentences” are laughably lenient, mostly community service. But when you structure community service correctly it can be a great deterrence against the perpetrator ever doing it again, because they won’t have much free time to commit another vehicular assault. Not much of a deterrence to others, but that one will never hit another cyclist. Are you kidding me? Man charged with murder after cyclist dies in collision

Our Daily Ted, part one. Morning Links: Metro commits to DTLA bikeshare, US pros swear they’re clean, and $50K reward for fatal hit-and-run Even Ted has a link to the UK murder arrest.

And Daily Ted, part two. Update: Arrest made in horrifying high-speed Highland Park fatal hit-and-run If the road diet planned for the street where the cyclist was killed had been allowed to go through the driver would not have been able to reach anywhere near the speed he was going when he hit the cyclist. And now I see they caught the guy who was still drunk 4 hours after hitting the cyclist, which means he was super drunk at the time of the crime. They found pieces of the victim still on the car when they arrested the driver. More Man arrested after bicyclist is killed in hit-and-run in Highland Park Gil Cedillo is an accessory to this crime.

So, NYPD, how is that Vision Zero thing going for you? Issuing lots of tickets for people running down people in the crosswalk or bike lanes? NYPD: Drivers Killed 18 Pedestrians and Cyclists in May, and Injured 1,262 So, that would be a “no” on tickets for people hit crossing in the crosswalk or riding in the bike lanes.

What is wrong with drivers in AZ? Truck runs into four cyclists Seriously to hit 4 cyclists at once in front of witnesses (oncoming traffic) and scatter them “like popcorn”, is either attempted murder or someone that needs to never drive again.

More on Google trying to make Silicon Valley more like Amsterdam or Copenhagen. Google’s bike plan aims to turn Silicon Valley into the next Copenhagen $5 million seems like a lot of money, and it is, but for the number of communities they are talking about and the spread they have to cover because of sprawl, it’s a very large drop in a fairly large bucket. To extend the metaphor, they have covered the bottom of the bucket, but have a long way to go to fill it.

When you have a memorial ride for just the cyclists killed in the last two weeks, there is something terribly wrong with the infrastructure. Local Cyclists To Ride For Those Who Died In The Past Two Weeks

Oh the horror! Most area cyclists aren’t wearing helmets while riding, Statistics Canada says Windsor area cyclists are riding at about 21% helmets, while Victoria are riding with 83% helmets. So Victoria riders have how much lower head injury statistics than Windsor? Any? Buehler?

Road.cc looks at the KSI stats and comes to the same conclusion I did: UK drivers everywhere are prats. DfT admits “ever increasing problem with pedal cyclist casualties” as serious injuries rise 8 per cent Cycling increased 3.8% but serious injury went up 8%? Yep, your drivers are crap. Or maybe your roads are crap and having mediocre drivers isn’t helping any. But yeah something somewhere along the line is crap and people are getting permanently injured because of it.

Perhaps the problem is a lack of enforcement? Campaign for ‘properly enforced’ speed limits after cyclist killed in collision

Sisyphus has a stone, cyclists have politicians. Devon MPs spearhead cyclist safety campaign

And in the meantime we get things like this. Alan Cronin: Man in court charged with death by dangerous driving after cyclist killed

Last link tonight is from Oz again. Motorists, cyclists all need re-education Some cyclists don’t know the rules, but all cyclists are just doing their best to “not get hit”. So the education really needs to be on drivers so they can Know when cyclists are riding according to the laws and not hit them.

And I’m ready to go to bed, or at least lie down for a bit and try to relax.

Billed @€0.02, Opus the extremely happy about the SCOTUS marriage decision…

I’m not dead yet, and the Feed

Here it is day two of living alone without even a cat to keep an eye on me and I’m still alive. 😀 If the blog goes off the air more than the regularly scheduled breaks on Saturday then you’ll know what happened. But I really don’t think there will be any problem with maintaining life support here at Casa de El Poeta. One of the things I have been doing is leaving dishwater in the sink all day so that food doesn’t get dried to the plates and silverware and so I don’t have to run a sink full of water for a plate and a glass and a fork, saving water. One thing we are going to check on this vacation is how much more electricity and water gets used when Mrs. the Poet is here and constantly cleaning up things instead of letting things accumulate to where it can all be done at once. This will take place over a full billing cycle from the electric and water people, so a valid comparison can be made. This will be interesting to see.

Up first is yesterday’s Daily Ted as he posted after I got done filtering. Morning Links: Brake-checking driver harasses cyclist; curb-jumping drivers don’t get Redondo bike lanes

From NYC they caught the woman in that video from a couple days back who ran over a man and got out to look at the body, then got back in her car and left. Woman Arrested After Running Over Elderly Man, Getting Out To See Him Bleeding, Then Driving Away She hit him, stopped and backed off the body, got out to look at the body, then drove away to leave him to die in the street. Also from NYC, a guy is just sitting waiting for the bus when all of a sudden there is a car on his head. Vietnam Vet Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver While Waiting For Staten Island Bus The driver of the weapon vehicle was cut off by a left cross driver and then lost control of her vehicle because SHE WAS DRUNK AT 1300. Apparently riding around stupid rednecks is dangerous. Cyclists nervous after several deaths in South MississippiCyclists should be treated like people, not animals” Hell treated like an animal would be a step up, at least people stop when they hit an animal. As pointed out in the article there are two problems here, people who don’t know the laws, and LEO who won’t enforce the laws. And then there is the complete and utter lack of any infrastructure other than the Natchez Trace Parkway federal bike route, and a short bike path connecting some casinos on the Gulf.

And another report that UK drivers are not improving, but their cars are. Cycle serious injuries rise 8% in 2014 Overall killed on the roads goes down, cyclists and pedestrians KSI goes up (again), what other conclusion could be drawn?

More good news from the UK. Revealed: Birmingham’s most dangerous roads for cyclists All those people getting killed just trying to get from A to B… Well not ALL of them were trying to get from A to B, some were riding for “fun”, just like some people driver for “fun”.

PICTURED: Hundreds protest at Bank junction after death of cyclist Ying Tao who was hit by tipper truck Well they have attracted the attention of the media, at least. And some people are just “not nice”. Motorcyclist refuses to stop engine during silence for dead cyclist

Presented without additional comment. Widow of cyclist killed by Crossrail lorry considering civil action after driver found not guilty of causing death by careless driving

More on that government report in Oz that initially I only found out about the “cell phone” provisions mentioned. Turns out there was a whole lot more. Report to VicRoads recommends cyclists be blameless in any crash with a driver After checking out police reports and that wreck study done with the video cameras the researchers decided that cyclists wer so seldom at fault that drivers should have to prove that a wreck was the cyclist’s fault instead of allowing the only witness left alive to come up with a song and dance about “coming out of nowhere”.

And cue the vitriolic outrage from drivers. YOUR SAY: Should drivers always be held accountable for crashes involving cyclists? Arrgle garble licenses, rego, insurance, road tax, suicidal Lycra louts terrorizing grannies in the crosswalk!!!!!1!!!!!!!11!one!!

Will cars go out of fashion? Buying a car could soon be a thing of the past, and Ford is desperate to find what’s next Oh that I could stay healthy long enough to enjoy that!

Last link, there was an e-assist world championships? E-bike… Worlds?! The bikes were EU street legal, which meant that most of the time the riders were on their own as the speeds were too high to get assist, or the trail too steep for the motor to do anything except carry its own weight. Good for testing the athletes, not so much for improving the bicycles.

And I’m all done tonight.

There are two huge stories in the UK today. This is the one that makes me slightly more angry. Gran died after reckless cyclist ploughed into her on BMX bike he pulled from skip and Cyclist, 21, who knocked down and killed grandmother, 73, while riding BMX bike he pulled out of a skip is jailed Why does this one make me angry? Because the cyclist is going to be spending a year in jail longer than most drivers get for killing pedestrians or cyclists.

This is the other story that makes me almost as angry. Pictured: Newly-married cyclist killed in London lorry crash and Cyclist, 26, killed in Bank tipper truck crash was newly married Oxford graduate also Cyclist killed at ‘hectic’ seven-way Bank junction in London also this Why are female cyclists more vulnerable to London’s lorries?

I rode a bike today, and the Feed

I pumped up the tires on Francis/es and took a lap around the block to see how my neck is doing. And let’s just say my neck is doing better but still not ready for prime time yet. One lap around the block is about all I can manage without a helmet on today. I’m still running into the limits of motion where I can’t contract that muscle under “Arthur, Arthur Dent” enough to quite get my head up enough to see where I’m going yet. It pretty much takes all I can do just to get up enough to see, then by the time I get 3/4 of the way around the block it’s exhausted to the point that I can’t even hold it up enough to sit up straight… So time to dust off the welder and my fine detail cutting tools and build that stem extension.

Graphic Video Shows Drivers Running Over Man In Crown Heights, Driving Away The victim in this case violated NY’s door law, standing next to the car for too long but at any rate this comment seems to capture the emotions of the incident. A second part of the problem is the initial weapon vehicle has huge front blind spots, and should never have been allowed in a city in the first place.

Looking at another long day, and the Feed

Well, the computer crashed twice during filtering. So I know it’s going to be a long day when that happens. Up first because the injured (killed?) cyclist was pretty much ignored in the other casualties and because the number of dead and injured in this one incident was so high. Either the cyclist was not among the named dead or the fact that the dead person was the cyclist mentioned earlier did not make it into the article.

Happy Father’s Day on a Wreck-Free Sunday

Happy day to all you (other) fathers and dads out there. I will be going out to have a late lunch/early dinner with the kids who still remain in this country after I do the blog, so I will probably be cutting this short.

On the Wide 5 to early Ford spindle adaptor, I did some preliminary stress calculations and the only Al alloy that would not fail in use after a couple of years costs like $200 each for a hunk of billet big enough to use for the adaptor, or I can change the design so that instead of being structural the adaptor just fills space between the bearings in the Wide 5 hub and the Ford spindle and the cost of the billets goes down to $50 for the pair or $25 each. That’s a huge cost saving at a weight increase of about 2 ounces or just over 0.1 pounds. So, the inside diameter of the new design adaptor goes from the OD of the grease seal run with a step to the ID of the Ford inner bearing (1.189″) that runs cylindrical to the shoulder for the Ford outer bearing (about 3″ in length) then a step down to the ID of the Ford outer bearing (0.75″) that runs two threads up the threaded area of the Ford spindle (another 1″ for a total of 4″ from the inner bearing shoulder) and goes straight out to the size of the spindle washer on the spindle nut kit, then it tapers out to the outside of the outside bearing of the Wide 5 hub next to the washer and lock nut on the adaptor (4.6″ from the inner bearing shoulder) then straight out to the end of the adaptor at 0.250″ wall thickness so it doesn’t fail at the threads (1.375″ ID). I have been looking at other Wide 5 spindles on the market and not all of them are the nearly 7″ from spindle face to the end of the threads that the initial drawing I looked at implied. The original design was from the late 1930s/early ’40s and used double locknuts to retain the bearings on the spindle, while modern usage is to use a single nut that locks to a tabbed washer via machine screws in the outer face of the nut. So on these hubs from the inside out you got outer bearing, then a tabbed washer to keep any torques from the bearing trying to undo the spindle nut, then the spindle nut, then another tabbed washer with slots that small screws go through that screw into the spindle nut to prevent the spindle nut from coming loose. The older design was bearing, tabbed washer, spindle nut, tabbed washer, second spindle nut, then enough clean threads so that you got a good accurate torque value on that second nut. Now I only have to leave enough threads that the one nut has a good torque value. So shorter adaptor and I made up the couple of ounces I added by reducing the ID of the adaptor so that it only acts as a spacer rather than a structural member. I win (for some values of “win”).

On the way to the Solstice Service last night I had a stitch let loose from my neck rather suddenly, as in it felt like I had been hit on the back of my neck and I felt/heard a “thunk” when it let go. Now that I have had some sleep I have a smidge more range of motion in my neck and a tiny bit less discomfort at the end of my range of motion than I did before the stitch let loose. Still that was a disconcerting way for a stitch to go away. It was doubly so as I was crossing the street when it let go.

And my ride to Father’s Day dinner will be here shortly, so I have to quit running on at the keyboard now.

Cresskill students pay tribute to classmate killed by tractor-trailer Looking at the scene I don’t see what there is to investigate. The semi was at a stop sign while the cyclist was riding down a through street, and then the semi pulled in front of the cyclist when he was too close to stop. The weapon vehicle did not even clear the stop sign, much less get all the way into the intersection, before the cyclist hit it. So, what are they trying to prove? That the cyclist somehow committed suicide the day before summer break? That makes sense how?

When one of the winners of the UK version of “Survivor” says London is “too dangerous”, you have a problem with your infrastructure. Ben Fogle: Riding a bicycle in London has become too dangerous Yep, London has definitely gotten to the point where heads will roll unless something substantive is done.

Case in point to accentuate the preceding paragraph. Calls for safety review after second accident at junction where unicyclist was trapped under bus Less than a month after a highly publicised wreck involving a circus performer commuting by unicycle, a more “normal” cyclist was also hit and injured in the same intersection. Naturally this is being blamed on the infrastructure this time as having two wrecks in a month is beyond “coincidence”. The victim in this wreck reported several near-misses previous to getting hit this time.

Another report on the cyclist injured by a garbage truck (At least I think it was a garbage truck). London cyclist seriously injured in skip lorry collision Seems to be the same company as one that killed a cyclist a few years back not too far from the location of this wreck. Comments with the article seem to suggest that this particular class of truck (skip lorry) has a significantly higher incident rate with cyclists. Also pointed out in the comments was the fact that of the 6 cyclist fatalities in London this year 5 were female and all 6 were HGV making left turns (UK version of the “right hook”) through the cyclists. Not stated was how many of those cyclists were in bike lanes or trying to reach the ASL at the head of the queue for the intersection… This is a problem with much of UK infrastructure.

And another report that vehicle deaths and injury are declining while cyclists and pedestrians are killed and injured unabated. Number of cyclists injured on Teesside roads up by almost a fifth Drivers and infrastructure are still as bad as ever.

And as the protester’s sign says, another death, another protest in London. Pledge over road deaths Well, lessee. The last 6 deaths, and more than 40% of the previous year’s deaths, were the result of HGV hitting cyclists during rush hours. So how about a requirement that all HGV have to be parked off the main roads during rush hours. Not banned from the roads, just, parked during morning and afternoon rushes?

I’m detecting a bit of bias from this “news” outlet, but really the subject of this video is rather stupid. Look, no brains!
