Getting ready for the long night blogging and the Feed

I read the comics, went out and had a little fun with friends, talked to Mrs. the Poet and had dinner, and now I get to open the Feed folder. It smells (metaphorically) of burning sulphur, I really don’t want to read the links and I haven’t even opened the first report yet.

Up first are links to a cyclist literally hanging on for dear life. Vancouver Island cyclist survives terrifying ride wedged below moving semi trailer and Island cyclist clung to underside of moving truck to avoid being crushed I can’t say for sure but the narrative of the wreck sounds a lot like a right hook, possibly caused when the truck moved left to make room for a wide right turn and either failed to signal or the cyclist was not where he could see the signal. Quick thinking on the part of the cyclist to grab whatever was there to grab and hope it held up to the grab.

Interesting data buried in these links. Most cyclists hospitalized for injuries are over age 45, study finds and Bike injuries are on the rise, but there’s still reason to ride Did you see it? “Cyclists’ arms and legs were injured most often, but the percentage of injured cyclists with head injuries increased from 10% to 16%.” You would think that with the percentage of cyclists using helmets going up the percentage of head injuries would be trending down instead of up 60%. It’s almost as if bicycle helmets were essentially useless in preventing injury except to a small area of the head in a specific direction of impact that does not happen very often in the real world.

More information about the cyclist killed when a distracted driver ran into a group of 3 cyclists on a clear highway with excellent sight lines. Funeral arrangements announced for Birmingham cyclist killed in Blount County and Group holding ‘Ride to Remember’ to pay tribute to local cyclist struck and killed on Hwy 75 Not much I can add to the information presented in the links.

Still in the multiple links category is this wreck in NYC. Cyclist Struck, Critically Injured In North Corona, Queens and Cyclist In Critical Condition After Getting Hit By Driver In Queens The wreck was at a place where a MUP crosses the onramp, one of several such crossings on this expressway. The designer needs to be shot, run over with a truck, and then hanged while getting hit in the nuts with a sledgehammer.

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: The Mobility Plan battle isn’t over yet, new ARTCRANK website, and rear-end wrecks are most deadly

And Bikeyface says we need to redesign our cities for everyone to use, not just cars. Redesign Notice the first panel with the semi. What is that semi going to do and will it cross her path while she’s still there, a callback to the cyclist right hooked on Mass. Avenue recently.

While we are talking about Bikeyface and her MA hangouts, here’s an article about them. The roads, not Bikeyface. A Bikeless, Car-Filled Boston Is a Past Worth Leaving Behind

NYPD shows why they are hated, again. While Drivers Kill People in Crosswalks, 19th Precinct Cracks Down on Bikes

At least the air is cleaner out in NM. Cyclist injured in hit-and-run on Paseo del Pueblo, Taos police say Wow, unlicensed, uninsured, and wanted on an outstading warrant. No wonder she ran. But if she had just been looking where she was going then she would still be free.

More on both of those wrecks a few miles apart in CA. Family struggles with loss of Modesto cyclist killed in hit-and-run

Still no word on why the victim was trying to cross the freeway. Coroner IDs Cyclist Killed on Freeway in Long Beach

There is a one man war against Ghost Bikes in NC. Third Durham ‘ghost bike’ removed after complaint His name is Khalil Nasir, and he hates to be reminded that motor vehicles kill.

Another cyclist is injured in a drive-by shooting. Woman shot while riding her bike in Chesapeake Dudes, if you wanted to kill her you could have just hit her with the car and stopped a couple of blocks later and claimed you didn’t see her, a streetlight blinded you or something. Now you didn’t kill her, you got cops looking for you everywhere, and things are generally not going to go in your favor.

The poor doggie… Republican state Sen. Kerry Roberts injured in dog attack while riding bicycle I know nothing of the reputation of this guy, but it can’t be healthy for the dog to bite a republican in TN. Nevermind, I just read his FB page, it was definitely bad for the dog to bite this guy. I hope they can save the doggie.

Bad infrastructure can kill as quickly as getting hit by a car. Quick thinking of Forest Park gardener helps save an injured bicyclist Nothing on why the victim fell off the bike path.

Well this was not as successful as the other story fro West Canuckistan. Cyclist killed in Surrey traffic accident At this point the narrative points to a punishment pass or just hitting the cyclist from behind.

Are they finally getting the message in the UK judiciary? Woman jailed for year for hitting cyclist as she texted while driving near North Leigh A year in jail and a further 3 not allowed to drive after she gets out. That’s progress.

A UK widow says the infrastructure is still crap years after her husband was killed. Cyclist’s widow calls for more bike lanes after fatal rush hour crash

And even though the infrastructure is crap, it’s still not that bad to bike in London. This Is What It’s Like To Be A Female Cyclist In London

Last link, a highly fictionalized account of the semi-legal bike racing scene in LA. Ride, hustle, kill, repeat: the underground cycle gangs of Los Angeles

OK current time is 0449, I have to be up and showered by 1030. No time to proof or tag, just make sure I didn’t bollux the links.
