My fingers are freezing, and the Feed

I don’t know why, but for some reason my fingers are painfully cold. The rest of me is quite comfortable but my fingers feel like I have been swimming in ice water.

I took the ham bone from the Thanksgiving feast home and used it to make a pot of beans today, and they were pretty good beans if I do say so myself. This one was a “thrown together” meal with a little of this and a little of that and a dab of something else. The ham had enough salt so that I didn’t need to add any to the pot. Throw some garlic powder in and add some cayenne pepper and a tiny touch of black pepper to get the flavor going and voila! Dinner.

Heard from the surgeon’s office today, and the Feed

The earliest date they could schedule a consult was 5/14 because the doctor is “overbooked” through then at the office I can get to and I can’t get to the offices where he’s not overbooked. The thing is this doctor is serving a very large area, his territory extends from Rowlett all the way to Greenville. That used to be sparsely settled until recently when it became the newest outer ring suburb of Hell. This is another symptom of the severe sprawl facing the Metromess, which is now more populated than the entire state of MA and almost the same area.

Up first an example of why the Dutch have the best bicycle infrastructure. Dutch provinces to examine ‘rapid’ cycle paths What is being proposed here are real “cycle superhighways” that are grade separated even from other bicycle infrastructure, for riders and pedal-powered vehicles that cruise significantly faster than the 15-20 km/hr that cyclists average around town. I spent 3 hours paying the storage unit fee, and the Feed

I had to pay the rent on the storage unit today, which is a pain now that I can’t ride my bike there and back. The place is only just over a mile and a quarter away which is a bit too far for my bum leg to walk there and back. So I had to take the bus downtown then catch the bus to the storage unit which ended up taking twice as long as it would to just walk there. I was going to catch the bus back downtown and then the other bus from downtown back home, but the receipt for the payment took too long to print out and while it was printing the bus back downtown went by, so I walked home instead. My leg was complaining the last half mile, but I walked home 15 minutes faster than I would have left the station had I caught the bus. So I swapped pain for time today.

Strange news from the hormone fronts, and the Feed

I got some good news from the LRK about my testosterone levels. Since they had to adjust my BP meds as the result of one of the previous suppliers dropping out my testosterone levels had to be tested before my prescription for HRT could be renewed after the last time it ran out. I ran out about 3 weeks prior to my visit, so supposedly whatever my levels were would be reasonably similar to what they would be completely without HRT, and the test results were, incredibly, slightly lower than normal. That is much higher than expected after being on HRT for close to two years, which should have resulted in zero testosterone. But my healing ability seems to have kicked in and caused my hormone levels to be in the normal range for a man of my age not taking testosterone antagonists. The doctor is at a loss to explain this beyond my previously demonstrated ability to heal from injury and illness… Now all I need to do is wait on the PCP assigned by my Obamacare provider to give me a referral to a surgeon to take this lump off the back of my neck so I can get back on a bike and be able to see where I’m going. The word from the PCP is he will be taking more new patients after January 1. I have put in a request for an appointment ASAP.

Up first is a legal infrastructure report from Houston. Trial begins in cyclist’s hit-and-run death Notice the “rapist’s defence” blaming the victim for the clothing she was wearing. This has got to stop, the driver did not hit-and-run because the cyclist was wearing dark clothing, the driver hit-and-ran because the driver had no morals and left the victim to die in the street. The clothing the victim was wearing should have no more to do with that than the clothing of a rape victim.

And if it hadn’t been for the TX trial this would have been my leadoff link. Cy Vance Files Homicide Charge in Lower East Side Pedestrian Death This is noteworthy for two reasons, the first being that filing criminal charges in motor vehicle deaths is rare to the point of being mythical in NYS, there being only 2 such charges in more than 150 pedestrian deaths in 2013. The second reason is charges were filed so quickly in the process and there were no aggravating circumstance like DUI, while the victim was a homeless man staying in a shelter nearby.

If there is any doubt that people’s lives are secondary to corporate profits… Lorry safety change faces 10-year delay I have a compromise: Let the manufacturers have their delay of safety regulations, on the provision that any cyclists killed or injured by trucks made during the delay are compensated 100% for medical bills, lifetime lost income, and pain and suffering, or their heirs. Sure you can delay meeting safety regulations, so long as they pay for the damages caused by not meeting those regulations.

First of all, I have good news. That hat I bought online has finally made it to the house. My Steezyworkz.com custom creation finally showed up this afternoon.

They also threw in a T-shirt visible in the background laying on the bed, because the order took so long to fill. I am so happy that this is finally here. It was sent 2nd day air, that took 4 days to get out of NJ and another 2 days to get out of the DFW sorting office (can you tell I take package tracking seriously?). I got some kind of bug, and the Feed

I have some kind of upper respiratory bug that is making my nose run and gooping up my eyes, and it is aggravating me no end. I mean an unending nasal drip just getting in my moustache means I have to wash my face several times a day (yuck!). The tenant and I are going to a social gathering tonight, I’m mostly going to make the tenant feel more secure because she was sexually assaulted at another gathering of a different group. I think some people feel I’m somewhat physically imposing in spite of not being very tall (5’8″). I’m almost that big around (48″ chest) and have wide shoulders and very narrow hips. I look like I have been hitting the weights for years, when in reality it is pure skeleton. I don’t have lats, I have ribs and likewise I don’t have huge pecs I have a depressed sternum that makes my ribs bulge out. I shouldn’t complain because it was mostly my skeleton that allowed me to survive getting hit 3 times by pickup trucks. I mean I have what has been described as “concrete bones” by an expert on the subject (the tech running the bone-scan thingy at the doctor) and I’m sure that had something to do with not getting my head bashed in when the football player I dissed for copying the wrong answers off my science test hit me with the baseball bat…

Got my toes done, and the Feed

I think most of you are aware that between the ravages of age and the damages I suffered in the wreck I can’t cut my toenails on the last two toes of my left foot. That means I have to get someone else to do it for me, and the easiest way to do that is to go to my local nail spa and get a pedicure. They have gotten used to me there and sometimes just for giggles I get the whole enchilada and let them paint my toenails. Today I left part of the figurative enchilada on the figurative plate, and came home without any polish on my toes. To give an idea of how ingrained in my psyche not spending money until there is no alternative is, my shoes fit sorta loose now…

There is a new conspiracy theory out there. Did Bono Really Crash A Bike In Central Park? The crux of the argument is CP on a Sunday is a pretty crowded place, and just about everybody in NYC has a phone with a camera on it, yet there is zilch about the wreck from witnesses on any of the social media, or even “Is this Bono?” pictures on Twitter or FB. Given the number of pictures and video posted of Michael Brown getting killed, someone who wasn’t even on the radar until after he was killed, the fact that a celebrity like Bono can get that kind of damages without any pictures of someone trying to help, or even of the ambulance taking him away seems rather odd. I just did an image search and there is nothing of Bono in Central Park in the last 6 months. The only images I could find were of the free concert U2 did in CP a while back, and the tree that killed Sonny Bono while he was skiing many years ago. To quote Alice, “Curiouser and curiouser.” I left a post in a Facebook group devoted to bicycles and bike commuting asking if anyone had any pictures or knew where any pictures of the scene were posted, so I’ll keep y’all posted if I hear anything.

The war of the lumens continues. Try these bright ideas for biking at night. I still think the best thing for making cyclists visible to drivers would be a law requiring all motor vehicles used in a wreck with a pedestrian or cyclist to be crushed and shredded in front of the driver or on national TV if the victim dies, or in other words, hit a pedestrian or cyclist, lose your car. You still have to pay for it, but it will no longer physically exist to be repossessed. That would mean that you would have to pay off the balance immediately… de facto huge fine for hitting a vulnerable road user, payable to the finance company.

More about a friend of the blog who was killed (and even though I know his name and had several conversations about bicycle safety with him I still don’t want to post his name in a link description. Thinking heavy thoughts on Transgender Day of Remembrance, and the Feed

Today is a bit strange for me. I’m not Trans*, I’m not even bi, or gay. But I do have 6 Trans* friends including the couple that is living in my house now. And I read several web comics that are either written and/or drawn by a Trans* person/s, or are about Trans* people, or both. One of them subscribes to this blog (Hi!). So it’s not like this is an invisible world for me, it’s one I interact with several times a month on a personal basis. I’m not Trans*, but I’m part of their world, hopefully one of the better parts. And the statistics on violence against Trans* people, particularly M2F trans people, is just overwhelming. I’m not going to bring up the statistics here in a bike blog, but if you think you have it rough because you ride a bicycle, you don’t know how rough it can get. Sure there are people trying to kill us for existing, just like LGBT people, but they are relatively few in comparison. People are much more likely to kill one of us by “accident” where any hatred is unstated and unknown. People who (that?) kill people for being Trans* will come right out and say so while they try, so you know why you are getting killed, and they will frequently kill in the slowest and most painful method available to them. This is the truth of living in the LGBT world.

Well after that the rest of the post will be just a freaking ray of sunshine up your butts, innit? I hope so, as I go to Filter the Feed now.

More on Bono’s NYC wreck. Bono’s “High Energy” Bike Accident Caused Severe Injuries Turns out it was a bit more than was first released, the most visible of which was a compound fracture of the arm. Either he was going really fast for a guy his age, or what he ran into was going the opposite direction at a moderate speed. The initial report said Bono was trying to avoid another cyclist at the time of the wreck, is it possible he ran into a salmon?
