Still plugging along, and the Feed

OK, tomorrow is the Lab Rat Keeper, and the day after is the consult with the surgeon. There is no suspense about if I’m going to have surgery, only when. I will have a bit of time free tomorrow while I’m out on the road, and I’m contemplating getting a massage to release some of the tension I have been holding in. I haven’t had a massage in months, and you can pretty much tell by my gait and posture. I take my cane with me almost every time I leave the house now so I can try to straighten out and walk upright, but the lump on my neck has been making that difficult. Can’t walk upright when you can’t hold your head up. Anyway, moving on to things that are not me.

Up first is more about the possible murder of a cyclist in Oz. ‘He did not deserve this’: Family grieve cyclist killed in Anakie hit and run also Cyclists ‘stalked’ near Geelong, Victorian police say, as they investigate fatal hit-and-run So, there may be more than one driver targeting cyclists, or they may have caught the guy that did it and he still hasn’t cracked. I’m not sure which is worse.

It didn’t take long for a UK jury to convict and sentence a driver that claimed he thought he hit a garbage can when he hit-and-run a cyclist. Motorist Michael Rollason found guilty of causing cyclist’s death by dangerous driving and Motorist who killed cyclist in hit and run then claimed he hit wheelie bin jailed for seven years and Motorist who killed cyclist in hit and run then claimed he hit a wheelie bin jailed for seven years He got a “lifetime” ban, which in the UK means he can apply for a retest to get his license back 8 years after he gets completely clear of all his prison obligations. That means at least 15 years where we won’t have to worry about his being on the roads to kill another person. The hard part about the driving ban is while the penalty for driving while under the lifetime ban is severe, the likelihood of getting caught without another wreck is close to nil given the sad state of roads policing in the UK (and everywhere else for that matter).

The big US story continues to be the wreck that cost a cyclist’s leg in Portland. Update on SE Powell collision: Driver has 2 careless driving convictions and Mayor mentions protest and Protest on SE Powell slows traffic, draws big crowd also Anti-speeding bill nears vote in Salem as Powell Boulevard protests continue do’t forget this Community supports cyclist who lost leg in SE Portland crash and this Travel time and speed data shows impact of Powell protest last link Protesters call for safety improvements after cyclist seriously injured on SE Powell Boulevard This is as big a thing as I have ever seen coming out of America’s Amsterdam. I think the guy’s leg laying in the middle of the road was the final straw that broke the camel’s back, that and the number of people that saw that dismembered leg in the road. There comes a time when the limits of endurance are reached, then exceeded, and what will push people over the edge is impossible to predict.

From NYC, if you don’t like the way I drive, stay out of the bus shelter on the sidewalk? Cab Driver Crashes Into Midtown Bus Stop Shelter, One Injured So, what can you do to avoid something like this, other than stay the hell outta NYC?

Locally there will be a Bike to Work Day event nearby. BikeDFW and BFR Bike To Work Day Energizer Station – 2015 Because I don’t know what my status will be on Friday I won’t be working the Garland Station site this year. I hope somebody will…

And this makes me jealous about leaving Salt Lake City. 200 West to get bikeway in fall Sharp-eyed readers may recognize this from a link posted a couple of years ago about retrofitting in Dutch infrastructure in the US. That’s the exact same design fitted to the existing 200 West intersections.

Someone responds to an idiot in AZ. Letter, 5/11: Punish drivers, not cyclists

Still in AZ. Save a life: Share the road with cyclists Road, not lane.

Similar advice from PA with their laws. BIKE RIDING SAFETY LAWS FOR CYCLISTS AND DRIVERS I would like to see a change in laws that AFRAP is a law about which LANE to ride in, not which PART of the lane.

And one of the most obvious (to a cyclist) pieces I have ever linked to. When Bikes and Cars Collide, Cyclists Suffer Uh, duh? Person not surrounded by tons of armor more vulnerable than someone who is?

LEO ride to honor their fallen. Police Unity Tour

About the only thing I respect W for. 17 Servicemen and Women Bike 100K on President Bush’s Texas Ranch

And our first Ride of Silence link for the year. Silent rides to honor bicyclists who were injured or died in accidents

And the computer just crashed and ate the post. This was as much as was left.

Another rainy day, and the Feed

We have another rainy day today, which doesn’t break the 5-year drought, but does ease things a bit. The soil is thoroughly saturated and groundwater is getting replenished, and there is enough runoff to put some in the lakes and reservoirs. So the crisis is lessened but not alleviated.

Tomorrow I will be trekking to Plano Cycle, the bike store that is the easiest one for me to get to. I have to claim my Christmas present, and shop for repair parts for Blue. Plus I just like being inside a bike shop, the energy is just so good in there.

Up first is Our Daily Ted, mainly because I wanted to give Ted credit for finding some of the links before I opened my Feed folder. Morning Links: UCI doping report on the dopes running UCI, photos of Paralympic cyclists and Dr. Oz on bikes Yep, at least one link in BikingInLA today was also in my Feed later in the morning.

From NYC, that church just swerved in front of that car. Cops Arrest Driver Who Allegedly Crashed Car Into LI Church Shouldn’t that be classified as a hit-and-run since the driver left the scene? The front of the building sustained heavy damage in the wreck, which just goes along with what I have been saying about cars causing as much destruction as artillery pieces.

After that I think some levity is in order. funny cycling Laugh or not, your choice.

Given the circumstances I would say if the driver was not “distracted” then they need to charge this as a murder. Police: Driver who killed cyclist was likely distracted The passenger stated the driver was calling and texting his girlfriend at the time of the wreck and just before. See what I previously posted about motor vehicles and artillery.

More on the cyclist murdered in the street in the UK. Teenager, 18, charged with murder of 15-year-old cyclist who was stabbed to death in street attack See, attack a cyclist with a knife and get a lucky (or unlucky, depending on your point of view) hit in and they go after you for murder. But attack a cyclist with a motor vehicle and it’s the cyclist’s fault for being in the street to get hit.

More on the cyclist doored in Oz, even though they are running out of things to say on the subject. Thousands ride in moving tribute to cyclist killed on Sydney Rd, Brunswick The first thing authorities did was reduce the speed limit between midnight and 0630 to the same limit as the rest of the day even though the wreck did not take place during that time and the speed of the cyclist and the truck that killed him were not factors in the wreck.

Infrastructure news from FL as attitudes start to turn around. Cyclists deserve to be protected, safe I don’t know what could be done about drivers that just don’t pay attention to the roads while they drive, except to take cars away if they hit somebody. The current fine structure just does not seem to be making an impact on driver behavior. And lifetime bans on driving seem to have zero effect on drivers as they continue to drive in spite of the bans.

UK infrastructure remains as bad as ever, ditto drivers. Cambridgeshire cyclist injuries hit 10-year high A 30% commute share and they still can’t spend any money on not killing or injuring cyclists. They blame the increase of injuries on “more cyclists” not “bad drivers who can’t keep from hitting cyclists”.

From the “please don’t hit the pedestrians” file. Pedestrian takes Ambulance Victoria to court to get name of cyclist who knocked him over in Royal Park Yep “Don’t hit the pedestrians” again.

Someone is starting to get the message “It’s the stupid infrastructure”. Road trauma: Design a big factor in accident statistics Yep, putting through bike lanes on the outside of motor vehicle turn lanes will cause motor vehicles to turn across and over people riding bicycles, among other stupid designs.

Last link is about the MD cyclist killed by a drunk driver who was also texting. AN UNFINISHED RIDE There was information in the article that cyclist used this road preferentially because it was low-speed by US standards and had a painted bike lane. But paint will not keep a drunk and distracted driver from driving in the bike lane.

And those are all the links I have for today. Remember tomorrow’s post will be late as I have to take the bus and train two towns over to access a “local” bike store. I’m trying to figure out what it says that it’s easier to get to Plano than to take the bus to South Garland… Probably that DART sucks.

Strange looking Feed

I was perusing the Feed folder last night (a sort of pre-filter to give me a leg up on the next day’s post) and apparently there was a big wreck in yesterday’s TdF stage, because there was an entire report that had nothing but different reports of many different wrecks on the stage. I usually like this particular report better than the others because it only brings me links to non-fatal bike wrecks, but today it was wall-to-wall TdF. I didn’t watch yesterday’s stage because of running around town and the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona last night. (NASCAR at Daytona with any series is always a blast to watch, because it’s a crap shoot as to who will win. About half the time the driver leading off the third turn ends up finishing third or worse by the time they get to the finish line.) I guess I should mention that yesterday’s errand ride was 7 miles in 98°F temperatures and a level yellow ozone alert, which meant by the time I got home my voice had lost most of its timbre and I felt like a lobster, post pot of boiling water.

Up first because it is literally just down the road from WoaB World HQ in the suburbs of Hell, a child is hit by two vehicles when she can’t stop with her Flintstone brakes. Dallas Child Killed While Riding Bike I don’t blame the driver of the first vehicle, but the second driver was definitely following too close/driving too fast for conditions. As for how to avoid, the cyclist panicked and forgot she had brakes, so more practice time away from motor vehicle traffic for young riders to become used to depending on things like brakes. To prevent, make this practice session part of the elementary school curriculum and put it on the skills test to make sure it gets taught and kids know it.

From the other side of the same state, more on the hit-and-run of a cyclist outside San Antonio. Cyclists invited to doc’s funeral The cyclist had done everything possible to avoid this wreck, it’s all on the driver for this one. Infrastructure would have kept the homicidal maniac behind the wheel away from the cyclist.

More on the 10YO killed in ID. Idaho boy riding bike dies after being hit by SUV and Ten-year-old on bike hit and killed in Meridian also After 10-year-old is killed on bicycle, neighbors grieve boy’s death I noticed they are still trying to place the blame for the death on the kid not wearing a helmet.

More on the Murder of a cyclist in CA. Driver Kills Cyclist: Hit-And-Run Was Intentional Says Eyewitness What can I say about a deliberate attempt to kill a cyclist with a motor vehicle. When they catch this guy I hope they charge him with murder, not a traffic “accident”.

More on another CA hit-and-run. Bicyclist killed in Rancho Santa Fe hit-and-run and Bicyclist Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver Identified The cyclist did everything possible to avoid this wreck, as I posted earlier.

Another link to the memorial ride for Steve Norwick. Memorial Bike Ride for Steve Norwick to be Held Sunday Another CA fatal wreck.

LifeStyle from MA. Bike riders take part in Jim Fund Pan Mass Challenge For readers in the DFW area, this would be like riding from Weatherford to Greenville, except with seafood at the end and not having to cross the free-fire zone through the Mid-Cities.

Infrastructure! from NC in the wake of a fatal wreck blamed on the driver. Mental health director’s death reignites bike-car debate This one has a comments section full of rednecks with zero understanding of the law.

And those are all the links that gave me fits today.
