Want to be a serial killer with no negative repercussions?

Well, you have to use the right weapon.

This was inspired by a report of a driver on his third conviction for misdemeanor manslaughter for hitting cyclists and pedestrians.

Nice weather for Grocery Day, and the Feed

I know it’s a little late now, but I should have tagged the Mini Sprint-T in yesterday’s post since so much of the first paragraph was devoted to it and there was a picture of it in the post. Anywho, we are having a nice spring day out, in the middle of February, in Texas. Birds are singing and I have already seen the crane flies (those things that look like huge mosquitoes) on the storm doors. Climate change! Woo!

I know some people are wondering why I spend so much time on the Mini Sprint-T when I’m a bicycle safety blogger and know how dangerous motor vehicles are around vulnerable users like pedestrians and cyclists? Well one reason is I need to build something. I would prefer to build a car or a recumbent bike but I don’t have the space nor resources to build something like that now. If Dad’s house hadn’t sold for $75K under appraisal I would have a lot more $$ for building the full-size car, but that water is way under the dam now. So I’m working with something I can afford with the resources I have now. I’m solving most of the problems I would face with the Sprint-T while working within my budget for the Mini Sprint-T. Also, model cars are very safe around vulnerable users so long as you don’t step on them. The cars, not the vulnerable users, don’t step on the model cars. You might cut your foot stepping on the model car.

Still in CA. Cyclist struck, injured by WES train in Tualatin When I filtered they were still trying to figure out how he got hit, stating the victim “rode directly into the path” of the train. As I have pointed out numerous times in the past avoiding getting hit by a train is laughingly easy, just don’t be on the tracks when the train gets there. Why this rider didn’t do that is under question at the moment.

More infrastructure in Portland. Opinion: If we’re serious about cycling, let’s get serious about cycling infrastructure

Hit-and-run in PA. Two people were in Jeep at fatal hit-and-run in Upper Milford, police say This is an update on the ICE-assist bike hit head-on by a vehicle cutting the left turn. And my speculation from yesterday was apparently correct that the cyclist was legally lighted at the tine of the wreck. The Street View of the scene shows the cyclist had a through road without a stop sign while the weapon vehicle was facing a stop sign before making that left turn. The really despicable part is they both got out and looked at the victim’s body and mangled bike in the road before leaving him there to die.

What other job could you (almost) kill someone and get a paid vacation. Cambridge officer cited for hit-and-run crash that injured bicyclist Seriously, leave someone to die in the street and get a paid vacation? I suspect DUI was involved, the cop knowing that leaving the scene would get him out of the worst of the charges by preventing testing.

In TN it appears we have a SWCC wreck. Bicyclist Injured On East Main Street After Colliding With Pickup On Tuesday The narrative would also fit with a buzz job or punishment pass that went way bad (for the victim).

I think MT stands for the amount of compassion for the victim in their hearts. Man sentenced to 6 months in jail for killing cyclist in 2014 accident Except no, he wasn’t. He got 90 days in jail and 90 days house arrest, not 6 months in jail. The cyclist is taking a dirt nap while the driver gets only 90 days in jail and another 90 days at home sleeping in his own bed and pooping in his own toilet and eating his own food not bought from the lowest bidder.

Up in West Canuckistan LEO add insult to injury for a salmon cyclist. Cyclist struck, then fined

I hope the cats are happy, and the Feed

After picking up the parts to build the new railing for the church steps, we discovered that the drill bit we used to make the holes in the concrete for the anchors had gone AWOL. After spending almost an hour going through the church tools looking for the bit, we decided that we didn’t have the time to get another bit and install the rail that I had just assembled, so we come back Sunday after morning service and drill holes and pound in anchors then run the nuts and bolt down the rails.

After coming back from the failed attempt to install the rails, I had to walk to the store to buy cat food. “The store” in this case is a mile away, resulting in a 2 mile round trip. On the to the store leg I found some bad infrastructure, beg buttons that failed to trigger the pedestrian crossings, so I called Garland Streets to complain aboutnotify them of the situation. On my return trip all the beg buttons functioned perfectly. So that was a win.

Speaking of win, I bought two quick-picks for the PowerBall tonight, one annual payments and the other cash option. Should I be so lucky as to win tonight there will be a major shift in tone and subject matter for this blog as I will be spending my money on getting bike infrastructure done to CROW Manual specs installed in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. That would be Monday-Thursday. Friday-Sunday would be building my Sprint-T and Mini Sprint-T, a step-by-step recounting. So my two favorite subjects, keeping people safe from cars, and building cars, in alternating segments. Crossed fingers. XD

Also from Portland, the battle for trail access continues. With River View access in the balance, NW Trail Alliance urges attendance at council meeting The vest reason why this is improtant is this quote: “Commissioners Fritz and Fish trashed an inclusive public process to remove cycling from the list of approved activities in the Park. There’s no scientific evidence against allowing bikes, and the community listening process clearly showed that there is very high public interest in allowing them.

From NYC we finally find out what it takes to get a killer driver thrown in jail for more than a few days. Serial Reckless Driver Who Killed UWS Woman Sentenced To Up To 3 Years The dude drove from 1982-99 without a license, and gathered in the following convictions: 1 hit-and-run, 3 speeding (including 2 aggravated speeding in excess of 30 MPH over the limit), 5 disobeying a traffic control, 1 failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, 2 no license, 2 running red lights, 2 no insurance, 1 unsafe lane change, 1 improper signalling, and a separate conviction for aggravated unlicensed driving. “In the six months prior to the killing, Mercado had hit three other pedestrians, including a 13-year-old boy in Queens.

Then again they have “stuff” like this. Driver Who Killed Fort Greene Pedestrian Doesn’t Even Get His License Suspended Yeah, it was suspended when he drove into the sidewalk to avoid hitting a bus, but they took the car so it won’t hurt anything to give him his license back. /s (where is that sarcasm html tag? From the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike comes news they are going to “Do something about it”. St. Pete Police trying to prevent pedestrian, cyclist deaths So they are apparently criminalizing splitting the crossing to make sure you can get from one side to the other by waiting for traffic to clear on the other side after crossing in the gap from the near side. From the Great White North is another report on that ridiculous sentence for killing a cyclist. First post of 2016, and the anemic Feed

Yep, another barely there Feed today. And because my son had to work late yesterday and was off work today we did our grocery shopping. The MythBusters Marathon is still going on over on the Science Channel, and we are still hip-deep in Christmas chocolates. So by my estimation 2016 is getting off to a great start.

Up first is another link to the story about the MD teen killed by a driver disregarding both a traffic control and another vehicle stopped for that control at the crossing. Crash at risky Md. crosswalk kills teen on bike he received for Christmas Again, a big problem with this is the requirement for drivers to obey the law and the traffic control with no enforcement actions unless someone gets killed. So, until someone gets hit and killed nothing happens at the intersection.

Moving from MD to MA. UPDATED: Cyclist killed on Belmont Street raises concerns about street’s safety and Bicyclist struck, killed by car in Worcester Since lights and reflectors aren’t mentioned, but an after-sundown time of day is mentioned, we have to assume the cyclist met legal requirements before he was hit from behind in the middle of the lane. He was riding in the middle of the lane because there were large piles of snow blocking the bike lane according to the commentariat.

Over in OR another driver gets away with manslaughter after hitting a cyclist from behind. Independence cyclist killed near Monmouth I don’t get it, to get knocked over into the oncoming lane the cyclist had to be riding directly in front of the driver, where a driver watching the road would have to see him. That means the driver was either super distracted, or he hit the cyclist on purpose. Again, no charges for killing a cyclist.

Down south from that OR wreck. In S.F., 25 Pedestrians and 5 Cyclists Were Killed in 2015, Despite Safety Efforts Until they start getting cops pulling over speeding drivers instead of spending hours giving cyclists tickets for rolling a stop sign without putting a foot down there aren’t going to be appreciable declines in vulnerable road user fatalities.

Today’s delayed blog post brought to you by Kinky D&D, and the Feed

I was out of the house again this afternoon as the Kinky D&D group met for a dungeon crawl. The game is loosely based on the Oglaf universe warning very NSFW, and like the comic we get long stretches where nothing remotely sexy is going on for one reason or another. That would include today’s game, where nobody was raped or seduced or otherwise engaged in anything resembling sexual activity, including my nympho bard apprentice NPC. Part of that was caused by the party being under mind control by a race of asexual insectoids with sort of a hive mind (Formeans) for most of the session. We got very little loot from the dungeon crawl, a dagger that was slightly better than one lost during the crawl, and a ring of +2 Charisma for my Warlock. Fortunately none of the characters on the crawl needed to perform marathon sex to charge magic because the Formeans really did not understand the concept of recreational sex used as an energy source for magic spells.

Up first because it is funny and hey, bees. [UPDATED] A Serious Swarm Of Bees Is Devouring A Bike In Midtown There are worse ways to temporarily lose access to your bike than having thousands of bees use it as a rally point while waiting for their new queen.

Next up, the Big Story today has been the cyclist hit head-on by a drunk driver driving on the wrong side of the road. Cyclist Killed in Collision on North Center Street [UPDATED 12 noon] and Hickory Police: Cyclist killed by driver high on drugs Again I see this as a drugged out driver targeting a hated road vermin and because he was impaired he ran into the other vehicles and the power pole. I suggest checking his social media for anti-bike rants or even jokes.

The other Big story today is a hit-and-run caught on tape in NYC. Cops Seek Hit-And-Run Driver Who Ran Over Harlem Cyclist and Police Release Video In Harlem Hit-And-Run That Critically Injured Cyclist The cyclist was waiting to make a legal left turn when hit, and drivers wonder why cyclists don’t wait for the red. Well wrecks like this are a big reason.

How much street can you buy with $150K? 1.3 What does it cost to run the transportation system? Turns out to be not much, one traffic light and a few feet of sidewalk with a curb. Converting from the metric system and Canadian dollars it turns out that one lane of road costs $1 million per mile, +/- a few bucks, not counting the cost of the land underneath it. At $150K/mile for a segregated bike path making everybody ride a bike sounds like sound fiscal policy.

So it is official now, it was the cyclist’s fault for getting hit, not the driver blowing 0.123BAC%. Police: Cyclist at fault in crash that killed him I smell bovine digestive byproduct. I smell BS because none of the cyclist’s belongings have been returned to his family especially the bike.

NOLA has a bicycle infrastructure problem. CYCLIST KILLED IN MID CITY WRECK Bog-standard right hook, incomplete pass followed by a turn, and the innocent cyclist has nowhere to get away from the truck.

The shoulder of the road is not bicycle infrastructure. Cyclist dies after being hit by vehicle on Goodwood Blvd. Assuming the driver’s story is correct, and the remains of the bike seem to back that up, there are many reasons why a cyclist would swerve from the shoulder, including there was suddenly no shoulder there to ride on any more.

OK, tomorrow is the Lab Rat Keeper, and the day after is the consult with the surgeon. There is no suspense about if I’m going to have surgery, only when. I will have a bit of time free tomorrow while I’m out on the road, and I’m contemplating getting a massage to release some of the tension I have been holding in. I haven’t had a massage in months, and you can pretty much tell by my gait and posture. I take my cane with me almost every time I leave the house now so I can try to straighten out and walk upright, but the lump on my neck has been making that difficult. Can’t walk upright when you can’t hold your head up. Anyway, moving on to things that are not me.

Up first is more about the possible murder of a cyclist in Oz. ‘He did not deserve this’: Family grieve cyclist killed in Anakie hit and run also Cyclists ‘stalked’ near Geelong, Victorian police say, as they investigate fatal hit-and-run So, there may be more than one driver targeting cyclists, or they may have caught the guy that did it and he still hasn’t cracked. I’m not sure which is worse.

It didn’t take long for a UK jury to convict and sentence a driver that claimed he thought he hit a garbage can when he hit-and-run a cyclist. Motorist Michael Rollason found guilty of causing cyclist’s death by dangerous driving and Motorist who killed cyclist in hit and run then claimed he hit wheelie bin jailed for seven years and Motorist who killed cyclist in hit and run then claimed he hit a wheelie bin jailed for seven years He got a “lifetime” ban, which in the UK means he can apply for a retest to get his license back 8 years after he gets completely clear of all his prison obligations. That means at least 15 years where we won’t have to worry about his being on the roads to kill another person. The hard part about the driving ban is while the penalty for driving while under the lifetime ban is severe, the likelihood of getting caught without another wreck is close to nil given the sad state of roads policing in the UK (and everywhere else for that matter).

The big US story continues to be the wreck that cost a cyclist’s leg in Portland. Still in the middle of a massive plant orgy, and the Feed

I think the plants are finally starting to get tired of sex, because I could almost see where I was going when I woke up this morning. I’m still congested and have a runny nose, but all my symptoms are abating even before I take a pill. I’m mostly functional after I take a pill, except for the drowsiness caused by the meds. I have a doctor’s appointment with the Lab Rat Keeper this month, I’m going to enquire if there are other OTC allergy meds I can take with this study med that don’t make me fall asleep at the drop of a hat.

Also, today starts Bike Month, which will include personal appearances of yours truly at local events. I think they’re more interested in my bringing Francis/es as a hauler of materiel than my (not so) sparkling repartee, but as of now I’m committed to being at the local Bike to Work Day, May 16 at the Downtown Garland Station, and another event later in the month that has not be confirmed. If this event goes off I’ll be there and give everyone a heads up ahead of time.

I’m going to break my usual order of things because there was a very serious and terrifying wreck in Oz this week that deserves maximum attention, the left hook of a cyclist by a HGV. Chaotic scenes after cyclist hit in Sydney and this one Hurt NSW cyclist recovering in hospital and this Cyclist fighting for life after becoming trapped under truck at St Peters in Sydney’s inner west As reports stand right now the cyclist was proceeding straight at the intersection in the designated area for bicycles (the Oz version of AFRAP except backwards) when the truck made a left over the cyclist. Where the cyclist was in relation to the rear axle of the truck as the truck signalled its turn, or even if the turn was signalled, is not known. Worst-case-scenario on this is the truck was waiting at the light without signalling when the cyclist pulled up or with less than one signal cycle visible as he passed, leaving the cyclist next to a truck he didn’t know was about to turn while completely hidden from the driver in the passenger side blind spot. Intersection protocols would have been useless as there was no way to react to the turning vehicle. Best case would have given the cyclist a few seconds to move away from the truck, which might have been enough to avoid collision or at least reduce the amount of his body under the truck.

Back to the US for this hit-and-run (with arrest) in CO. Hit-and-run injures bicyclist, driver caught and Cyclist hit on Bannock in Denver; Witness helps police find suspected hit-and-run driver Driver runs red light and hits cyclist on cross street. Cyclist screened from seeing vehicle (and vice versa) because driver made a sudden lane change to pop out from around a stopped car. Intersection protocols mooted because of lack of visibility, and infrastructure mooted because driver ran a red light. Vehicle sold to assist cyclist in covering medical expenses and to prevent the driver from having access to the weapon he used to cause death or injury.

Closer to home we get another TX driver leaving death and destruction in his/her wake. Cyclist injured in Broadway hit-and-run Hit from behind wreck so maybe the protocols would help reduce injury and getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. Make drivers actually have to pay for their “problems”.

A suspicious FL wreck. Witnesses: bicyclist hit by Orlando Police patrol car Interesting that the PD has no comment on this one. Right hook so intersection protocols to avoid or reduce damages, get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. But if the driver is part of the people who are supposed to be enforcing the laws against what he just did…

Update on a WA wreck. Prosecutors: Driver who killed cyclist may have been on phone Now they have the cell phone records of the driver to go with the body of the cyclist and the forensic evidence of the vehicle speed at impact, proving the driver is a sphincter.

Update on the wreck that led to the driver suing the estate of the cyclist she killed for the psychological harm she caused herself. Crash that led to driver’s lawsuit against dead cyclist to be reviewed My fervent hope is this lawsuit will end up with the driver in jail for failing to see what was plainly in front of her and desperately easy to avoid.

Another wreck in the Great White North. Cyclist Seriously Injured Nothing on the cyclist’s direction or location, but the hit-and-run aspect make it the driver’s fault. Unfortunately not enough information to tell you how to avoid with the built environment, but getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” will prevent another wreck like it.

Moving over to Jolly Olde, this video shows a driver drive right through a cyclist waiting at a red light. Shocking video sees 12-year-old cyclist hit by car The driver was convicted and given a gentle caress on the back of the hand for his transgression.

Coast Road cyclist tragedy: Accused loses plea to have police statement dropped Drunk driver with no license, insurance, or privilege to drive (previous conviction) kills without remorse until it looks like he might have to spend a few days in jail.

Another drunk driver kills another cyclist in Enn Zed. Charges laid over cyclist’s death Multiple previous convictions on drunk driving failed to convince him to not drink and drive, perhaps a long stint in jail will. From the looks of the remains of the bike there was not a great deal the cyclist could have done to avoid this wreck, as the debris was spread from one side of the road to the other, with the weapon vehicle on the wrong side of the road after the wreck. To be honest it looks like the guy deliberately hit the cyclist and lost control trying to stay on the road. I believe the operative phrase for this one ends with “… and the horse you rode in on.”

A wreck in a bike race as somebody got blown into somebody else and chaos ensued in the rest of the pack, like Talladega in Sprint Cup having “The Big One” at least once a race. Eighty bicycle racers involved in crash near Silver City during Tour of the Gila Yeah one wreck that put 25 people in the ER and 2 in hospital without even a single car involved merits a mention on this blog.
