Now that I have that done here’s the Feed

Previous post covered what is going on in my life at the moment, except the bicycle part. I’m springing Francis/es from hock tomorrow and buying groceries so the post will be sometime in the late evening or early morning of the night…

The Big Story today seems to be the cyclist killed crossing Canada to raise money for the WWF. Toronto man cycling across Canada for WWF killed in Manitoba crash also Toronto cyclist dead after being hit by SUV near Brandon, Man. and this Cyclist killed on Manitoba road was raising money for charity last link Toronto cyclist killed near Brandon was on charity ride Hit-from-behind wreck with a cyclist whose bicycle was covered in reflectors in the pictures that accompanied the links when I saw them, and on a narrow road with poor choices for escape routes that make the protocols moot to do anything about this wreck, leaving only getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent. If I read the comments correctly there was very good bicycle infrastructure (not “up to Dutch” but pretty good) that bypassed the city and the road the cyclist was killed is the only way into the city from the west. So definitely infrastructure was a part of this wreck.

Relatively close to that wreck comes two links to the final disposition of another wreck. Driver Cleared in January Cyclist Death and No charges against driver of car that hit, killed bicyclist in Anchorage As I read the report the cyclist was suckered into crossing the street because at least one other driver slowed or stopped for him to cross the street from the parking lot he entered the street from, which then blocked the view of the driver that hit him.

Another link to that blind AL driver that hit 3 cyclists, killing one, sending a second to hospital, and causing the third to need clean shorts. Bicycle rider killed in crash AFAIK the cyclists were riding single-file when they were hit from behind by the vision-impaired driver. All the parties in this wreck were headed north, making the angle of the sun a moot question as it would have been off to the side or behind the driver no matter what the time of day. So hit-from-behind protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

A MO cyclist was killed training for the MS 150. Cyclist killed Sunday morning while training for MS 150 Nothing on the mode yet, so Infrastructure! to prevent, probably. The cyclist sounds like a nice person, whom I probably would have liked being with.

And this one is just so… Bike rider on ‘bucket list’ trip from Maryland to Miami fatally stabbed The cyclist died because the killer had untreated mental illnesses. The uselessness of it all is just overwhelming.

Our Daily Ted. All hands on deck: Ride and vigil tonight for justice in Milt Olin case; is the DA’s office involved in a cover-up?

And a separate article about the ride mentioned above. Memorial ride to honor cyclist killed by sheriff’s deputy

And another Big Story is a bit of legal Infrastructure! from CA. New state bike law require 3-foot buffer between cyclists, vehicles And New law requires 3-foot buffer zone for cyclists That it took three tries to get a 3-foot law past Jerry Brown is an outrage…

And that seems to be all the links for today. No fits, but no giggles either.

Time for Mule Duty already? and the Feed

One thing is nearly constant when you’re a cyclist, eating, followed by running out of food. The pantry here at Casa de El Poeta is once again resembling Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard from the nursery rhyme. So after Mrs. the Poet gets off work Blue and I will schlep our sorry selves over to the local purveyor of comestibles and secure caloric sustenance, then return said sustenance to the Casa.

From CA terrifying video of a driver ramming a cyclist. Raw: California driver sought for ramming bike You can see the driver makes a 3-point turn to reverse direction then deliberately tries to smash the cyclist against a trash bin. That is attempted murder in my book, but as a survivor of a similar assault in 2001 my judgement might be a little biased.

Also from CA a cyclist is hit because she was in the bike lane and the driver wanted to be where she was? Bicyclist Hit, Injured by ‘Impatient’ Driver I strongly disagree with the subhead on this article, this was no an “accident” but another deliberate assault with a deadly weapon.

What appears to be a Jerry Browning of a cyclist turns fatal. San Rafael man dies in bike crash How else would the cyclist have ended up under the truck if it had not been passing too closely?

More on the VA single cyclist wreck during a group tour. Cyclist injured in crash in Bedford County I’m still trying to find what might have caused the cyclist to leave the road in the first place as something just does not pass the “smell test” on this one. More Iowa Man Airlifted After Bedford Co. Bike Crash

More on that UK story about the guy with the suspended license driving drunk and running from the police. Man admits killing couple riding tandem bike near Bristol As I posted earlier about this story, there was no way for a human cyclist to be able to evade a drunk driver weaving at high speed through traffic, and infrastructure would not have helped much either (drunk drivers are already breaking many laws why should they pay any attention to a bit of paint on the roads outside a residential area?).

Infratrcuture! news from CA. Of broomsticks and bikes NBC Universal after a little arm-twisting decided it would be in their best interests to no longer impede this vital stretch of bike path, and instead they should help pay for it. I would have loved to been a fly on the wall for that negotiation session.

A handy new link I have found for judging if an e-assist bike will work for you. Electric bike trip simulator If you have the efficiency of your motor over a wide range of speeds (like you get by using the ebikes.ca motor simulator) then you can plug in the percent effciency at the various speeds (I assume this is at full throttle) and get a fairly accurate range determination for your route.

Last link, a drunken bike thief returns the bike with an apology, and a coupon good for a free piece of cake at a local restaurant. Bike Thief Apology: Intoxicated Bandit Returns Bicycle With Priceless Note, Domino’s Coupon (PHOTO) While the coupon was a nice gesture, returning the bike was even better, and regretting the actions taken while inebriated tops all.

And those are all the links that gave me fits today.

Is it December already? And the Feed

All I can say is “What happened to November?” And I still have to mow the lawn here in the suburbs of Hell as the weather is not cold enough to make the grass go dormant. It’s kind of a wash though as the drought this summer made a period of more than 2 months that I didn’t have to mow the lawn because it had stopped growing, so I exchange a 2 month gap in the summer mowing for having to mow the lawn in December. I know one thing for sure, mowing the lawn in December is a lot more comfortable than mowing the lawn when it’s 110°F in July and August. And also today being Thursday I have mule duties to perform to make sure there is food to eat in this house. Today’s shopping list is so short after the mess I hauled home last week that I will be doing the shopping by myself, I was given a list to purchase, most of which I eat almost exclusively (as in this is going to be my food that nobody else likes that we ran out of this week, so I have to buy it and bring it home myself).

Up first by reason of proximity to WoaB World HQ in the suburbs of Hell is a hit-and-run driver getting caught down the road in Temple TX. Temple: Woman Charged After Hit-And-Run Driver Strikes Bicyclist It always amazes me how many people are up and paying attention when someone gets hit in the wee hours of the morning, even in TX. You would not believe the number of people who watched the guy that tried to kill me pull that U-turn at 0115. I could hear about 20 different voices as I lay on the street before I was loaded into the ambulance. In this case there were enough people awake that a detailed description of the weapon vehicle was given to LEO who found the vehicle a short distance away in a mobile home park in spite of the wreck taking place @0315 in a small town in TX. Who was doing what was not included in the article so I can’t say how you could avoid a similar wreck. Just keep your SA up to avoid idiots in cars…

Another report on the woman that was Jerry Browned by a SUV in CA. CYCLIST INJURED IN COLLEGE AREA If I wasn’t already familiar with this wreck I wouldn’t have been able to tell you anything from this report. This was the wreck where there was no room to pass because of an oncoming vehicle in the other lane, but the doofus driver tried to pass anyway. This should be at a minimum a vehicular assault with wanton disregard for human life as an aggravating circumstance, but most likely there won’t even be a ticket for the unsafe pass.

Update on the assault with a motor vehicle in MD just outside Washington DC. Reward Offered for Hit-and-Run Driver At this point it looks like a deliberate assault with an attempt at a second shot from the driver on the injured cyclist. I suggest bringing them the head of the driver with or without the rest of the body. Hint: heads are a lot easier to transport if you remove the rest of the body first. That part won’t get posted to the BikeJournal.com wreck thread…

A combination of a wreck report and a call for improved infrastructure in Canuckistan. Cyclists demand more protection after man killed in collision with semi-trailer This is another wreck that could have been reduced from a fatality to minor injuries by installing side guards on trailers to prevent cyclists, pedestrians and even small cars from being caught under the wheels of oversized vehicles. The cyclist was hit-from-behind by the trailer which means the truck was passing way too close in the first place.

A wreck in Enn Zed. Cyclist injured in collision Notice that because he wasn’t wearing a helmet he was partially to blame for the wreck? But if you read the report, the van was at a NZ version of a yield sign when the cyclist entered the intersection on the cross street. This tells me that the van driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was mostly at fault for the wreck, not the cyclist. To avoid use intersection protocols and maintain a high level of SA.

A German cyclist who entered a coma in the US is returned to Germany still in the coma. Comatose German cyclist Michael Sprick to head home The cyclist was hit-from-behind by a semi that had drifted at about 55 MPH into the shoulder where the cyclist was riding while the driver was doing “something” inside the truck. Use hit-from-behind protocols to avoid a similar situation.

As the number of cyclists increases in the Wasatch Front, conflicts also increase. McEntee: Cyclists and drivers, watch out for each other From what I could gather from the article the author was mostly about telling cyclists to wear helmets rather than drivers to stop hitting cyclists.

A list (with pictures and video) of the most dangerous places to ride a bike in SF. Most Likely Places To Be Injured in a Bicycle Accident In San Francisco”

In contrast to that the DA is strengthening the legal infrastructure when vehicle operators kill. DA’s Office Filing Criminal Charges Against Pedestrian-Killing Drivers, Cyclists I think the reason the DA’s office is going after the drivers is because of the outcry about the cyclist that killed a pedestrian, because they couldn’t go after the cyclist and continue to ignore all the killer drivers. Regardless, prosecution against these drivers was sorely needed.

In contrast to SF increasing prosecutions against killer drivers, NYPD just can’t be bothered to even investigate enough to permit a prosecution. NYPD’s Handling Of Traffic Crash Investigations Will Be Investigated Even in cases where a driver kills other motor vehicle occupants NYPD fails to deliver enough evidence for the DA to prosecute. I mean there was a case where a driver was doing in excess of 100 MPH when he hit another vehicle and killed some of the occupants and no evidence was delivered to the DA to file charges. Many wrecks never even get a report filed in spite of fatalities involved, a violation of NY state laws.

And that’s all the news that gives me fits today, and boy did I throw a lot of fits while reading the Feed…

What a ride this month has been, and the Feed

Well, I must say that this has been a very interesting month for me personally, and also in the news. There has been the Occupy movement, Tasha Borland’s appeal of her sentence, and a number of drivers that hurt or killed cyclists actually being found guilty of being really bad drivers that should never get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle again in their lives. Not to mention that I might be getting a job that is related to this blog. The job isn’t funded yet, so I’m not going to release specifics yet, but if the job gets funded I’ll be talking to engineers about road projects from the view of someone that rides a bike for transportation under a new state law that requires all new roads make accommodations for all modes of transportation including walking or riding a bike. Since none of the people designing the roads around here use a bike as transportation they have little (as in no) idea what a person riding a bicycle really needs to go from A to B. I will be used to fill in that knowledge gap. Given that here in the suburbs of Hell we still have a majority of our streets with no sidewalks or shoulders, I see a rather daunting task ahead of me.

Up first is another amusing link to someone being stupid on a bicycle, drug paraphernalia edition. Police: Crack cocaine found on Carlisle bicyclist I suggest putting your crack pipe away and not having it on your person when riding your bike while drunk. It should be noted though that even in his mentally muddled state the cyclist was never a danger to other road users except himself. I hope the dash cam video of this arrest makes it to YouTube soon…

Another TX cyclist is messed up while in the intersection when the light is red. Bicyclist critically injured in West Side crash I don’t know if this cyclist ran a red or entered under a stale green that turned red after he entered, but he might have had his SA impaired by wearing headphones. Anyway, intersection protocols and watch for stale greens (if the intersection has countdown pedestrian crossings look to see that there is at least 3 seconds per lane left on the counter (you can figure 4 seconds of yellow on top of that, so for a simple one lane in each direction you need 3 seconds of time on the countdown, 2 lanes each way 6-9 seconds and so on). Of course there are some intersections you can’t cross on a bike even if you’re at speed at the stop bar when the light changes to green because of a too-short green phase. Report lights like that as unsafe.

Update on the condition of a cyclist that was left-crossed in VA. Injured cyclist out of ICU Ignore the comments section.

I mentioned drivers getting way harder sentences than they used to get for hitting cyclists this month, here’s an example of that. John David Hines, Drunk-Ass Fire Capt. Who Mowed Down Cyclist, Gets Jail, Probation and $102k Restitution Bill I would still like to see drunks that kill or injure banned from driving for life if not longer (you killed someone while DUI in a previous life, shoe leather and a bicycle are your only legal transportation in this life 😉 )

A woman in CA gets Jerry Browned. Bicyclist injured in College Area accident There was another vehicle in the oncoming lane and the SUV tried to pass anyway and hit the cyclist, making the driver guilty of DWS (Driving While Stupid).

More on the homeless man in CA that was killed in a hit-and-run wreck early this week. Police seek witnesses to crash that killed bicyclist in Santa Rosa Because of the second impact they don’t know what way the cyclist was going when he was hit the first time so I can’t tell you how to avoid a similar wreck other than making yourself visible as possible and watching out for idiots. The watching out for idiots should go as a given but I’ll say it anyway, as many times as necessary.

News from the UK as they crack down on homicidal bus drivers after a group of 5 cyclists was “nudged” by a bus. Spies sent on Leeds buses in ‘bad driver’ cycle probe I keep mentioning that driving a motor vehicle deliberately into civilians or unarmed soldiers in a time of war is a war crime (mis-use of a WMD) so why isn’t the same thing even criminally charged during a time of peace? I love the ever-present comment about cyclists not paying the “road tax” that has been abolished since 1937. Vehicle owners in the UK pay an excise tax based on the amount of pollution made by the vehicle, if bicycles were subject to this they would get the £0.00 charge that all non-polluting vehicles get plus a free tax disc that would cost the government about £1.50. Given the current best guess of 23,000,000 bicycles in the UK “taxing” bicycles so they can properly display their “road tax” sticker would cost the government about $46 million per year. That would fill a lot of potholes and build a lot of real bike lanes.

Infrastructure! from Indiana. Don’t forget walkers, cyclists in street design Imagine that, actually letting people have a choice about how they get from A to B in this country.

More on the movement in the Great White North to make trucks safer to be around human beings. Cities move independently to put safety barriers on trucks I don’t know how legal it is in Canada to have different equipment standards from one city to the next, but obviously if the upper 2 layers of government won’t help than it devolves to the lowest level of government to protect its citizens.

A Montana jurisdiction loses a suit over poorly maintained bicycle infrastructure that caused a serious injury wreck. Motorized bike rider wins $100K settlement after crashing on ice in Ravalli County Someone deliberately left an ice patch in the bike path, that caused a serious injury wreck and they are surprized to get sued?

And that’s all the news that gives me fits today.
