Good news and bad news after visiting the Lab Rat Keeper, and the Feed

Did I create a Meme?

I was sent this link this morning that covered the same ground as one of my Wreck-free Sunday posts a few weeks back, about what if we treated motor vehicle wrecks as a disease instead of “Shit Happens” We need to find a cure

From reading the comments to the new article I find that some of the people are shall we say challenged by complex issues. Between the guy that thinks cyclists should ride facing traffic to the guy that thinks bikes should be restricted from riding anyplace without a bike lane. How about the converse of that? Restrict cars from any surface street without a bike lane. Make killing while driving an automatic loss of license. Make driving without a license equivalent to illegal possession of a weapon, and driving without insurance a crime rather than a civil offense. Make infrastructure work for people that don’t have cars, so that poor people don’t have to drive without insurance to be able to work and buy food.

I don’t want to put any more people in jail than absolutely required for public safety. I would be much happier if we could keep killer drivers off the roads without jail terms but I don’t see how that could be possible without at least the threat of jail or prison. Perhaps mandatory confiscation of cars involved in wrecks with permanent forfeiture when somebody dies from a wreck. If you know your car will go to car jail when you have a wreck before you are allowed to fix it would be a great incentive to not have a wreck. I mean having your car in the shop is bad enough, but having a mandatory loss of the car for a couple of months while forensic mechanics go over the car with a fine-tooth comb to try to prove you’re an idiot behind the wheel would be just awful, and a very strong incentive to not have a wreck.

So, the answer is a combination of infrastructure and legal sanctions when the infrastructure doesn’t do the job, but is there the political will to do what is required?
