Happy Star Wars day! And something weird happened

May the Fourth be with you, etc & etc.

We finished the run last week so this week was mostly bookkeeping for the group as loot had to be divvied and karma totaled up and players choosing what to buy and skills to train. The Old Man leveled up his combat skills on guns and blades to 6 and took a level of unarmed combat, then celebrated by getting a sword that folds into his synthetic arm to complement the Cybershot in his leg. So at this level he’s pretty much guaranteed to hit the accuracy limits of all his guns on every roll as his gun rolls are 15 dice and his longarms all have accuracy of 4 and the pistols are either 3 or 4. There were a lot of pistols in the loot from the last run that the owners won’t have use for since they’re dead, even though most were damaged in the battle. There were enough taken that several good pistols could be made by taking the undamaged parts and assembling then into new weapons that the Old Man claimed as his share of the loot since he refused to accept any of the drugs we took from the bad guys. The Old Man is a bit mercenary, but there are limits to what he would take.

I’m still thinking about the Sprint-T, mainly about the nose at the moment but still thinking about the exhaust collector for the tri-y headers. What I’m mainly trying to do is use the collector like a quarter-wave tuned pipe for a 2-stroke engine, having the secondary tubes dumping against a reflective wall to bounce back a resonant wave to pack charge in from the overlap phase of the cam at certain RPM to get an additional torque peak not on the intake peak and spread out the powerband.

OK it is now several hours after I composed the last line about the exhaust of the Sprint-T because something disturbing happened right after I did that, I got a call from a reporter for American Media Inc. asking me about my brother’s ex-wife who was killed in an alligator attack on St. John’s Island SC. I hadn’t checked my text messages for the morning so I missed the one from my brother telling me about it and found out from the media asking my opinion about it. I’m still trying to process an alligator attacking someone I know, and finding out from a reporter asking what I knew about it just made it weird, no, it made it superweird, like X-files weird. And it isn’t the first time I had an alligator in the blog. I actually had a tag for the previous time. I still haven’t fully processed it yet, that Cindy was killed. I’ve seen people get killed, but never anyone I knew.

Grocery Day again, and the Feed (now with more raisins)

Yeah, I have no idea what that means except I’m still loopy from posting after 0300 this morning. But today is the day I restock my comestibles. Which reminds me I need to check on my special card deals before I leave for grocery shopping. I had some very strange dreams after finishing the blog post last night… Let’s just say that if this was a prophetic dream like I sometimes have I have some relatives I didn’t know about. Which can be a good thing.

Up first is part 1 of Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: Killer OC hit-and-run driver jailed, Westwood Blvd bike lanes threatened, and Beverly Hills lanes fail

And Part 2 of Our Daily Ted. San Diego-area bike rider killed when minivan driver drifts into bike lane [facepalm] Another one hit from behind in the bike lane.[/facepalm]

More Ghost Bikes in AZ. ‘Ghost Bikes’ placed on State Route 95 after deadly accident There was one comment that really needed the writer slapped because of that comment, the one about cyclists having to swerve around the Ghost Bike and into traffic when the bike was chained to a guardrail at least a foot off the shoulder of the road.

“Nice guys” can get you killed on the roads. Injured cyclist sues well-intentioned driver who waved, allowing truck’s driver to turn and hit her The “nice guy” in this case directed oncoming turning traffic directly into the cyclist going straight through the intersection with the right of way. Other “nice guys” direct cyclists to cross when they don’t have the right of way getting the cyclist hit by a car going through the intersection with the right of way. Fortunately the driver who directs traffic that causes a wreck is partially at fault in any wreck from that directed movement in the state of OR.

While we are in OR, here’s something from BikePortland. Talk of a disastrous earthquake got you down? Just keep on biking As was pointed out elsewhere, when the earthquake hit Fukushima for weeks and some places months after the quake the only ground vehicles moving were bicycles because those were the only things that did not depend on a perfect road or railbed, and also not dependent on fossil fuels which had to be shipped in from outside the country.

A witness to cop car/bike wreck says there were 2 cop cars. Motorist describes accident involving bicyclist, police cruiser All I know for sure on this one is the cyclist died.

Another reason to not ride on the shoulder of the road. Bicyclist killed in collision with garbage truck in Exeter identified I suspect the reason the cyclist “fell over” had to do with the construction project leaving dirt and trash in the shoulder. The subsequent secondary collision with the garbage hauler was just topping on the cake.

Moral of this link is even when you get right hooked by a truck violating your right of way, if you are over the limit on BAC%, it is your fault. Vacationing Woman Was Intoxicated When Killed In Bike-Truck Collision: Police

Earning to day’s “crap infrastructure” tag is this bike lane. Mayor says it’s time to scrap Central Parkway bike lane The biggest problem is they tried to do it on the cheap and also not reduce parking, which resulted in what would be double-parking in the traffic lane and people hitting parked cars. Simple solution for this is remove the parking from the areas where people are running into the parked cars. And cite all the drivers who hit the parked cars with violating the basic speed law that requires drivers to be able to stop in the distance they can see clearly.

A driver in West Canuckistan finally pleads guilty to killing a man back in 2012. Woman pleads guilty in impaired driving death of Maple Ridge cyclist Wow only 3 years after killing the guy, what’s the rush? 😛

Since when has a traffic death ever made any sense? Family calls cyclist’s death ‘senseless’ Seriously, stuff like this with children instead of adults is why the Dutch got their bike infrastructure. See “stop the Kindermoord” on Google.

This is just a nightmare. Cyclist died in hospital five years after lorry overtaking him knocked him off his bike He never left a hospital except to be transferred to another hospital for treatment for five freaKING YEARS!!!

Last link is from Oz again. Accused hopes hurt cyclist recovers Yeah, because if he doesn’t recover that will cause the charges to be upgraded severely and make the punishment that much worse considering she was drunk and left the scene of the wreck.

And now I’m “all done” until tomorrow.

I’m including a funny link today that had nothing to do with bicycles, and the Feed

OK I was sent this link from the source, and I thought it was freaking hilarious, especially the funny looks the marchers gave the guy playing the Sousaphone… and the other comments from people walking with them… See? I DO have a life outside of bikes and D&D. Kinda sorta. I mean it’s a “life” like ramen is “food” right?

Up first is Our Daily Ted because Why Not? Morning Links: Suit filed in death of Granada Hills teenager; Biking Black Hole considers SaMo Blvd bike lanes

I’m “sceptible” of this article about the PROK. Un-icyclists rejoice: North Korea installs bike paths throughout Pyongyang as pedal power grows in popularity among citizens Let’s just say that some (most?) of the pictures look like Photoshop or the people in them do not look even remotely Asian, so probably fake.

Remember that guy that basically scraped a cyclist across a brick wall and spun the tires off the rims of the weapon vehicle? Well the media outlet that blamed his drug cocktail on pot has another article about the story. $250,000 bond for driver in fatal bike crash Reefer Madness was disproven years decades ago dudes, you lost, let it go.

Another driver three sheets in the wind when they hit a cyclist makes a stupid claim about the cyclist. Driver pleads not guilty to DUI in crash that killed cyclist And LEO insist that a 0.12BAC% and prescription drugs had nothing to do with the driver hitting the cyclist from behind, that it was the cyclist’s fault for “pulling in front” of the drunken spouse of a LEO.

Update on that cyclist injured by a hit-and-run driver on a charity ride in OH. Family of VeloSano cyclist injured in hit-and-run issues statement and Bicyclist injured in hit-skip during VeloSano ‘Bike To Cure’ event recovering I’m still trying to figure out how the cyclist failed to yield when there were no witnesses and the driver left the scene, it could just as easy been a driver turning onto the road where the cyclist was hit from either direction of the road he was riding on, left cross or right hook.

OH just was not the place to be on a bicycle this past weekend. Cyclist Injured In Hit And Run Not much on the second wreck but plenty on the hit-and-run that sounds like a buzz job gone very south.

This sounds like someone got beaten up and robbed. Police trying to identify woman found in Milwaukee park No cars in the area and the woman was missing her wallet and phone when she was found with facial wounds and bruises.

CO has a dangerous infrastructure and attitude problem that has gotten several cyclists killed. Kechter I-25 overpass dangerous stretch for cyclists You can see the infrastructure in the pictures with the article, and read about the attitude problem in both the article and the comments to the article.

They caught the GA driver doing doughnuts in the middle of the street and jumping the curb to hit a sidewalk cyclist in Hotlanta. Alleged Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Atlanta Cyclist and Suspect charged in fatal hit-and-run crash with Atlanta cyclist The driver appears to be caucasian and was injured in the wreck. There is a possibility the driver may have been under the influence of some intoxicating substance at the time but there are no reports verifying the truth of that statement from early on in the story.

From the most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike, these kids survived. Girl, 7, boy, 11, injured when pickup strikes bike in Zephyrhills Other than blaming the kids for not stopping at a stop sign there isn’t much to report in this wreck.

A little NY state legal infrastructure under construction. These Four Bills Do Deserve a Vote in the Assembly I don’t see what the holdup is on some of these bills, especially the one on making NY e-assist laws comply with federal regulations defining an e-assist bike. That was passed early in the BushII administration, shortly after 9/11 and we are approaching 14 years since that. And I still don’t see what the problem is for raising the sentencing for killing while driving without a license, that just seems like a no-brainer.

Some good news from the Great White North. Critically Injured Days Apart, London Cyclist, Skateboarder Both Out of Hospital I’m glad they are both on the mend and doing as best as can be expected.

Last link, two new battery chemistries for EV and e-assist bikes. Challenging Lithium-Ion Batteries With New Chemistry The Lithium/Sulfur is more energy-dense, but the sodium ion has the advantage of being able to run all the way to flat without damaging the cells and being cheaper. This is going to be a busy night on All Star weekend for NASCAR, and the Feed

There are a bunch of races tonight because of the All Star race tomorrow, there is the Sprint Showdown to get in the race tomorrow for drivers who did not meet the criteria to get in the race before. Then there is the truck series race after that, which promises to be another barn-burner. So I’m going to be as happy as a pig in cool mud on a hot day tonight with all the NASCAR action.

Up first, the article is fairly straightforward about this wreck and the rider’s projected recovery, but the comments, whoo boy the comments… Injured cyclist Alistair Corkett talks about crash that cost him his leg My favorite crazy comment was the guy that blamed the wreck on Obamacare. Snow in the morning and high 40s in the afternoon, and the Feed

Never has the expression “Don’t like the weather in Texas? Wait a few minutes” been more apropos than today. We had about an inch of snowfall this morning, and nearly 50°F this afternoon. I mean, really?! Snow followed by 20°F above freezing temperatures? Whose idea was this anyway? (I know, nobody had the “idea” for this weather, it just happened as a result of natural forces at work)

Up first is a “What were they thinking?!” report from Enn Zed. Ad covering truck window could have caused cyclist death and Advertising blocked truckie’s view in cyclist death Really? The damn trucks are nearly blind to the passenger side anyway, so you make it worse by covering the passenger side window? Did your parents have any children that lived? Back to the US for another pair of links on the guilty plea of a hit-and-run cyclist killer. Motorist Pleads Guilty in Death of Bicyclist, Leaving Scene and Motorist pleads guilty in death of bicyclist, leaving scene I had some other links to this yesterday. Another bad day for Ted Rogers in Our Daily Ted. 89-year old bike rider killed in San Diego; police blame the victim

Maybe if a few “captains of industry” are nearly killed cycling something will get done about bicycle infrastructure? Millionaire entrepreneur explains why cycling — and not golf — is the new sport of choice for young professionals I see what the guy is saying, but I can’t relate to it. One of the comments helped in understandistuping the difference, golf requires a mostly-fixed long length of time to participate, including getting there which may take two hours of driving each way, then 4-5 hours on the course, with very little actual exercise during the whole exercise.

And I’m hoping the sudden change in direction doesn’t cause emotional whiplash, but for some reason in spite of 10-20 cyclists a year dying mostly because of crappy infrastructure the people in charge can’t manage to spend more than half of their budget. Revealed: London’s most dangerous junctions for cyclists – as transport chiefs under-spend £50m road safety budget The fact that they only spent £29 million of £82 million in their budget with a number of known hotspots that desperately needed fixing with several that had killed cyclists repeatedly over the last few years, well there are words that I can’t use and keep the “SFW” rating on this blog.

Still in Jolly Olde relatives of victims ask their government for punishments that are more in line with the seriousness of events when drivers kill. Family of Ross and Clare Simons – killed riding tandem bicycle in Hanham – to meet PM David Cameron The killer in question for this article killed two people while driving illegally and will only spend less than 10 years total on prison.

Still in the UK, the peril of using bad statistics when talking about bicycle safety. Insurance giant’s cycling ‘study’ shows the perils of poor statistics Somehow they got from an official government statistic of 2% of bicycle wrecks involving “no lights” to the 1 of 3 wrecks caused by a lack of lights, so what other bad information did they use?

The truck is LATE! and the Feed

OK my birthday present to myself seems to have gone missing. Tracking from the vendor said the truck left their warehouse late Wednesday morning and was expected at my house about 1800 +/-. It is currently 1540 as I type this on Thursday afternoon, and not even a call to verify I will be at the house for delivery. The vendor has my land line number that has only rung once today for someone trying to get money from someone else, I have called my land line from my cell and verified working status, and my stuff is “out there somewhere”. My level of frustration is climbing by the hour, I think partially because this is something that has been almost 50 years in coming. I have wanted a Bucket ever since seeing my first Fad T with a psychedelic panel paint job in 1969. A T Bucket is Car, distilled to essence. Four wheels, an engine, steering, brakes, and a place to sit, that is what a T Bucket is. If it isn’t part of Go, Whoa, or Which Way it isn’t on a T Bucket, which is what I like about that particular kind of car. And now mine is missing before I even got to see it. 😥

ETA I got another e-mail from the vendor saying my stuff will be delivered tomorrow and that the Wednesday by 1800 e-mail was sent in error.

I’m really hoping this is pure karma and not anyone “helping”. Driver who fatally struck cyclist dies in crash I prefer to think that karma ran over his… that’s why there was no witnesses or evidence.

An SC cyclist apparently ran a stop sign just before getting killed. Coroner identifies cyclist killed in Spartanburg Co. wreck and Officials identify cyclist killed in Boiling Springs collision Intersection protocols include waiting at stop signs to avoid getting hit. This wreck took place at the boundary between residential and rural in a mostly-rural area, in the Dutch model there would be a bicycle highway running parallel to the road where the cyclist was killed that would be reached before the cyclist reached the highway and eliminated the need to cross the highway.

A NE cyclist is killed by a drunk driver. Bicyclist Killed In Crash South Of Lincoln Mode of the wreck not given, but the intersection makes it possible that intersection protocols might have been of use. Getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” including the penalty for drunk driving and for killing a cyclist would have prevented this wreck, most likely.

More on the pedestrian death in Central Park. Cyclist-pedestrian crash deaths rare, as are resulting lawsuits and Did a Cycling App That Turns Casual Rides Into Time Trials Play a Role in the Central Park Bike Death? Ugghhh! If the media would spend anywhere near the amount of ink on people getting killed by people driving on the sidewalk (about 50 a year in NYC) as they did on the third cycling death since 2006 then maybe there would be fewer people killed by people driving on the sidewalks. I mean there have been more people killed by lightning in Central Park than there have been killed by bicycles in the entire city… Not that I am minimizing this death. It is tragic, and deserves every bit of attention paid to it.

I thought this was supposed to make my life better, and the Feed

I got a call this morning from the surgeon I was referred to by the Lab Rat Keeper saying he couldn’t see me because he wasn’t on my insurance network. I thought my insurance was supposed to make my life easier not more stressful. Now I have to log into my insurance provider’s information page, find my policy, and find a doctor I can get to who is also in my network, make another appointment, do the consultation, and then after all that maybe I can get this huge lump removed from my neck so I can wear a helmet while riding my bike and finish a cup of coffee or can of soda without pain. Seriously, I feel like using bad language about this, which is something I almost never do except as something to make a joke.

Up first, a potential weapon in the war on distracted driving. New device in the works to catch texting drivers And in reply to the comment about creating a detector for such a device, ain’t gonna happen, the device detects a cell phone sending a text without creating any electronic signature of its own. Broadly put, it’s a radio receiver tuned to the frequency of a texting cell phone and is no more detectable than any other receiver.

Update on a hit-from-behind wreck in NM. UNM student charged in cyclist’s death to appear in court Drunk, (slightly) and high on pot (that must have been some good weed if they could still smell it on him and detect it in his blood a day later). Also hit-and-run drivers should never be allowed bail as they have already demonstrated a propensity to flee as long as they retain the ability to do so.

An OH wreck with most of the information blacked out by LEO. Teen bike rider injured after crash with car I see a completely undamaged bike supposedly ridden by the victim but I can’t tell if that brake handle is connected to a brake because of the unfortunate choice of background (the officer’s black pants). The undamaged bike strongly indicates a sideswipe wreck where the weapon vehicle struck the cyclist without ever hitting the bike. That would indicate hit-from-behind protocols as the best method to avoid but absent more information I really hesitate to make any recommendations about the wreck.

A CT cyclist suddenly finds himself getting “up close and excessively personal” with a motor vehicle. Bicycle Rider Injured In Ellington Car Collision Car making a U-turn means no reaction time for the cyclist as the turn would have begun after passing the car going the opposite direction, leaving infrastructure that separated the cyclist from drivers doing stupid things that could get cyclists killed the only way to prevent this wreck.

Update on a DE wreck. Police believe they have Audi that hit Hockessin cyclist I sincerely hope they catch and imprison the driver of the weapon vehicle for a very long time as it looks like the cyclist was hit riding the opposite shoulder of the road from the direction of travel for the weapon vehicle. This makes avoiding the wreck even harder than previously assumed, from “very difficult” to “OMG WTF!?!”. The cyclist was hit on the inside of a turn the driver obviously cut.

Another wreck in CA. Cyclist Injured Over the Weekend On PCH Mode not given but the injuries are consistent with a buzz job gone really bad so preliminary advice is going to be hit-from-behind protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get that infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.

Our Daily Ted. Morning Links: Pasadena bike club refuses to support Gran Fondo in bike-unfriendly Beverly Hills Why should cyclists support a city that has shown so little support for doing anything for cyclists besides take their money?

Still in CA, some Infrastructure! news. New traffic law take effect today to improve cyclist safety I do wish they had chosen a better picture than the salmon cyclist dodging the skateboarder in the bike lane to illustrate this article.

Infrastructure news from OH. Bicycle safety stressed at memorial for slain cyclist The reason I put this one in “infrastructure” instead of “lifestyle” was the calls for enforcement and bike lanes in the original link.

I can think of no greater indictment against a locale’s infrastructure than this headline. One cyclist a day is killed or injured on Lancashire’s roads

And a further indictment against the entire UK. John O’Groats to Land’s End cyclists warned over safety At least one fatality every year!

I’m thinking this guy doesn’t spend too much time on the roads… Opinion: There is no war between motorists and cyclists That would be technically correct in that it’s more of a slaughter of unarmed non-combatants by the forces of motordom than an actual “war”. Wars usually have casualties on both sides, and I have yet to read of a cyclist hitting a car and killing everyone on board in any of my reports from Australia. It is worth noting that this is from the same corporate group that brings Faux Nooz to the US…

Maybe we will need these less if we get infrastructure built to CROW standards? The black box for CYCLISTS: Bike helmet has built-in data recorder to capture the moment a person crashes I find it funny that the country with the greatest mode share for cycling in the world also has the lowest helmet-wearing rate and cyclist death rate.

Getting the post out with both Friday and Saturday Feeds

I related in a very late post yesterday how I spent most of my day yesterday riding buses or waiting to ride buses as I did a little shopping and helped Mrs. the Poet get to her part-time job. Now I have to get the links for yesterday and today posted and available. This is like Monday without the benefit of a calm and reflective Sunday before it.

Up first is a report on a cyclist killed near El Paso. Dedicated cyclist Tom Veljic killed in December car crash Nothing on the mode of the wreck or even which vehicles were involved, but this is more about the victim than how he died.

A wreck “Joisey”. Clifton Police identify man killed while riding bicycle on Route 3 I don’t believe the account about the cyclist “crossing” the road absent viewing the actual physical evidence, but the bare fact of the hit-and-run is enough to declare fault in this wreck. In my book any hit-and-run is automatically the fault of the driver that flees the scene. And all hit-and-run drivers should be forced to watch their cars get recycled, from the inside of the car if they killed someone.

A cyclist visiting Oz from a country where they ride on both the right and “correct” side of the road salmons to his death. Killed cyclist riding wrong way down road This is one of the problems with having different countries requiring different sides of the road to ride/drive on, if you come from one and then move to or visit another you can wind up dead. I can’t offer much advice on this one except to remember where you are and which side of the road they drive on.

Irony from the NY Post as they count up the number of people killed my motor vehicles while ranting about “dangerous” bicycles in an ad under the article. B’klyn mean streets and the article they have linked under this litany of motor vehicle death and destruction Getting a jump on rogue cyclists Note that more than 15K people were injured enough to require a police report, but instead of actually doing something about the causes of these injuries and deaths, they assign 3K people to give tickets to delivery cyclists trying to make a living that seldom injure and haven’t killed anyone since 2009… Talk about your misplaced priorities.

And those are all the live links that had something to do with cycling that were not about racing.
