Brexit and Witch on a Bicycle

Yes Brexit does have an effect on us here at Casa de El Poeta. One of our spawn is living in Edinburgh, and has naturalized. Now she gets to vote in the next Scottish Independence election. Hopefully this time they won’t allow the rest of the UK to decide if Scotland wants to leave.

But seriously, the pound had the worst single-day decline in value since Germany post-WWI, and I’m just guessing that the mark was worse during hyperinflation… Nope, this was even worse than that according to Wikipedia. The mark never lost as much in a single day as the pound did yesterday.

The money that the right was “promising” would go to the NHS? If it ever existed, the loss of value in the pound wiped all that and more. I’m more inclined to think it was a “political” promise, worth exactly as much as unicorn farts and fairy dust, only less real. After all unicorns did exist at one time (European rhinoceroses with single long horns existed at the end of the ice age) and their intestinal gas is now long dispersed, the £350 million per week to the NHS was pure fantasy. I’m not sure if my daughter still works for the NHS or not, but this will seriously effect her even if she’s no longer working for them. After all NHS is pretty much the only game in town, or not in town if you live in the countryside.

I suppose the takeaway from this is to beware the power of stupid people in large numbers, because they can hurt you.

I cooked dinner tonight, and the Feed

Well most of it anyway. We splurged and bought 3/4 of a pound of chicken livers because I haven’t had chicken livers in years. Part of the reasons for that is Mrs. the Poet refuses to go through the mess and bother of cooking them, primarily because she can barely eat them. I wrapped about half a pound of bacon around the livers and fried them up, a preparation method that leaves the livers so that I love them, and Mrs. the Poet will at least have a couple of ounces total uncooked weight so she gets some protein in her meal. Anyway that takes a while to cut the bacon strips in half, wrap them around the livers, and fry them up. So I ended up losing about an hour from the filtering process preparing the blog post, but as this was Friday and I have to wait until after midnight to finish filtering I could afford to take the time out for cooking. And they were goooooood

Yesterday was a busy day, and the Feed

Yesterday was another day spent mostly away from Casa de El Poeta, being a volunteer for the HRC and mostly riding DART. I had to miss morning services because it took all morning to get from home to the bowling alley where HRC was holding their fund-raiser (Carnibowl), specifically that part of the morning when morning services were held. I got done early enough to make it to evening services at church, and then home to catch up on my e-mails. I finally got caught up on those about 0145, so I decided to just bag it and head to bed.

This morning was interesting mostly because we got checks for a class settlement for getting ripped off by Wells Fargo when we had our mortgage through them, to the tune of nearly $800 total for the six years involved in the settlement.

More stuff arrived, and the Feed

The new Crock Pot™, and the tires and engine for the Mini Sprint-T arrived via USPS this morning. I have already measured the tires and all I have to do to make them the perfect size is figure out how to inflate them on the wheels until the glue dries or otherwise hold the simulated beads of the tires up against the simulated flanges of the wheels. They are molded with the beads a scale 7″ apart (0.28) causing the sidewalls to be a scale 9″ wide (0.36) when they need to be 8″ apart and 10″ wide respectively. One way I can see of doing this would be to glue one bead to the outside flange of the wheel then put a tiny bit of AB expanding foam inside the tire to push it to the inside flange of the wheel, then glue it in place if needed.

The engine kit was fully chromed, as in everything on the sprue was covered in vacuum-sprayed aluminum. This will simulate a highly-polished aluminum block and heads which the 1:1 car will not have (as much as I would like to put an aluminum block SBC in the Sprint-T), but which will make the model stand out should I decide to put it in a car show.

Hit-and-run down in MD. Cyclist killed in collision with car in St. Mary’s County and UPDATE: Bicyclist in California Killed in Hit and Run Accident The picture shows a bicycle hit straight from behind, but I can’t read the speedlimit sign visible in the picture because of excessive glare from the camera flash reflecting from the sign.

There was also a DE wreck. Cyclist Injured in Crash on Bay Rd. in Frederica The street views show a highway with a 55 MPH speed limit and driveways running right into the road, or IOW a “stroad”. The wreck narrative indicates a cyclist trying to get to or from one of the commercial establishments on the opposite side of the road. There were not many crossing points in the median.

A Detroit-area cyclist is killed. Canton cyclist hit by car, killed Sunday I know riding a bike feels like magic, but we can’t “appeared all of a sudden“. The victim was there all along, just because you didn’t process his existence until impact doesn’t mean cyclists can violate the laws of physics. If the driver didn’t see the cyclist, then it is highly likely the driver was driving too fast for conditions. The video indicated the cyclist was “crossing”, but the text does not and there were no pictures of the bike that I can use to determine the direction of impact. So until otherwise treat this as a cyclist not allowing enough time to get clear of the street.

The most deadliest state to ride a bike kills another cyclist. Port Richey bicyclist killed in crash on U.S. 19 Again the cyclist was “in the intersection” but no direction of travel was given. So this could be any mode of wreck that just happened to be in an intersection. And I looked up the intersection claimed for the wreck and I strongly suspect either a stale green or excessively short green as a possible cause of the wreck because the one street is basically just an access road between shopping centers.

A PA cyclist appears to have been right hooked or left crossed. Elderly cyclist injured after being hit by car Friday night The narrative is not specific, but it is highly suggestive as the cyclist was not accused of either having not enough lights or running a traffic control and the driver was “trying to get on a ramp” to a highway.

My car is shipping east, and the Feed

According to the Amazon Package Tracker my model kit left Anaheim headed east in a slow semi trailer at 0508 PST, but my take is it went into said trailer at 0508 and probably is leaving as I type this. Now it is possible that they loaded the trailers yesterday and it left this morning but as I am always prepared for the worst while hoping for the best I’m gonna stick with “tossed into the trailer at 0508” scenario. That and the fact that I worked in such a facility many moons ago back when I was a strapping young poet with few marketable skills besides the ability to run a MS-DOS computer and muscles to here. And for those not old enough to remember MS-DOS was a text-based OS with a command line interface, and you had to remember the commands to use to get the computer to do things. And also which floppy disk was program and which one was data for that program. I’m going to let you Google what a floppy disk is. It was a dark time when the internet was still controlled by DARPA and BBS ruled the cyberscape… Again they are not supposed to have the package with my car here any sooner than Wednesday, and no later than next Monday, so there is still lots of time yet.

And 74 years ago today because of a paperwork error that caused Japan’s Declaration of War to be delivered late, Pearl Harbor was attacked without warning. When you read the links today you’ll know why I made “paperwork error” a thing in that paragraph.

Now in America’s Paradise they aren’t fooling around. Cyclist injured in hit-and-run on Topeka Boulevard If the location given on the map embedded in the article is accurate, all I can say is “why?” That location was shown as the frontage road for the major road, and the cyclist was hit from behind, then left to fend for himself. Standard diatribes against hit-and-run “drivers” apply.

Infrastructure in MD. Montgomery County pushing forward with Bicycle Master Plan A plan with no budget is nothing.

Davidsonville man spared jail time for assault on cyclist after crash Only a $142.50 and 15 hours in community service for assault with a deadly weapon, assault, and leaving the scene of a wreck? And whaddya know, build it and they will come. Women cyclists already surpassing cycle track targets They seriously understate the increase in women cycling going from 23% to 32% as an increase of 9%, my calculations are that’s a 39% increase in women.

First link from outside North America is a bit strange. Taxi driver and passenger assaulted by cyclist in Govanhill OK the cyclist beat up two people. Two questions” 1) How could he beat up people inside a light armored vehicle? I’m assuming the doors were locked while the vehicle was in motion. 2) There were 2 of them and only the one “of slim build” cyclist how did the cyclist manage to beat up two against one? And again they were inside a light armored vehicle while he was out in the weather. Methinks there is much more to the story than is presented in the press. The delay in reporting the incident also raises red flags.

In the meanwhile, this wreck is being treated as attempted murder. Police treating cyclist being knocked down as attempted murder and Cyclist in critical condition after collision which police are treating as attempted murder The driver attempted to run over a LEO while escaping the initial wreck, which led LEO to decide the wreck may have been deliberate and no “accident”.

And more on the idiot doing more than 50 MPH on a curve posted as safe for 30 MPH and hitting a cyclist on the opposite side of the road. Dangerous driver who killed Ormskirk cyclist jailed for two years The “I was being tailgated” excuse is as flimsy as a wet Kleenex.

But they let this guy slide almost completely. Driving ban and curfew for driver who killed cyclist Again I would put the “ban” in quotes because it’s only a ban if someone is checking on him. Otherwise it’s a minor inconvenience at worst because he has to driver exactly within the laws to avoid getting pulled over.

But in this case where the driver was a danger to other drivers… Dash cam footage of dangerous overtaking lands driver in jail in UK first No one was killed, or even injured in this incident, but the driver got 8 months behind bars and a 4 month longer driving ban than the killer in the previous paragraph. On the other side of the country from that wreck another driver is charged in a cyclist’s death. I know what will stop wrecks like this, but I don’t know how well it would fly in the current legislative climate. When you hit a cyclist you lose your car, 90 days if there was no or non-serious levels of injury, a year for transport to hospital wrecks, and forever if the cyclist dies from injuries or in case of hit-and-run.

Not a bicycle wreck, but indicative of what you could expect as a cyclist if you get hit. NYPD: “No Criminality” as Cab Driver Runs Over Kids on Bronx Sidewalk and TLC: Driver Who Hit Children on Bronx Sidewalk Works for Uber [Updated] The car went completely across the sidewalk and bounced off the building that a commenter stated was 20-25 feet away from the curb, and in the video I thought I saw the left front wheel pointed towards the camera which means the suspension was broken when it hit the curb. I estimate the vehicle speed at 40-50 MPH. But the NYPD doesn’t suspect any criminality for driving 40-50 MPH on the sidewalk full of kids… TANJ!

Grocery day again, and the Feed

Still looking at a low-budget grocery day, but we’re still cool. Just waiting for Mrs. the Poet’s retirement check and all, taking the money out of my massage budget. The budget will cover the stuff we need to buy this week. So don’t worry, I’m not going to starve, or anything like that.
