The grass is partly mowed, and the Feed

The short answer to the “Huh!?!” question of the headline, I ran out of gas both actually and metaphorically and will have to continue operations tomorrow. From what I could see from this morning’s efforts the mower needs some extensive maintenance to continue operation, if the trail of leaking gasoline from the primer pump is an indication. Fortunately I have a vehicle capable of transporting the mower to a repair shop now, thanks to Francis/es.

Up first is not a wreck, but a sad fact of life for cyclists. Police investigate downtown strong-armed robbery Since as cyclists we are not encased in a light armored cocoon it is very easy for someone to walk (or run) up to us and deprive us of our possessions, including the bike we are riding. I have no suggestions aside from learning unarmed combat techniques that employ your bike as in this movie

From CA we get more on the gentle caress on the wrist for a killer driver who was still over the DUI limit more than 12 hours after she hit-and-run a group of cyclists, killing one. Los Angeles woman sentenced to 4 years for killing cyclist, injuring 2 others in 2013 DUI crash And by my count 44 months is 4 months shy of 4 years, unless you’re using some exotic 11-month calendar.

Ted Rogers sees thing pretty much the same way in today’s Daily Ted. Morning Links: Wrist slap for drunken hit-and-run killer; Breaking Away’s Dave Stoller was sort-of real Lots of really interesting links in that post there Ted.

I keep telling people how not to get hit by a train, but this one has lots of people wondering. Questions linger after death of avid bicyclist in train collision Here is what I think are the facts on this wreck: Experienced cyclist with thousands of miles on her personal odometer, riding on a bike path that runs parallel to the tracks until a right-angle turn to cross the tracks and continue on the other side, no crossing guard on the bike path and the signals for the nearby road crossing are not visible from the bike path, when traffic is heavy on the adjacent road the noise level gets pretty high and the wreck was near the peak traffic time of the day for that road. So we get no signals, no crossing guards, and an environment loud enough to drown out an oncoming train, leading to an experienced cyclist crossing directly in front of a train.

They have a picture of the suspect in a NYC hit-and-run that killed a cyclist. Police Seek This Man For Allegedly Killing Cyclist & Driving Away If you see this man remember that he has to be taken alive so no hammers over 2 pounds head weight, don’t use the claw or pick end, and nothing to the head. Besides leg and arm blows are more effective in restraining the suspect without making him un-triable. If he can’t understand the charges because of brain damage he walks.

Still in NYC NYPD is hanging on to bikes of dead cyclists instead of releasing them to plaintiff’s attorneys for use in their civil cases against drivers at fault for killing the cyclists. NYPD Refuses To Return Bike Of Slain Williamsburg Cyclist This is actually a crime, and the person preventing this could be subject to prosecution and imprisonment.

Local bicyclist slowly recovering after wreck at Little 500 The headline is more than a little misleading as the race isn’t until next month. This was a training/practice wreck.

And those are all the links that gave me fits and giggles today, more fits than giggles but that’s the way of the world. Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug.

Running late again from the neck cracker, and the Feed

Here I am again starting this post right about dinner time because I spent half the day getting to and from the chiropractor. The good news is I’m getting better, they almost have the pelvic tilt straightened up as long as I keep the lift in my shoe. The even better news is now they are moving on to fix other things that have been not right, like the shoulder that keeps me from being able to raise my arm much above horizontal or rotate my palm as far as the good arm. My good arm has 270° rotation at the wrist when I combine the rotations from the elbow down with the shoulder, the bad arm as a little over 180 or basically from the elbow down only. Between throwing wood for the camp fire and loading Francis/es for trips around the camp site I didn’t do it any good this past weekend either. But as I said, things are improving.

Up first for your anger management class testing is the news that the cabbie who cut off the foot of a British tourist in NYC last summer as he was trying to hit a cyclist and drove onto the sidewalk is back driving a cab. Cabbie Who Maimed Tourist In Midtown Is Driving Taxi Again Yeah, I’m angry and upset about it too, but what can you do? The DA refused to even charge the guy after he publicly admitted he was assaulting the cyclist (who had only minor injuries) when he ran over the tourist.TANJ!

Closer to home a rare sentence that is almost fitting for a drunk driver that ran over a TX cyclist. El Paso woman sentenced to 10 years in prison in bicyclist’s death She will be eligible for probation in another 5 years, but I didn’t see anything about her losing her license to drive.

The cyclist that survived the double collision in NOLA when a blind driver hit two cyclists from behind with an empty lane to the left of the wreck is making great strides to recovery. Cyclist injured in deadly crash making strides At this point they are not saying if he will recover the use of his legs, but reported signs are hopeful. The driver was still in jail as of the last report on that situation. That makes almost a week that hitting those cyclists has kept him from reaching his destination for the day.

A MI cyclist is injured while having a separate medical emergency and does not have wearable ID. Deputies seek public’s help identifying injured cyclist found near Dutton This is another reminder of why wearable ID is not just a good idea.

And here is our Daily Ted. Morning Links: Torrance father rides for his daughter, and court hearings for Wendy Villegos and Jose Gonzales I have a suggestion for the DUI driver that killed the cyclist, if no prison then force her to ride a bicycle for a period of 10 years instead, with some way of monitoring her location and speed to make sure she only walks or rides that bike wherever she goes.

A metric buttload of links, and the rest of the Feed

Yep, three days since the last list of wrecks results in lots of wrecks, whodathunkit? Also I’m kinda distracted by the Sprint Cup race that was postponed from yesterday on the tube. That wreck that took Junior out was truly weird. I’m no big fan of the Junior Nation but I don’t bear any ill will to Dale Jr. at all, especially not for the kind of wreck like that. Now Jimmy Johnson getting his car damaged without hurting himself or anyone else, that I’m cool with. I have a lot of antipathy about Jimmy that I can’t explain, because when Richard Petty was equally dominant I had nothing like that against him, likewise Darrell Waltrip back in the 80′s. In fact I knew Darrell back then and used to hang out in his speed shop on my days off. Of course I was racing mostly-stock econoboxes on courses defined by rubber traffic cones in parking lots, not in stock cars back then.

Up first is a local story to WoaB World HQ. Cyclist hit by DART train near Lawnview Station The question on this one is did the cyclist fall down because he was hit by the train, or was he hit by the train because he fell down, and if that’s true why did he fall down? Still he was hit by a train on the platform, which implies he was wanting to use the train (DART has bike racks on all their trains). So just maybe a matter of standing back on the platform?

I think the Big Story is the cyclist fatally right-hooked in Boston last week. Bicyclist killed in Charlestown hit-and-run and Somerville truck yard searched after cyclist killed in Sullivan Square crash also Truck sought in fatal hit-and-run and this one Arrest made in connection with Boston hit and run finally Alleged Charlestown Hit-and-Run Driver Bail Set at $5,000 Right hook means the cyclist had virtually no reaction time from the witness descriptions so unable to apply intersection protocols to avoid. Only way to survive this would be infrastructure that completely separated bicycle and heavy truck traffic, or in cases where that was not physically possible making operators of heavy mass killing machines liable for wrecks with bicycles and pedestrians.

Next up is a strange and bizarre wreck where the cyclist injured was just more collateral damage to a wreck that started well before the weapon vehicle even got to her. Cyclist injured, a dozen cars damaged in wreck at college and Driver Hits Cars, Bicyclist on Park Street As I read the links, the driver began having a medical issue that made him a passenger in the vehicle a few blocks before pushing another car into the cyclist, then continuing down the street bouncing off parked cars before finally doing enough damage to the weapon vehicle to cause it to stop, where the driver got out, walked a few steps and then collapsed unconscious. This is something that only barrier-protected infrastructure could even have a chance of preventing. I mean what can you do about an unconscious driver? The driver certainly can’t do anything about it. This is a wreck that I expect to see even fewer of than we do now after the full rollout of the ACA catches people who had hidden medical conditions before they turn into life-altering events. I mean right now it’s a 3 or 4 a year thing, but I expect it to become one or none per year after the ACA is fully implemented.

Continuing on the bizarre wreck theme a salmon cyclist avoiding a vehicle in the bike lane is part of a multi-vehicle wreck. 3 injured in crash involving bicycle in St. Augustine and Cyclist in critical condition after hit by car OK Lots of blame to go around in this one. First is the truck driver that made the right turn into the bike lane, the cyclist would have been hit from behind had he been going the right direction in the lane. Second the cyclist should not have been riding salmon. The rest of the victims seem to have been innocent bystanders caught up in the wreck. This was such a fluster cluck I can’t say how to avoid it, but I know in this case the number of victims would have been far less had the cyclist not been riding salmon.

Still in the once-again most deadly state in the US to walk or ride a bicycle we get a driver running a red light and hitting two people crossing on bicycles. Bicyclists injured after driver runs red light Nothing the cyclists or infrastructure could do to prevent this wreck as the driver was ignoring a traffic control already. Witness reports had the driver enter the intersection several seconds after the red light. Fortunately neither cyclist was killed or suffered life-altering injury.

Still in FL we get a hit-from-behind hit-and-run. Family pleads for driver in cyclist’s death to come forward Since the cyclist was not hit in the road but on the shoulder the fact of no lights or reflectors should be moot, especially since the time bracket of the wreck straddled local sunrise. Anyway protocols to avoid or mitigate damages, and infrastructure to prevent. Dutch infrastructure, not the paint on the side of the road “infrastructure” we get in the US.

On the theme of red-light runners we get this hit-and-run in AZ. Deputies search for car that hit young rider on Tucson’s NW side The kid was hit in the crosswalk crossing with adult supervision and the crossing light. The driver ran from the scene without even checking to see if the kid was OK. Intersection protocols might have helped avoid or mitigate damages, but as the driver ignored the built infrastructure changing the physical infrastructure would only change the location of the wreck.

An incomplete wreck report from CO. Cyclist seriously injured after being hit by car Basically they know a cyclist was hit somewhere in the city and that’s pretty much it as I read the post today.

A NYC report shows why you need to have wearable ID in case your wallet gets stolen after the wreck. Police Need Help Identifying Cyclist Critically Injured By Cab Since the only witness reporting to the police was the driver of the weapon vehicle no charges have been filed. Also nothing about the mode is currently known.

Assault charges filed against a driver? Police: Driver intentionally hit Portland cyclist and A PDX Driver Faces Punishment for Hitting a Cyclist, For Once, And It’s Steep. Multiple witnesses reported the driver deliberately rammed the cyclist by swerving into him at a stop light. Unfortunately in the days since this happened people have found a way to blame the cyclist for being the victim of the assault.

First of several links from CA. Cyclist struck, killed Thursday identified as Livermore man, 48 SWCC wreck as the only surviving witness was the driver of the weapon vehicle. Intersection wreck so all the protocols apply, and getting the infrastructure up to Dutch would prevent similar wrecks.

First link from Ted today is not happy. Update — Bike rider killed in Coachella collision The update places this as a classic SWSS. You know what I think of those, but protocols to avoid, and infrastructure would make the “swerve” impossible.

Next link is also not fun. Update — bike rider killed in Huntington Beach hit-and-run Apparent red light runner and since the driver ran we can assume that was the red light runner as well because the innocent don’t run. Intersection wreck so use the protocols to “do something” about the wreck for cyclists, and get the infrastructure up to Dutch to prevent.

Something Nice from BikingInLA. A brief look at Sunday’s successful, stress-free Wilshire CicLAvia I wish we could get something like this here in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell, Home of 3 miles of bike lanes (if you count both directions) and 1000 miles of streets.

Hail hail, it didn’t happen here, and the Feed

Fortunately for us the baseball sized hail that hit north Texas bypassed Casa de El Poeta in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. All we got was a big breeze and a few more branches lost from the trees in the neighborhood, than have not fared well this winter/spring. We have some people who are just now finishing up clearing the debris from the December ice storm, and now we have further storm debris to clean up. And as you may have read we had another shooting at Ft. Hood, a long bike ride down the road in Killeen. I feel for my brothers in green, and wonder what can be realistically done about the situation. I mean we spend months teaching people how to kill, and knowingly send them into situations where a significant number of people are going to be psychologically damaged, then bring them back home and toss them back into the rest of society with no treatment until they snap. The shooter in this case had already had a minor break and was getting treatment, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Up first is more on that brutal hit-and-run in Boston. Cyclist Involved in Serious Hit & Run Accident in Charlestown More in it does appear to be a right hook, and where an earlier report said they had the driver and weapon vehicle it now says they are still looking. Still they know at least that it was a garbage truck and they don’t have many to look through to find it.

Just a few miles west (Texas “few”) we get another MA hit-and-run. 17-year-old bicyclist injured in hit-and-run in Easthampton Location and debris suggest a hit-from-behind wreck, hopefully LEO will have enough debris to use micro tags in the paint to identify at least the make and year of manufacture of the vehicle if the part had factory paint on it.

A CA report on a driver charged with murder after leaving a social media message that he was going on a “death ride”. Pleasanton teen accused of murder in fatal crash was tailgating, witness testifies I hope the driver never gets out of prison. If he does I hope that he is never allowed to use any motorized transport for the rest of his life, unless he’s being transported to a hospital by an ambulance. Since this is in CA I suspect he’ll get 20 years, serve 10 and be eligible to apply for a new license as soon as he gets out of the prison gate.

A poorly-worded wreck report from the state that is once again most deadliest place to walk or ride a bike in the US. Driver apprehended after fleeing hit-and-run scene The Street View Shows a very bicycle-unfriendly route that is the only crossing of the freeway for over a mile to the south and 3/4 of a mile to the north. If the cyclist was a gutter bunny or sidewalk rider then he would have been in the actual offramp while crossing.

Also from FL comes a suggestion of why not being inside a building or car is so dangerous for people living in or visiting that state. Doreen Landstra, Elderly Woman Who Killed 3 In Car, Gets Suspended License That’s right, no prison time, she gets to keep the car and in a few months she can drive again after killing 3 people in the second time she “mistook” the gas for the brake pedal.

More on the drunk driver getting 8 years for killing a cyclist in Jolly Olde. Drunk, speeding, hit and run van driver who killed cyclist sentenced to eight years in jail and Drunken van driver jailed for eight years after killing Folkingham cyclist I think the sweetest thing about this is the 10 year driving ban doesn’t start until he completes all of his period of incarceration, and can not be reduced via “good behaviour”.

Also in the UK a cyclist “wins” a door prize. Cyclist injured in crash It isn’t often we get a report on a wreck like this from the UK because of their media laws. Since this wreck happened very close to the intersection I suspect the cyclist was trying to avoid getting hooked and rode in the door zone to escape.

And a speeding police car with lights and sirens going must still wait until it is safe to pass a cyclist in Jolly Olde. Injured cyclist wins his damages action and Injured cyclist wins damages action From what I’m reading the cyclist was hit at a pinch point where the cyclist would have had to get on the sidewalk to avoid getting hit because the actual road surface was too narrow to fit a car and a cyclist together without overlap, and the cyclist was hit as far over (to the left because they drive on the wrong side of the roads there) as he could get. Had the driver been going the speed limit or slightly faster than the limit the cyclist would have been able to get to safety but at the speed the weapon vehicle was travelling the cyclist did not have time to clear the pinch point.

That video of a cyclist getting hit from behind at a traffic light that went viral from Oz has resulted in quick retribution from the legal system. Woman fined over cyclist crash I’m just disappointed I had to find this in the comments section of another link instead of the day after it as put up in the Feed folder.

Today’s link from BikingInLA. Morning Links: It’s bike video Friday, Fig4All finally gets a hearing, and meet the real star of Breaking Away

I am still praying for the day when the last of these goes up because that was the last cyclist to ever get hit with a car. ‘Ghost bike’ reminder of cyclists’ danger As I recall the cyclist was hit because the vehicle driver failed to pass with enough room while trying to pass a line of bicycles.

Infrastructure! news from the next town over from WoaB World HQ. Richardson Gets Safe Routes To School Every school should have safe routes as the default condition, because every route would be safe for kids to travel. I still don’t know why this has not been in the “plan” until now.

Article on why cycling feels so unsafe in Oz. Australian journalists wage war on cycling and as an example of that “war” A plea to all cyclists and drivers The driver in the second link is blaming the cyclist for his changing lanes into a lane he could not see clearly was empty or occupied.

Whee! back to the grind, and the Feed

Activities at my church are ramping back up, and I will have fewer evenings free than I did over the winter. I see that as a good thing because I will have more interactions with human beings. They drive me crazy some times but not being around them is even worse. So, humans, can’t live with them, can’t live long without them.

Up first, remember back when I said a motor vehicle was the perfect murder weapon in Texas as long as you didn’t know the person you hit? This guy doesn’t read my blog. Cyclist Hit by Truck, Police Believe Incident Was Intentional Nothing on the mode but given the slight amount of injury the cyclist sustained I would say the assault was defused to a buzz job.

A person apparently driving a decommissioned cop car hit-and-run a cyclist. Tulsa Police: Vehicle That Hit Bicycle Rider Wasn’t Theirs The story was originally reported as an unmarked cop car doing the H&R, but the local PD did a check on their cars and announced it wasn’t one of theirs. The rest of the narrative has an intersection wreck that probably the cyclist had the right of way. Since they seem to be going out of their way to not blame the cyclist this is probably the truth of the matter. So this would be on the “unavoidable by human cyclists” list and as the cyclist had the right of way one that physical infrastructure would have little influence over as you sometimes have to cross streets in urban areas like this.

Two links from SC on a cyclist hit by a right-turning vehicle. Coroner identifies cyclist killed in collision with vehicle and Bicyclist killed Wednesday in collision with truck at Bluff Road and Rosewood Drive. I’m conflicted about this one, mainly because I’m getting conflicting reports about what happened. The official story is the cyclist was hit while riding salmon. But there is another report that the cyclist was coming out of the parking lot adjacent to the intersection and waiting for the light to cross the street to be on the right side of the road for her return trip. What this boils down to is single-mode infrastructure killing people not using that mode to access the infrastructure.

Hit-and-run in CA. Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crash outside Winters It appears to be another hit-from-behind wreck, so protocols to avoid or reduce damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent. This wreck was on the Putah Creek TT course, so it’s conceivable the victim was practicing for the event planned for this weekend.

Also in CA is this additional link to the guilty no-contest plea of a cyclist-killing driver. Woman Pleads No Contest in Boyle Heights Cyclist Death My disgust at this “almost-human” prevents me from making any further comment.

Up the coast a bit from CA we get this wreck in America’s Copenhagen. Biker hurt after hitting car in NE Portland Since the wreck was described as an intersection wreck and they are not blaming the cyclist for running a red it would appear the driver ran the red on this one. Again intersection wreck, use the protocols to avoid. And we get more information from another source local to the wreck Collision at Killingsworth and Cully injures man on bike – UPDATED Something bothering me with this new information is the possibility of the cyclist being involved in a pinball wreck, as the ball, getting bounced from one vehicle to another. Cyclist making a left turn gets in the turn lane, driver takes umbrage at the cyclist not being in the bike lane and moves into the cyclist and the now out-of-control ballistic mess that is the cyclist hits the vehicle in the cross street. Of course the wreck did not happen in TX but I have been “herded” by drivers who didn’t think I belonged in the turn lane. his could have just been a slightly more violent version of that.

A report on a NJ cyclist killer shows he is a murderous b*****d. Man facing trial for killing cyclist in hit-and-run is now charged with beating a Rutgers university student to death And no you’re not seeing things, this is a UK media outlet making the report. And I had almost forgotten about this wreck that seemed like it was deliberate back when it happened, now I am even more convinced that this wretched excuse for a human being crossed the lane on purpose. He is a serial killer whose first taste of murder didn’t satisfy.

From Oz, Don’t Hit The Pedestrians! even when they walk right in front of you in the bike lane. Cyclist knocks pedestrian unconscious Cyclist riding past a transit stop, pedestrian steps off the curb into the bike lane right in front of him, then things get fuzzy because the pedestrian doesn’t remember anything between that and waking up surrounded by people trying to help him. At this point we still don’t have the cyclist’s side of the story. But seriously if you hit a pedestrian stay with them until medical help arrives or they walk off on their own.

A teen cyclist is left-hooked in Enn Zed. Teen cyclist injured in Tauranga You would think that all the vehicles that were passing would belie the “high speed” statement from the previous part of the sentence… and that if he was going all that fast drivers would have noticed him to the left before making the left turn. Anyway intersection protocols to avoid or to mitigate damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

Your daily Ted ;) Morning Links: More on MyFig, way too much bad news from upstate, and don’t deal dope from a lightless bike

Infrastructure! news from NYC. NYPD: 914 Pedestrians and Cyclists Injured, Nine Killed in Traffic in February Vision Zero my skinny backside!

And in Oz their latest bit of bike infrastructure was apparently done by a pre-schooler in crayon. Cyclists claim a redesigned intersection in South Brisbane is an accident waiting to happen A bike lane that dead ends in a pedestrian-only space is the least of the problems with this fuster-cluck.

And those were all the links that gave me fits and giggles today. Except the one about the motorcyclist that died because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, I figured your heads would asplode if you tried to read that one before they fixed it and it wouldn’t make any sense to link it after they fixed it.

Another long day, and the Feed

I just got back from a trip to the chiropractor with the usual drama and adventure that entails these days (but I’m getting better, so from my perspective this is worth it). Once again transportation was the issue, with the “check engine” light coming on for no apparent reason. All fluids were checked and found within limits and the temp gauge was also within limits, so lacking a code scanner we had nothing to base a diagnosis on and continued despite the light.

Up first is another wreck in what used to be the most deadly state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Tallahassee Cyclist Hit by Car, Taken to Hospital The narrative had the cyclist running a red light, and the wreckage is certainly consistent with a cyclist getting hit broadside. Intersection protocols to avoid, and infrastructure to prevent. If the cyclist really did run a red and was not just caught by a stale green then one thing I would suggest is placing bicycle signals down where a cyclist could actually see them instead of 20 feet above the intersection where a road cyclist couldn’t get their neck to bend that far to be able to see it.

More about that fatal OH wreck that killed a randoneur. Veteran cyclist killed by minivan knew the dangers all too well At this point I think they should be charging the driver with murder for hitting a conspicuous cyclist on the shoulder of the road with nothing to interfere with his vision. The driver should be proving he didn’t hit the cyclist on purpose when all he had to do to not hit him was to stay on the road on a straight stretch of road with no particular amount of hill.

Also in OH the final word on a bike wreck. Doctor gets 15 days in jail for driving drunk, hitting cyclist I think the word in this case is “F-U”.

Our first Infrastructure! article is from down the road a piece in Houston. Bike safety plan aims to eliminate fatalities I think that in order to eliminate fatalities hey are going to have to eliminate the cause of fatalities, idiots driving cars. Even the LEO with one of the worst windshield biases in the US admit that almost all of the fatal bicycle wrecks involve drivers that are distracted, drunk, asleep, or all of the above, in control of deadly weapons. How to keep the twain apart so that DDA(aota) drivers are physically unable to interact with squishy people riding bicycles will be the defining aspect of the program if they are really committed to the Vision Zero aspect.

Same problem over in Bermuda. We need common sense and courtesy on the roads

Infrastructure news from Jolly Olde. Pothole crash cyclist seeks payout When you can’t dodge one pothole without running in to another one you have too many potholes… Just saying.

Problem infrastructure in Oz as the entire width of a bike lane is covered with a slick bike symbol that gets really slick in the rain. Bike rider badly injured after crashing at problem corner on busy Brisbane road And to the internet toughs calling the cyclist a bad rider for not avoiding the problem, the symbol covers the entire width of the lane and cars encroach on what little lane there is, making dodging the slick spot a case of Russian Roulette. The video shows the actual site of the wreck with the eroded stripe and the bicycle symbol in the apex of the turn near the end of the video.

Today’s main topic from BikingInLA is infrastructure. Popular bikeway to remain open this weekend, scholarship fund for fallen cyclist, and your Morning Links

Light on links despite the pause, and the Feed

Today is day 1.5 without hair, and while my ears are a bit cold without the hair that sometimes draped over the tops of them, my cheeks and chin are the body parts suffering the worst. My beard had gotten to the point that it was a very effective insulator, and losing it all at once was a bit of a shock especially when a chilly wind blows. Wearing a hat takes care of most of the problem with the rest of my head, but there just isn’t anything I have to cover my face that doesn’t look like I’m getting ready to rob someplace.

Even with 3 day’s accumulated links in the folder I just didn’t have much to work with today. I expect that to change when summer arrives in the Northern Hemisphere. But then I was expecting a spike in bike wrecks involving children right after Christmas that never materialized, so who am I to make predictions anymore?

Right now the Big Story is the cyclist hit head-on on his own side of the street last week in NE. Authorities say Neb. woman whose vehicle killed a cyclist was trying to avoid another car and Omaha officials give details of fatal cyclist crash How big a hurry could someone be in to pass a stopped vehicle at speed like that? Or not paying attention to the road in front of them? These links are updates to previous reports linked here.

The other Big Story is an OH man killed while taking part in a 200 mile brevet. Bicyclist fataly injured in Saturday morning crash and Dublin Cyclist Killed During Biking Trip In Miami County Another driver not paying attention to the road in front of him/her. Hit from behind protocols to avoid or to mitigate the damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent. As part of that infrastructure they need to make hitting a vulnerable road user from behind a misdemeanor, and a felony if the person dies as a result of the wreck.

Update on another wreck in OH. Police: Cyclist Hit and Killed By Intoxicated Driver He must have been exceedingly drunk to be charged after a hit-and-run.

Just across the MI-OH border we get another hit-and-run. Monroe bicycle rider seriously injured in hit and run Hit-from-behind at night with nothing about the cyclist’s lighting or lack of indicates this cyclist was at or beyond the legal minimums of lighting. Use the rest of the protocols to avoid, and get the infrastructure right to prevent including that legal change noted above.

A wreck in CT. Two injured in New Milford bicycle crash It is possible to have a serious wreck without a motor vehicle. This is one of the hazards of riding in a peloton, but the only way to learn to ride in a peloton is to ride in a peloton. There is nothing that can simulate it in a safer environment.

Hit-and-run in the former most deadliest state in the US to walk or ride a bike. Bicyclist, 23, critically hurt in hit and run Why am I unsurprised the weapon vehicle is suspected to be a pickup truck? Hit from behind protocols to avoid or mitigate damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent. A big intermediate step that can be done immediately until the physical infrastructure is fixed would be to require all vehicles used by hit-and-run drivers be confiscated and recycled. We don’t give back the guns used in robberies, they get melted down, we should do the same for crimes committed with motor vehicles.

On the other side of the country a driver turns himself in after a hit-and-run. Police: man turns himself in after killing cyclist My inner cynic says he had to wait until he sobered up before he allowed himself to be arrested.

A case of being in the right place at the right time and taking pictures shows a cyclist flying through the air after impact with a motor vehicle. Cyclist hit on the Snake This was on Mulholland in SoCal. The driver was reported as being on the wrong side of the road and the rider going downhill at the speed limit.

UK cyclists hope for a proper sentence in the death of one of their own. Jail term plea after death of Bristol cyclist in Avonmouth One would hope that killing a cyclist would merit a harsher sentence than littering…

Your daily dose of BikingInLA goodness. A year in jail for killer Moorpark driver, cyclist hit by Maserati on Rock Store climb, and your Morning Links

An AZ cyclist discovers that you have to use both halves of the bicycle equation. TUCSON WOMAN IN CRAIGSLIST POST: ‘EITHER THE BIKES GO OR I GO’ For those who don’t know the bicycle equation, it is the solution for N + 1 = S – 1, where N is the number of bikes you currently own and S is the number of bikes that will cause your significant other to leave you and take the dog/cat/kid with him/her. I try to stay well below S – 1.

Apparently nothing can be done about distracted drivers so we should all cower at home and only go out in light armored vehicles. Study: pedestrians and bicyclists should watch out for distracted drivers I firmly believe that treating distracted driving like drunk driving and crushing the vehicles of distracted drivers after a wreck (and widely publicizing it) will cause distracted driving to drop. I suggest putting it on one of those home shopping channels about every 20 minutes or so with a video of the discharge chute of a car shredder and the voice-over saying “Drive distracted and this may be the last time you see your car. Hit someone while driving distracted and this will definitely be the last time you see your car.”

Our first Infrastructure! article comes from north of WoaB World HQ in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. Tulsa’s first mile-long stretch of bike lanes ready to ride, but neighbors split on street design I have to apply the requisite Okie joke that every TX resident must use when reading about our neighbor to the north. “You know why Texas doesn’t drift into the Gulf? This is what happens when single-mode infrastructure is forced to become multi-mode on the cheap. Road Runner: City must act for bikes, cars, streetcars to coexist, Kozachik says Throw a streetcar into the mix with bikes and motor vehicles when there isn’t enough room for bikes and cars together and you will get conflict.

Time to get the groceries, and the Feed

Today is a light day for groceries as all we really need to get is some TP, a loaf of bread, milk and replenish the yogurt supply (eating 4-6 oz. of yogurt a day makes my tummy work betterer). And of course I need to get my salty snacks refilled. The only thing I wish is that the salty snacks were not also the crunchy snacks, because those are a bear to eat when you don’t have any molars left.

Today’s Feed folder was infrastructure-heavy and (fortunately) wreck-light.

Before the bicycle stuff I often get asked why I describe my location as the suburbs of Hell. At Least Austin Traffic Doesn’t Look Like This Any other questions?

Up first they caught the driver that left a cyclist to die outside Houston. League City police arrest, charge woman in hit-and-run that killed cyclist The cyclist managed to stay alive long enough to get to hospital, but died in the ER. I’m still not getting anything on the mode of the wreck directly, but what little I have gotten seems to indicate a hit-from-behind wreck so use those protocols to avoid, and of course get the infrastructure right so that (possibly drunk) drivers are kept away from fragile cyclists.

And this has to be the most often e-mailed story I have ever gotten, there were about 5 different links to the same video, this was just the last one. WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THIS: CYCLIST HIT BY PICKUP TRUCK, MATTRESS CUSHIONS HIS FALL I wonder if this cyclist was Irish, because he certainly was lucky on St.Patrick’s Day. The mattress appears to have come off the back of the truck just as the truck passed the cyclist, reducing the force of the impact considerably and also providing something soft to protect him while sliding across the road surface. If you want to get a good look go to YouTube, set the replay speed to 0.25, and start the video at 0:20.

A CA cyclist gets clobbered by the road (only) in this wreck. Moraga cyclist critically injured after crash in Oakland hills Something made the rider go over the handlebars and as witnesses said there were no other vehicles involved that leaves rider error, bicycle malfunction, or road surface defect. Unless one of the “witnesses” actually did something to cause the rider to flip over the handlebars…

Some slightly good news via Ted Rogers in BikingInLA. Breaking news: Wendy Villegas accepts plea in September hit-and-run death of cyclist Andy Garcia The plea gets her about 20% of the sentence she deserves which means about half of that actually as a guest at the Greybar Hilton. Still better than nothing.

A cyclist is killed by a truck in PA. Bicyclist struck, killed in Monroe Township The cyclist was riding the through street on a 2-way stop when the truck violated his right of way. Nothing the cyclist could have done to avoid this wreck, and infrastructure that doesn’t mix bicycles and semi trucks towing tanker trailers to prevent. Looking at the street view it seems very obvious that the truck driver is at fault in this wreck for failure to yield.

An act of road terror in Bermuda? Fishing line road hazards warning There was some public speculation this was set specifically to rob cyclists as there are a large proportion of the population that use cycling as their primary mode of transportation.

Oz has been dealing with a lot of road mayhem directed at cyclists. VIDEO: Riding on after an ugly week for cyclists Lots of wrecks in there.

Be careful of this link, there is an auto-playing video in it. Sydney cyclist loses function in hand after collision with car Her problems with her arm are strikingly similar to what I have with my leg, except she’s getting nerve surgery to repair the damage and I just get to suffer with mine

What appears to be an entirely infrastructure caused bike wreck. Byron Bay cyclists injured in crash If that was the road they were riding in that picture it appears to have a surface similar to the “baby-head” chip seal we get around here to discourage bicycling on quiet roads. I don’t know what to do about wrecks caused by roads not fit for the purpose, but I see that as becoming more common in the US as state DOTs divert more and more of their budgets from maintenance to construction, leaving existing streets and roads to turn into rubble.

Good luck getting prosecution when you get hit on your bike in Oz, unless you have a camera recording it. Bike riders told to buy cameras to help enforce new laws and protect themselves on the road Yeah, people who get hit by cars should not be the ones that have to prove their innocence when they are the victims.

First of a bunch of lifestyle and infrastructure links as we go back to BikingInLA. LA-style cyclist anti-harassment laws continue to spread, but there’s a catch; plus your Morning Links Some of the links are the same as I put up near the top of the post because we have similar searches going to find them.

Good news from America’s Copenhagen, Portland OR. The Orange Line might secretly be Portland’s biggest bike project ever Sneak a few million $ of bicycle and pedestrian improvements into the “mitigation” portion of a transit project? BRILLIANT!

Big bike projects are cheaper than big car projects for the same capacity, but “cheaper” =/= “cheap”. $60 mil Federally Funded Bike Bridge to Break Ground in Rahm’s Chicago This project has been in the planning stages since the last Daley was in office, Rahm just gets to preside over the ground-breaking.

This is not new, but people are still amazed it exists. This “ski lift for cyclists” helps you get up hills As I understand it this is the only route to what’s on top of the hill and the slope is such that only the most fit cyclists riding the lightest bikes could surmount it consistently.

Historical infrastructure. How did bicycling take over the Netherlands? Their reaction to cars killing large numbers of children in and out of the cars was to make cities and towns suitable for children. Our solution was to make cars into battering rams and add additional armored pods inside to further protect the kids in the cars, and then blame the parents of the kids killed and injured outside the cars for not putting their kids in cars where they were “safe”.

And as the victim of bike theft myself this story just makes me angry. Thieves steal vintage bikes collected for Houston Bicycle Museum

After yesterday’s massive linkfest I got Nuttin today, and the Feed

I didn’t finish up and get to bed yesterday until 0200 because of the number of links and having to do a little site maintenance that WP doesn’t do because it is blog-specific, keeping the place the way I like it. When I got up there was next to nothing in the feed folder. I have a few sites on the web I go to when this happens but the news there is usually older than what I get from the Feed.

Up first is more from/about the SXSW wreck/murder. Third victim of SXSW rampage dies This is exactly the same as if someone shot up the street, except he drove through a pedestrian area and got a lot more with the one bullet than mass shooters get with multiple high-capacity magazines. Also We’re Shamefully Bad at Protecting Pedestrians at Events Like SXSW

This person committed multiple “crimes” when she recorded a police action for her criminal justice class and was not driving a car. Backlash: Student alleges SAPD officers trashed bicycle to punish her

In CA police actually worked with the owner of a stolen bike to recover it. Woman Recovers Stolen Bike Via Sting With Help Of BART Police That would never happen in the Beautiful Suburbs of Hell. Our local PD’s response to bike thefts begins and ends with the completion of the theft report.

Infrastructure of the legal kind to protect people in cars and out from people being zombies on their phones while driving. ‘Jake’s Law’ addresses penalties for distracted driving Until we realize that motor vehicles are weapons of mass destruction when misused and can make ourselves punish people accordingly this will go on. It isn’t the phone people, it’s the car.

A reflector that doesn’t look dorky, and can’t be removed or stolen after the wreck. Brilliant Bike Glows Like the Sun When Headlights Hit It Maybe not quite as effective as the standard bike reflector, but visible from all angles unlike the CPSC reflectors.

I’m not sure if this is a lean steer trike or a unicycle with training wheels. Would you ride the Halfbike? Bizarre one-wheel invention claims to make city cycling more practical (even though you have to steer using a pole) What I do know is this is a very un-aerodynamic vehicle, and that your full weight is on your feet the entire time you are riding the vehicle. Also if the brakes are on the front wheel the high center of gravity of the vehicle is going to result in a faceplant, if they are on the back than the center of gravity means the brakes will be minimally effective without some major rider gymnastics to keep the back wheels planted.

Some race footage from the Australian International Pedal Prix, an endurance racing series and a proving ground for recumbent tricycle vehicles. Australian HPV Super Series – Pedal Prix 24 Hour I love to watch these vehicles in action because they are nearly perfect for road vehicles if cars had never been invented. The rules require multiple riders, many of differing heights and widths especially in the mixed teams where the female riders are usually several inches shorter than the males. Also there are effective headlights and taillights that run for as much as 12 hours straight out of the 24 hour race. About the only thing these vehicles lack is storage for cargo on the road, but that could be fitted behind the rider.

Last link is from Ted Rogers again with a life lesson. Today’s post, in which a terrified little dog reminds us what it means to be brave in the moment

Crazy has escaped to the streets, and the Feed

I have been reading the news and it doesn’t look good for the forces of sanity these days, especially if you are a female with functioning reproductive organs. Those who are not cis-gendered, or who love the wrong people, or don’t make enough money, or have the wrong color skin are doing pretty bad as well and heaven help you if you belong to more than one of the groups mentioned (all you females with functioning reproductive organs and the wrong color skin who love the wrong people, I’m sorry).

Up first, that wreck down in Austin has a stranglehold on the media for the moment. Killeen man named as suspect in South By Southwest tragedy and Tragedy at SXSW: 2 Dead, 23 Injured in Hit-and-Run also Driver in SXSW deadly crash has prior drunk driving record another one Dutch cyclist among two killed after car ploughs into crowd at SXSW festival and more Suspect In SXSW Deadly Crash Identified, Car Was Stolen The driver has a DUI charge and was driving a stolen car, evading arrest at the time of the wreck, and has 25 victims of various charges of assault and murder. Any bets on the over/under on bail? Put me down for a quarter on $500,000.

We get another hit-and-run in the Austin area. Rollingwood police seek driver in crash that injured bicyclist This was a left-cross wreck with injury. Intersection protocols to avoid or to mitigate damages, and get the infrastructure right to prevent.

And just a bit down from Austin, another hit-and-run with video evidence. Video shows suspect in fatal League City hit-and-run Nothing about the mode but with the driver pulling the driver side fender liner from under the car it looks like a left cross with the bike going under the car. Or possibly a buzz pass on the right with the bike going under the car. More League City cyclist killed in hit-and-run collision

Two cyclists were hit in a single wreck in UT. Cyclists killed in early morning crash shared passion for life with friends, family and 2 Lehi cyclists killed ‘almost instantly’, police say Something is not right here, 2 experienced riders with lights and everything do not just pull out in front of a speeding car and get clobbered. I can’t get the address to pull up on Google Street View, so I don’t know what happened in this wreck. It’s just sad.

Another MD cyclist gets killed. Spring Lake Cyclist Killed in Howell Hit and Run Hit-from-behind, protocols to avoid and get the infrastructure right to prevent. And confiscate the cars used in every hit-and-run, shred and recycle the ones used in fatal hit-and-runs.

This one speaks for itself. Minneapolis police reopen cold case of fatal hit and run that killed cyclist James “Jimmy” Nisser Unlike my case where they never investigated the attempted murder, much less went back years later.

A question I asked back when this story first broke a couple weeks ago. I-Team: How did man with eight drunken driving arrests have a valid license? There is a loophole in the law big enough to drive a semi through, that’s how he had a valid license.
