I had a second beer with dinner last night for the first time in years. They had Yuengling Lager on tap, and I found it to be a delightfully drinkable beer, just to my liking with lots of malty and yeasty flavors and just enough hops to keep it interesting and not too sweet. Pity it isn’t available in TX, or at least my part of TX. As I understand it the beer is brewed in PA. And I had another beer earlier that was good, something called a Berkshire I think, but it didn’t really have a character that made it stand out, except to be better than your average American Pilsner. And as that is not a very high bar to clear it doesn’t make my list of beers to have more than one of ever. It is not a very long list, the Yuengling Lager, a few Shiner varieties, a couple Sam Adams, the Heileman’s Special Export, and a couple of local to Dallas craft beers. I drank a lot of IPA because I bought a 12 pack on sale and I wasn’t going to throw them out and they do grow on you after a few bottles. That doesn’t mean I’m going to pursue more unless I get in the mood for one. And I was really disappointed to read the Heileman’s brewery was bought out by Pabst and most of the line was dropped, except for Heileman’s Special Export. I’m assuming they are still bringing the beer inspectors over from Germany to certify it meets their beer purity laws, or should I say hoping rather than assuming.
Up first is another blind driver, this time in MN. State Patrol: Cyclist Hit, Killed While Pulling Children In Rock County The video showed a 2 lane road with no paved shoulder and excellent sight lines at the wreck scene, but stated the driver was “distracted by a cell phone” when he hit the mother from behind. At speed that would mean that even if the victim had a rear view mirror and was looking through it she might have had about a second to identify the fact that the weapon vehicle was on an intercept course with her and her children. That is barely time to begin changing course to avoid a wreck like this. Get the infrastructure “up to Dutch” to prevent.
Another WY fatality. Authorities identify bicyclist killed Monday on Highway 220 OK I have to blame this one on the cyclist assuming the narrative is accurate, otherwise it reads like just another SWSS. Hit-from-behind protocols to avoid and INFRASTRUCTURE!
Another dead cyclist in Ted Rogers’ back yard. 79-year old bike rider killed in Chino; SoCal cycling fatalities up slightly over last year At the time of posting there is no information on the cyclist’s direction of travel or lane position. So that leaves getting the infrastructure “up to Dutch” as the only preventative measure.
Over on “the Continent” a UK cyclist is hit head on by a UK driver while riding Alp d’Huez. British cyclist dies in Alps crash after colliding head-on with motorist as he descended notorious mountain road AFAICT the driver drifted to the cyclist’s side of the road to reduce the amount of steering input needed to make the hairpin corner, leaving the cyclist absolutely no time to react before getting hit. Since this is a piece of iconic bicycle infrastructure that must be shared with motor vehicles, about the only thing I can suggest is “Y’all be careful out there.”
Our Daily Ted has some overlap on the wreck links, and has some good writing. Morning Links: Welcome new LADOT GM, and German police ticket one-armed man for having just one brake
Infrastructure! news from Canuckistan and the rest of the Great White North. Cyclist thinks Trans Canada Trail won’t be finished by 2017 Yep, when you leave national infrastructure (Trans Canada pretty much defines it as “national”) up to local funding to create you can almost guarantee the situation will end up late and over budget. And most likely below standards to boot.
And the situation is none the better in the UK, despite stringent laws. Cyclist urges Surrey County Council to repair road defect “before someone gets killed” The defect is almost invisible until you hit it, shortly before you hit the deck.
And still in Jolly Olde a woman’s smile gets repaired after a near-fatal wreck. Cyclist injured in near-fatal crash finally smiles again thanks to dentist who replaced six front teeth for free after NHS refused to fund op
And I seem to have run clean out of links to post. Perhaps I will conclude this post and enjoy the Sam Adams Summer Ale Mrs. the Poet has brought for my consumption.
